I was performing at a music festival in Spalding yesterday ( on stilts) and I was talking to a family and I asked the name of the daughter -a really pretty little girl of about three. The father told me it was Highbury . I asked if he was an Arsenal Fan ( Highbury is Arsenal's ground ) F**king right ! he said proudly . I was utterly speechless , completely lost for words. That poor child !

I knew a young woman named Quo Vadis. She didn't seem bothered by it. Mother had a friend named Ave Maria Schmidt, a lovely lady who called herself Ahvah. She knew a lady at Chatham College whose parents had named her Aida Amneris too.
I knew an old suffragist named Austin Lily. Austin was her first name, Lilly, as in Eli, was her surname. Surnames as Christian names aren't that odd in the American south. I'll admit Highbury, especially for a football team, is more than a bit strange. I thought there were laws in Europe against giving kids odd names.
Of course I wonde how many little Francos, Joe Greens, and L.C. Greenwoods were christened in Pittsburgh in the 80s.
Oh, and I know a lovely lady whose parents named her Francis. English wasn't her mother's first language. Franny has no problems with gender identity.

There are oddities of naming that reflect the parents' history. I know an immigrant Filipino family whose children are named 'Girlee' and 'Peteyboy'. Legally.

As we were strolling around,there was an American couple with their young daughter. She was wandering off and the worried parents shouted out to her.

A few years ago, a couple who were hard-charging Arkansas Razorback fans named their firstborn son "Ray Zorback." It made the national news. That's the kind of thing that happens in families where a lot of first cousins marry.

Sometimes it's just a case of not thinking it through. My wife, Barbara, knew a family who were on the verge of naming their newborn daughter "Claire Annette" when Barbara, who used to play the alto clarinet asked them if they really wanted to do that.

This matter was addressed in a comic strip years ago. In "Gasoline Alley," Skeezix and Nina Wallet were going to name their firstborn son "Michael Thomas" when somebody pointed out one of the possible ramifications of the name. "Think of the initials," said the character. "M. T. Wallet. Not good." (Incidentally, before Nina married Skeezix Wallet, her last name was "Clock.")

And then, sometimes it's just happenstance. In the late Fifties I took a couple of years' lessons from a superb classic guitarist who really should have had a concert career, but he suffered from stage-fright so badly when he played in public that he gave it up and turned to teaching (the concert world's loss was his students' gain). His name was Edward (Bud) Hern. I met his wife a couple of times. I don't know what her maiden name was, but her first name was Fern. Fern Hern.

This, without going into such gems as "Ima Hogg" and (my favorite) "Clarence Clapsaddle."

It's not a new thing.... I spent several years poring over old church records and came up with some doozies from around 1780 - 1880.....

Bear in mind that these are all genuine, baptism names from an English county that had very few, if any, immigrants. Most of the surnames are fairly common to the area and many of the Christian names are definately Old Testament!
