Come off it Richard, a number of people die in police custody in the UK annually...for a variety of reasons.

When you compare populations with the US you would expect a larger number of deaths IPC.

Mr. Smith, who is black, recalled that even he had been pulled over this spring and detained for 45 minutes by a police officer from Hempstead who ran his license plate through a computer database, even though he was wearing his uniform at the time.

"How humiliating is that for an elected official?" he said. "They have no respect, even when we do get elected. So I know how Sandy Bland felt."

In a way it's not too important, but having looked at that clip of her driving, I'm very puzzled what it is Sandra Bland was supposed to have done that caused a police officer to stop her car.

ake, it's not he nunbers that are the problem-- thse are bad enough-- but the skin color of te majority of questionable deaths.

Joe, re: I'd describe him as a mediocre officer, not a bad one.

Would you describe someone who falsifies police reports in his own self-interest as mediocre... or bad? The report doesn't match what his recorded remarks were on scene.

Another offense is Walking While Black, especially in white neighborhoods

I'll be vacaying in Lower No WiFi Land and not able to post much in the way of educated antiracism. Try to be kind to one another willya guys? Fighting between people who fundamentally are for fairness doesn't help anyone end racism even in baby steps. Remember it's an oppression uniquely designed to keep allies from joining forces, so try to not fall for that. People are dying while we dick around here, pretty much globally. It's in all countries, classes, and syntaxes.

If you believe that all racism in all countries is designed then I suggest that you need to know your 'enemy' better, and by doing that may find common ground with more friends.

Are there more Black people taken into custody than White people? If so that could be the reason for the greater number of deaths amongst Blacks.....Was this particular death suicide and was this lady a political activist?

Hi, Ake-

There are proportionally more blacks taken into custody than white people - far more. So there's no doubt that there is racism in the criminal justice process in the U.S. Still, there has been a "jump on the bandwagon" effect that has taken place since the violence in Ferguson, Missouri. Some (far too many) of the charges of police racism are legitimate, but there are a good number of "jump on the bandwagon" charges that undermine the credibility of the legitimate complaints. I think the Bland case is on the less-than-credible side, and the screaming about it really hurts the legitimate complaints.
