My father was a horse trainer and he bought, sold and traded horses all the time. When we came home from school we never knew whether a favorite horse would still be on the premises.

One trotter (NOT pig knuckles) that came off the track and that we had for years was named 'Trueboy'. One of those human-oriented animals that prove and disprove a lot of misconceptions. I'd love to see a thread with first-person stories of horses and dogs.

Francis the Talking Mule

Francis the Talking Mule

(A mule's only one-half horse, so I had to list him twice.)

The Big Horse that they sing about. You know the song it goes.....
Big Horse, Big Horse you're mine. I think Mario Lanza used to sing it.

Yeah! I remember that horse. The Beatles did a song about him too. Something about "Big Horse, Big Horse, I love you."

Ebbie:

When I was a kid, my folks owned a boarding farm for harness racing horses that ran on the Chicago tracks. For a time, the sire of the "Hanover" line was resident and standing stud on our place. I don't believe that he ever won the Hambletonian, but I know his name was on several later winners.

Dusty (a stable name, I think) was a huge animal, but as gentle to us lower forms of life as any puppy.

Buttermilk (Dale Evans horse)

Topper (Hopalong Cassidy's horse)

But what was the name of the horse that pulled the "Wonderful One-Horse Shay"?

Beadie, the beauty of a trotter in full stride can still make me cry.

I am dismayed every time I see a movie showing horses pulling stage coaches or buckboards at a gallop, rather than at a trot. No horse trainer or owner worth his salt would allow his 'hitched' horse to break into a gallop, except in emergency.
