Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Dec 23 - 11:24 AM The BBC News (radio) this morning was talking about the possible big names from the US who might be in attendance. Sounds like there could be quite a wake to follow! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: GUEST Date: 08 Dec 23 - 11:42 AM Ah sure, big names, if you're into that. Nick Cave sang 'Rainynight in Soho', Depp was there, Gerry Adams and AIden Gillen did readings, as did Boni, albeit a recorded one. Imelda May and Mundy did the Fairytale. Lot of other stuff as well. Michael D was there (the president, for those unfamiliar). Friends turned out for the funeral, in other words. Thousands were out in Dublin along the touted of the procession, perhaps more telling. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: GUEST Date: 08 Dec 23 - 12:10 PM A bit more, Geldof, Depp, Liam O Maonlaoi and others read the Prayers of the faithful, Cait O Riordan sang 'A man you don't meet every day, Sean O Sé and Cór Chuil Aodha sang 'Ag Chriost an Siol'. No good funeral without the lads from Cuil Aodha, I imagine they finish up with 'Mo ghile mear', it's not over until they sing that |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: Thompson Date: 08 Dec 23 - 01:30 PM Not to mention the wave of song passing along the crowds as his funeral passed through Dublin, two horses drawing the glass hearse. Take a look at Reddit Ireland today. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: Steve Shaw Date: 08 Dec 23 - 02:47 PM I could have sworn I saw four horses! I stand to be corrected. We had an afternoon's shopping in Truro today (a 75-minute drive), so this morning I rustled up a hasty Spotify playlist of Pogues songs which we played in the car both ways. Jollity, reflection and tears all in good measure, but mostly jollity. Brown eyes, NYPD choir, sick bed, summer in Siam, rainy night, Sally's boozer, Almería once again (a place we love!). Sad to say, I must be on my way, said the heart-shaped sign. Shane, I love you, baby! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: keberoxu Date: 09 Dec 23 - 08:47 AM Just thought of this, but it must have been pointed out during media coverage. December 8, the date of MacGowan's funeral, is the same date as Sinead O'Connor's birthday. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues leader Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 09 Dec 23 - 10:20 AM We watched the ceremony on Sky News (simulcast with BBC News 24 iirc). One thing that annoyed both of us was the outbreaks of applause, which more properly belongs in a performance venue than in a church .... but methinks the wake wouldn't have been televised, and not everybody could have attended it, so perhaps it leaked backwards in time into the ceremony. Mind you, one thing Herself very definitely approved of was them using the unexpurgated full-fat version of Fairytale. The lad got a proper send-off. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues member Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 23 - 12:34 PM Sineád O Connor's birthday AND the Immaculate conception. All rolled into the one day. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues member Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 23 - 12:36 PM Both the priests and the musicians put on a performance, don't they. Applause at a funeral is not all that unusual in my experience, or the dancing, for that matter. It's about the person and the life being celebrated. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Pogues member Shane MacGowan (1957-2023) From: Thompson Date: 10 Dec 23 - 04:22 AM Yeah, I always feel applause at a funeral is ewww, but it has happened at virtually every funeral I've been at in recent years; the soft patter of palms is kind of a supportive gesture to the grieving. So sad to see his poor wife, clearly in the kind of stark shock that leaves you in utter denial, and his white-haired old father, stunned with grief. |
