Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: Hovering Bob Date: 02 Oct 03 - 01:14 PM Good luck to the new club, let's hope it is successful as the old one that I remember from the days I lived in Bedford and was very active in the folk scene in the area (late 70's). I have very fond memories of the Ampthill club, if only as it was the first club that booked 'Kinsfolk' the trio I was then in with Roy and Louise Martin. Does anyone remember the large concert club that I helped Roy and Louise run in Kempston? Anyway, good luck to the club and all involved, I knew it wouldn't take Cllr too long to get involved in a new venture! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: breezy Date: 03 Oct 03 - 05:31 AM chicken and egg, who do you get first the artist or the audience? If you have no artiste you get no audience. Hamish and Lorna, you havent heard of them?? You havent been to Chesham then, nor Baldock, how about Malcolm Hobbs then? Kitty Vernon and Les Sullivan ? they played to an intimate gathering at Uxbridge last Tuesday and gave a us a magical evening and les' songs have woven their way into many a singers repertoire without them realising it.Two of his songs were heard last night at the 'Shed' in Croxley green Steve Tilston Tonight at the Comfort Hotel St Albans fri 3rd Oct Good luck. |

Its just I'm owed some leave and wouldn't mind popping up for a day or two. Also that set at Banbury was a belter, I think it was the best we've done yet. All the best, Wassail! Chris |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: breezy Date: 13 Dec 03 - 03:16 PM quote, by Martin C after meeting and hearing George last night. 'Something special' We wish Ampthill a special night with the 'new kid on the block' |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: GUEST Date: 14 Dec 03 - 07:03 PM Is this the same club as the one advertised in the local folk press as "Ampthill Acoustic Club"? I know the "F" word puts people off but I never bothered sampling it as I like "F*lk" music and can't stand the sort of soft core pop that is marketed as "acoustic". |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: George Papavgeris Date: 14 Dec 03 - 07:14 PM I don't do "soft core pop", whatever that is, GUEST...No, I definitely don't... |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: GUEST,efn Magazine Date: 15 Dec 03 - 06:53 AM From the steady stream of "acoustic" CDs that I get for review I know exactly what is meant. The sort of act who thinks that "folk" just means plugging an acoustic guitar into the PA. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: Hamish Date: 15 Dec 03 - 07:19 AM Guest: if you know Maidenhead, Herga and Windward folk clubs - where George is resident - you would know that he wouldn't survive too long if it was soft core pop. And when you know that Vin Garbutt and other folk (with a capital"F") luminaries cover his songs, you're left in absolutley no doubt. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: George Papavgeris Date: 15 Dec 03 - 11:03 AM GUEST, I wouldn't plug in for less than 250 audience - and even then I prefer a mike for the guitar to actually plugging in. I, too have occasionally heard some material - generally from Londoners trying to break into the Home Counties folk circuit - that might fit your description of "soft core pop", but not that much. And as Hamish said, Herga, Maidenhead and Windward would have none of that anyway. Tell you what: Ignore labels like "acoustic" for an evening, and come to Ampthill tomorrow night. If at the end you feel your journey was wasted, I will personally refund you your petrol, beer and entrance money; say about £20. And if you decide that it wasn't wasted, you buy all three of my CDs (at Mudcatter prices, £20 for the three), and review them in your magazine. Up for the challenge? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: My guru always said Date: 15 Dec 03 - 03:38 PM It's a good challenge - take it GUEST.... You'll end up with 3 Fab CD's of George's & you'll love them! See you tomorrow then. Hil |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: George Papavgeris Date: 16 Dec 03 - 06:31 AM Planning at least 3 unusual additions to the repertoire for tonight, partly to avoid me being bored hearing me do the same stuff, and partly because Mike Blair will be there - and I know which songs he likes. Planning and Practicing are two different things, of course... |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 16 Dec 03 - 07:42 AM Glad to see something interesting going on in Ampthill. last time I was there in the 70's the most exciting thing that happened was the traffic lights changing |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: GUEST Date: 16 Dec 03 - 10:25 AM Dont talk to me about traffic lights I got more hassle about traffic lights last month than any other issue, any way back in the seventies I thought there was a folk club in The white hart hotel in ampthill so Hovering Bob was telling me. Reason for Ampthill Acoustic = AA might be easier to publicise it we do have blues as well as folk and possible some Jam sorry jazz Cllr (at work) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: GUEST,Ross Date: 20 Dec 03 - 06:32 AM Will the traffic lights be changing this tuesday (23rd) or is there a singers/players night at the Queens Head I think I'm free |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: breezy Date: 20 Dec 03 - 01:28 PM Hil complimented george superbly, her rendition of Geo's 'Pitter Patter' is sensitively stunning and Linda the landlady's a rare old sort too. the greek dance session was a bonus so I hear they left at 4.oo a.m.!!! George was still in recovery last night at the king H Good luck cllr for the future. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: My guru always said Date: 20 Dec 03 - 06:12 PM Thanks for your complimentary compliments Breezy - do you mean complement? The Greek dancing was indeed a bonus, but we were gone from the pub long before 4am - well, some time before anyway! I now have a stinking cold - strange phrase that.... Definitely going along on Jan 13th to see Cloudstreet - they're Fab! And what a great club.... |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: treewind Date: 21 Dec 03 - 02:29 PM Is there a website or somewhere to find out what's coming up? Having passed through Ampthill today, I find it's not to hard to reach from home so expect a visit from Mary and me some time. Anahata |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire From: GUEST,Ross Date: 22 Dec 03 - 04:28 AM Oh bugger It's gonna be months before I get another chance Which set of traffic lights are better Don't forget Barton's Bull has a session on the 29th |
