Hi gang. Sorry for the silly question, and please don't ask me why I need this, but I need the name of a town or city in England that starts with F, and I can't think of one. Can anyone help me?

Thanks, Marion

It's spelled Falmouth, being the mouth of the river Fal. However there is Foulness..... or foul mess as it's known.

Many of these 'towns' are actually still villages. The difference is usually in the number of pubs. Towns had markets and thus, many more pubs.

I used to live in Fordington. It was a ford on the river Frome that was downstream from the bridge at Dorchester.

And that's todays' useless information.

Gurney ~ I'm not hi jacking this thread but there are an awful lot of people in Cornwall who would disagree with you. Cornwall part of England? It's a Duchy in its own right. Part of Great Britain or The British Isles but England!!!!! Never.

To drift the thread a bit, Sussex may have Fulking, but in Austria there is Fucking.

..............
Noon ehas mentioned Frinton, which until recently had the distinction of being the only known town without a single pub. It has one now, and also a pretty good folk musicians' shop, Thrift Music.

FWIW the law allowing Cornwall to hold elections for it's own parliament (called the Stannory) has never been repealed to my knowledge. The only thing that prevents it is the cost - and there are companies down there almost big enough to fund it.

Fazeley - home of Sir Robert Peel - he of the eponymous "Bobby" (as in policeman). Well Drayton Bassett actually - but who's argueing?

Pedant alert. Peace, it's spelt Fingringhoe, a fine Essex port that still boasts a working ballast wharf where one used to work on a sand barge.

Whilst we're on my favourite subject of Essex, there's Frating, Fordham, Finchingfield, Franham, Furneux Pelham, Feering, Fairstead, Fuller Street, Faulkbourne, Felsted, Ford End, Fyfield, Fambridge and if you ignore the precursor, Woodham Ferrers.

Sadly, Betty's Foulness doesn't count, as it is an island rather than a village. And saving the best for last, there's Fobbing.

Dorking is a town without a town hall.

I don't think it's to do with size either, Cranleigh (Britain's biggest village) is a lot bigger than Llanwrtyd Wells (Britain's smallest town).

How is your sister's dog now weelittledrummer?

I thought for a minute the thread was going to get really interesting.

Woodham Ferrers is know locally as South Wooden Ferrets..... it used to have a wicked haberdashery shop which I would travel out to (about 50 miles) but then I discoverd Hobbycraft.

I once spent a lovely afternoon trudging around the remarkable Great Coxwell Tithe Barn and gaping at the Burne-Jones Briar Rose paintings installation at historic house Buscot Park (NT), both situated near Faringdon, Oxfordshire. Will that do?
