Your DEET needs to be at least 70% (military surplus carry it this strong also Canada) - smear liberaly twice a day - exposed skin and all clothing.

It is not the cigar smoke that keeps them away - it is the nicotine in the blood - smoke several a day - and/or chew RedMan.

"Old Woodsman" is for the tourists - barbeque sause for fresh meat.

Vitamine B, Garlic, non-sugar diet, are all useless.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Spray window screens with comercial prep for no-see-ums. Enjoy some of the best fishing in the world and have fun.

DEET is bad for you. Find an insecticide that is not such a neurotoxin.

Bobert, does this look like your friend?

We have wolf spiders, plus the much larger tarantula.

CBC Article about DEET concerns.

Organic is better. Read this and this information.

Here's the logic behind the not using DEET or broadcast spraying pesticides against mosquitoes.

The same idiots who want to spray the whole world and kill the beneficial bugs along with the mosquitoes are the ones who are pushing DEET.

DEET. You have to look hard to get past all of the commercial pushers of DEET at the top of the page of search results.

In the table at the above link: can be harmful to humans:

    Measured toxicity

The Working Group has decided that there are sufficient toxicity data on the substance and/or its degradation products (e.g. hydrolysis) in order to classify or not classify.

The subst. has been considered in order to see if it is readily degradable or not according to existing criteria. Sufficient data may not always have been precented and the substance is in those cases by default considered as not readily degradable.

The substance has been considered in order to see if it is bioaccumulative or not according to existing criteria. The substance is considered as potentially bioaccumulative if log POW >= 3.0 (unless the experimentally determined BCF <= 100).

Can be harmful in the environment:
    A Q U A T I C C L A S S I F.

    Harmful to aquatic organisms (R52)
    and
May cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment (R53)

The little buggers were ravenous at Old Songs. They don't usually bother me, but this time they did. They nearly carried Jacqui off, and they must have been very poor and very hungry. When I saw them lining up with food stamps, I retired to the camper.

Okay, jpk, you start with the most toxic bug killer you can find, and hope it doesn't cause any neurological problems. I'll start with the milder one and hope it works against mosquitoes. If it doesn't, I can choose to switch over to some DEET mixture. But if my organic one works, I'm a lot better off.

Ms. Sage - I doubt that you have ever been where the blacks and skeeters are so thick you inhale them and anything that flies injects poison.

Wall Street Journal - Opinion - Letters to the Editor - p.A15, Monday, June 27, 2005

Black Flies, Buzzin' 'Round My Head

The annual attack of biting flies started this year in my part of Indiana right on schedule on June 2. Hoosiers call them deer flies, and they look like little brown stealth bombers, but otherwise they have all the characteristics of the black flies of your article ("You Don't Bother Me, Black Fly, Say Fans of "Jaws on Wings'," page one, June 9).

I've done considerable research on how to control these flies but have come up empty-handed except for one innovative approach developed by a clever guy in Michigan. He determined that these flies sense moving objects and usually attack the high, backside of the victim. Based on this inteligence, he came up with a patch that is sticky on both sides and is placed on the back of a cap. Flies attack the cap and stick to the parch. On my 220 yard morning walk to get the Journal at my mailbox, the patch collects 20 to 40 flies that otherwise would be after me and my dogs. It doesn't solve the problem but every bit helps.

Thomas B. Tucker
Terre Haute, Ind.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I dunno, Mr. Gargoyle--I grew up in the soggy Pacific Northwest and spent my share of time in the mountains and by lakes and rivers swatting mosquitoes, little black flies, and when I was real unlucky, horseflies. They fly off with chunks of flesh.

Down here in Texas it's biting flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggars. Not to mention the passive stuff like poison ivy (of which I have a generous smear on my right ankle, two weeks into the itchy ordeal).

The Weather Network Bug Report for Moncton, New Brunswick (amazing! and comical if you live here)

Mosquitoes   Medium Medium Not likely Medium High Medium

Deer Flies   High Medium Not likely Medium Medium Not In Season

Stables Flies    Not Native

Horse Flies High   Medium Not likely Medium Medium Not In Season

No-see-ums    Not In Season

The "Not In Season"s are hilarious! The lack of skeeters on Sunday nearly made me spill my tea... I guess they don't do well in windy weather (Hurricane Bill approacheth).
