Subject: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 14 Jun 09 - 11:18 AM Poem 195 of 230: MUSING ON WIMBLEDON - SUMMER 2002 2001 got somewhat cheeky, So, on my T.V., I was pleased to see Old-fashioned etiquette about the net... But oh! to get among the coaching set. Thus, here is a feature that I'd teach: Two-hands each side – either off when can't reach. And, as for thoughts on pay, I do not say "Amateur play" but "spread-out the outlay." From http://walkaboutsverse.sitegoz.com (e-scroll) Or http://blogs.myspace.com/walkaboutsverse (e-book) And, having just won his first grass-court tournament, will Andy Murray be the first Scot to win Wimbledon..? |

Harold Mahoney was born in Edinbugh, but he's listed as being Irish. However, one can argue that 'Scots' were originally from Ireland anyway! Cheers Nigel |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 15 Jun 09 - 04:37 AM Apparently, grunters and squeelers (sounds like a heavy-metal band!) are to be dealt with at Wimbledon this year...I'm sure we'll hear more on that...but I myself, Peter, have questioned females playing tennis on other grounds - i.e., the strain upon the racket arm; this from a visit to a tournament kicking off just now... Poem 156 of 230: EASTBOURNE - SUMMER 2001 On the day before the solstice, I first sighted Eastbourne: A beautiful elegant place - English culture untorn. Two long days allowed two long lanes To be walked before dark - One after travel on four trains, One post-Devonshire Park. The first was between sea and heath, And gardens signed by post, Then up the Downs to view, beneath, The brutal handsome coast. The next, contrasting that before, Showed all kinds of vessels - Parked up along the pebbly shore And in marina cells. (But, as for the women's tennis, It soon became a qualm - As I was put-off by what is A great strain on their arm.) Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: The Sandman Date: 15 Jun 09 - 10:28 AM and a great strain on their voice. on a hot day in summer I first sighted Wimbledon, a noisy place. multi national tennis. but for the womens tennis. too many frilly knickers. too many high kickers. too many city slickers. but as for the womans tennis played sedately on grass. it was Monica Seles Whose grunts were a pain in the arse. B. Allboy. 2009 |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Ebbie Date: 15 Jun 09 - 12:11 PM Ha. I've heard LOTS of grunts coming from the males at Wimbledon. One just last week. It's kind of distracting but I figger that they're the ones putting out the effort, not I, so I can live with it. By the way, judging by when they do speak, the players don't appear to be miked so why are the grunts so audible? Just how loud are they?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 15 Jun 09 - 01:42 PM I think it stems, Ebbie, from coaches telling youngsters to exhale as they strike the ball - but, in my opinion, this may be okay for golf e.g., but not rallying tennis where players should catch their breath whenever they can; the exception, of course, is serving, where folks have time to perform what is an awkward motion that would make Marcel Marceau grunt, at least a bit! I guess a spare sock could be put to use..? ;-)> |

From http://walkaboutsverse.sitegoz.com (e-scroll) Or http://blogs.myspace.com/walkaboutsverse (e-book) Back to tennis, Murray certainly has a good chance, but I think Federa will win his 15th major... |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 19 Jun 09 - 02:24 PM Just heard that, sadly, an injured Nadal will not be defending his Wimbledon title. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Arnie Date: 20 Jun 09 - 02:06 PM Murray Mound doesn't have the same ring to it as Henman Hill, but I suspect that, barring injury, Andy Murray may well get to the finals which Tim never did. Latest weather forecast doesn't look too bad for the week, but this being Wimbledon week things could go downhill pretty quickly. Still, with a new roof over the centre court there will be no excuse for Sir Cliff to burst into song this year so the money is well spent! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 20 Jun 09 - 04:50 PM If you'll pardon the pun, Arnie, I watched, on TV, the "dry-run" of the newly-roofed centre-court and, apart from the odd slip and a slight limit on the height of lobs, it seems fit for purpose...Sod's Law, though, it will probably be one of the driest Wimbledons for ages..? |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: GUEST,Greycap Date: 22 Jun 09 - 01:57 AM Please, please, let it be all over soon. My dear Mrs. is an avid tennis fan and I sorta miss her over this period. I can't watch any TV either!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 22 Jun 09 - 09:36 AM And, if I may vent my spleen, Greycap, why on earth on the BBC trailer for Wimbledon/The All ENGLAND Lawn Tennis Championships did we have to have not only American-rock backing music but a John McEnroe voice over...at the US Open do they have Henry Purcell and Tim Henman?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 22 Jun 09 - 01:21 PM >>Murray Mound doesn't have the same ring to it as Henman Hill<< Why do we English want a Murray Mound. He has stated he is Scottish, so let him get on with it. I want to see a true English player win, whenever or never. :-) Sorry, I just see Murray as another player that is not English. British maybe, but Scots don't like us for that me thinks. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 22 Jun 09 - 01:49 PM As an Englishman, The Villan, I've really enjoyed my VISITS to the fine NATION of Scotland, and was hoping Andy might help with the push for full independence; but, apparently, he's just bought a home in Surrey, so perhaps, sadly, he's starting to see himself as British..? Anyway, he's certainly a fine player to watch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 22 Jun 09 - 01:55 PM ..Anyway, he's certainly a fine player to watch<< Couldn't agree with you more there WV I lived in Scotland for 3 and a half years and I loved every minute. I made a lot of very nice Scottish friends. The Scots are very proud of their tradition and I support them on that. Pity us English aren't the same. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 23 Jun 09 - 09:57 AM ...and Jason Goodall, of England, I think, seems, to me, to be potentially a top player - especially on grass...concentration, maybe..? |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 23 Jun 09 - 09:58 AM It's "Josh," sorry - I wasn't concentrating! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 24 Jun 09 - 04:35 AM ...but, alas, he lost, and there are no English players left in the singles. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 24 Jun 09 - 06:43 AM That is so sad. I thought that the English were getting grants and lots of coaching etc to help them become world beaters. Where is it going wrong. I find it embarrasing that we have Wimbledon, but can't produce top level players from England. I do not include Murray in that as he is Scottish. |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Acorn4 Date: 25 Jun 09 - 11:35 AM Re the grunting and squealing, it's a bit distracting when you're trying to mark exam papers in the room next to the TV. Wouldn't like to be in the hotel room next door when they're on their honeymoon! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 25 Jun 09 - 12:09 PM Yes, Acorn4, and according to Tiger Tim, and myself before I was put off women's tennis at Eastbourne, they somehow manage not to grunt during practice sessions..?! Back to the mens, I predict either Hewitt of Murray (due to meet in the Semis, I think) will play Federa in the final..? |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 25 Jun 09 - 12:35 PM Bit worried, as the Queen is hob nobbing with him. Do you think she is after a toy boy :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 25 Jun 09 - 12:58 PM ...and here was I thinking he a Scottish republican...maybe he's done a William Wordsworth and wants to smell the roses..?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 25 Jun 09 - 01:33 PM Maybe he is after the corgi's :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Mrs.Duck Date: 25 Jun 09 - 02:58 PM No Villan - he's only Scottish when he loses. If he wins he's definitely British! Now call me a prude if you must but is it absolutely necessary for some of the women players to expose 6" below waistline?? I thought skirts were supposed to go round your waist not your crotch! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 25 Jun 09 - 03:09 PM ...and I thought we'd moved on to dog-roses and daffodils, here, Mrs. Duck..?! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 25 Jun 09 - 03:17 PM Quack :-) I don't use the British approach. Andy Murray is Scottish, win or lose. I don't need to jump on the British bandwagon. I want to see a Tim Henman only twice as good. :-) Well by the sounds of some of these women, they are having orgasm's on court. I switch to another match when I hear that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Acorn4 Date: 25 Jun 09 - 03:24 PM Just heard that Murray has won - and incredibly without any "Tim Henman moments"! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 25 Jun 09 - 03:55 PM Yes, Acorn4, in my opinion, he's a notch above Tim - who, along with John Lloyd, was one of the better players never to win a major; I'll be very surprised if Andy doesn't. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 25 Jun 09 - 04:30 PM like chalk and cheese. Andy Murray is winner with aggression. Tim was always a very good nice player, but lacked that something extra |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Acorn4 Date: 25 Jun 09 - 05:04 PM I've always thought that there is a slight hint of Aspbergers about Andy Murray. I am not saying this at all in a disparaging way at all but I have an autistic son, and some of AM's mannerisms are a bit reminiscent. It may actually help as the powers of concentration are very focused and it may also act as a kind of insulation to prevent him being got at my the media stuff. Let's hope so! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Dave Hanson Date: 26 Jun 09 - 06:52 AM I started watching the womens doubles yesterday, I lasted about 3 minutes of listening to that bloody awful Tracy Austin, has she got the most irritating voice in the world or what ? Dave H |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Arnie Date: 26 Jun 09 - 07:50 AM Dave H - agreed!! What with Venus Williams grunting like she's in labour and Tracy Austin's irritating voice, I'm giving women's tennis a miss. Strangely enough, I think that John McEnroe has turned out to be a very listenable-to commentator and it's difficult to recall that he was the original 'superbrat' of the court. Age has definitely brought wisdom in his case. |
