Poem 195 of 230: MUSING ON WIMBLEDON - SUMMER 2002

2001 got somewhat cheeky,
    So, on my T.V., I was pleased to see
Old-fashioned etiquette about the net...
    But oh! to get among the coaching set.
Thus, here is a feature that I'd teach:
    Two-hands each side – either off when can't reach.
And, as for thoughts on pay, I do not say
    "Amateur play" but "spread-out the outlay."

Harold Mahoney was born in Edinbugh, but he's listed as being Irish.
However, one can argue that 'Scots' were originally from Ireland anyway!

Apparently, grunters and squeelers (sounds like a heavy-metal band!) are to be dealt with at Wimbledon this year...I'm sure we'll hear more on that...but I myself, Peter, have questioned females playing tennis on other grounds - i.e., the strain upon the racket arm; this from a visit to a tournament kicking off just now...

Ha. I've heard LOTS of grunts coming from the males at Wimbledon. One just last week. It's kind of distracting but I figger that they're the ones putting out the effort, not I, so I can live with it.

By the way, judging by when they do speak, the players don't appear to be miked so why are the grunts so audible? Just how loud are they??

I think it stems, Ebbie, from coaches telling youngsters to exhale as they strike the ball - but, in my opinion, this may be okay for golf e.g., but not rallying tennis where players should catch their breath whenever they can; the exception, of course, is serving, where folks have time to perform what is an awkward motion that would make Marcel Marceau grunt, at least a bit! I guess a spare sock could be put to use..? ;-)>

Murray Mound doesn't have the same ring to it as Henman Hill, but I suspect that, barring injury, Andy Murray may well get to the finals which Tim never did. Latest weather forecast doesn't look too bad for the week, but this being Wimbledon week things could go downhill pretty quickly. Still, with a new roof over the centre court there will be no excuse for Sir Cliff to burst into song this year so the money is well spent!

If you'll pardon the pun, Arnie, I watched, on TV, the "dry-run" of the newly-roofed centre-court and, apart from the odd slip and a slight limit on the height of lobs, it seems fit for purpose...Sod's Law, though, it will probably be one of the driest Wimbledons for ages..?

Why do we English want a Murray Mound. He has stated he is Scottish, so let him get on with it.

As an Englishman, The Villan, I've really enjoyed my VISITS to the fine NATION of Scotland, and was hoping Andy might help with the push for full independence; but, apparently, he's just bought a home in Surrey, so perhaps, sadly, he's starting to see himself as British..? I lived in Scotland for 3 and a half years and I loved every minute. I made a lot of very nice Scottish friends.

The Scots are very proud of their tradition and I support them on that.

Pity us English aren't the same.

I thought that the English were getting grants and lots of coaching etc to help them become world beaters.
Where is it going wrong.
I find it embarrasing that we have Wimbledon, but can't produce top level players from England.

I've always thought that there is a slight hint of Aspbergers about Andy Murray. I am not saying this at all in a disparaging way at all but I have an autistic son, and some of AM's mannerisms are a bit reminiscent.

It may actually help as the powers of concentration are very focused and it may also act as a kind of insulation to prevent him being got at my the media stuff.

Dave H - agreed!! What with Venus Williams grunting like she's in labour and Tracy Austin's irritating voice, I'm giving women's tennis a miss. Strangely enough, I think that John McEnroe has turned out to be a very listenable-to commentator and it's difficult to recall that he was the original 'superbrat' of the court. Age has definitely brought wisdom in his case.
