Well, the NHL thread is back, so....

Miami at Pittsburg Thursday at 20:30h Eastern. I say the Steelers have a slight edge.

I see the Patriots may do okay at kicker. I thought they were looney to let Adam go, but this new kid, Steve Gostowski has VERY impressive stats. On the other hand, Juniour Seau? More like Senior! Anyway, don't want to drone on about the next Superbowl winners toooo much.

Who ya got this year?

I dunno, Gnu, I think Junior's got a couple more good years left in him. I'm really going to miss Willie McGinest, though. And I wish Deion would get his head out of his butt and just play football.

As for the game on Thursday, I agree with you on the Steelers, provided Roethlisburger is 100%.

Well, the NFL is nice but it can't hold a candle to college football and the University Of Notre Dame - GO IRISH! Cheers, cheers, for old Notre Dame.

The game was invented before the forward pass. In the early days, when the ball was shaped differently, there was a LOT more kicking, including the "drop kick", similar to the kick in Aussie football.

When the forward pass was invented, no one thought it worth while to change the name....(BTW...the first forward pass was thrown in an experimental game between Washburn and Wichita Univ. in 1905)

Checked out everything on the web and decided on a ticket that would pay out $242... bought it this AM... the odds had changed... $180!! I was a tad pissed off. I guess that means you're not a Texas A & M alumnus, Q :-).

49ers fan here. Pre-season polls showed them at or near the bottom, but the way they've played in their 1-1 start shows that they've improved over last year's miserable season. QB Alex Smith is showing real promise, WR Arnaz Battle is back to health, Frank Gore is running well, and new acquisition WR Antonio Bryant had a great game against the Rams, and so far looks to be their "go to" guy. Their defense, which is supposed to be their weakness, is playing pretty good.

I must say that, as a Brit, I can't see how anyone can bear to watch American Football!
The game is OK when it's moving (although, personally I'd rather watch Rugby*) but why do they keep stopping the bloody game to change teams! It ruins the rhythm.
Why can't they just choose one starting team, a fixed number of substitutes, for use as required, and let the damned game flow! (I'm sure they didn't originally design the game to be played by forty odd players in batches).

Walrus... "The game is okay when it's moving...". Well, it does move, for sixty minutes. Between "plays", the action stops for a set period of time. During play and between plays, a tremendous amount of analysis and srategy is involved. This ADDS to the game for the fans.

I enjoy rugby too. Although, I find the game sometimes stops far too often. A player is tackled and play is held up for five to ten seconds (depending on code), only to have another player run three yards, or less, and be tackled, stopping play again and again and again. When this happens, for a lot of the 80 minutes, there is a lot of "standing around" for half of each team. As well, I have been a rugby fan for over thirty years and I still have trouble understanding some of the rules, which, apparently, can be "interpreted" by the referee.

In American football, every player is at "top speed" for a full sixty minutes. It is this explosiveness that requires the use of protective gear. It is as much of a game of chess as it is a game of physical prowess. The rules are well defined and calls by the referees can be challenged, with penalty if the call was correct.

I suppose it's like any other game. If you watch it long enough, you begin to understand the skills required. I like both sports.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to knock the game itself - I could cope with the stop start nature of the game, its an 'explosive' as opposed to a 'flowing' game, fair enough.

What seems to break everything up (as far as I am concerned) is the consistant changes in teams as the fortunes of the games change.

Does this occur only in the professional game or does it occur at the amateur level too?

I think if you were to join a knowledgible fan for a few games and they were to "tune you in" as to what was going on, you might, just might, enjoy it a bit more.

As in rugby, it would take a season of football to learn the majority of of the game. For instance, take what goes on with the changes in teams. Just as one might change a defensive formation in rugby depending on many factors, the same occurs in NFL games. Add to that the fact that players of different abilities can be substituted on each play. Add to that the fact that the offense can do the same. This is what I mean when I say it is a game of chess.

Finally, in this brief discussion, add the two most fundamental and most important differences, those being forward passing of the ball and blocking an opponent from contacting the ball carrier. Forward pass = razzle dazzle excitement. Blocking = high speed violence.

I believe, overall, blocking is by far the biggest physical difference. It is out-and-out physical domination at a very personal level. Whilst scrum, ruck, and maul are team against team, blocking is one-on-one.

BTW... our rugby and footy coverage here sucks. Squash coverage sucks (of course, it's all blue dot and blue dot just plains sucks anyway). Cricket is limited to a half hour a week of highlights. At least we get two live Premiership games a week during the height of the season.

My problem (in being a fan of the Vikings from the days of Tarkenton and Page and Eller and Krause, et. al.) is that one week they will play like world beaters when absolutely nothing can go wrong, and the next week they play like a bunch of high school neophytes. They are 2-0 but could just as easily be 0-2.

Chicago looks like the old monsters of the midway.

Could be interesting in the black and blue division.
