We've all been inept at certain things, and suffered the shame that accompanies ineptitude. But how often do you hear about people being ept? When I first picked up a guitar I was hopelessly inept at playing it, but I practiced and practiced until I finally became reasonably ept. I love being ept, and I bet you do too. Then there are inert people...those who help hold couches in place and give televisions a reason to exist. I despise the inert! I am on the lookout for people who are ert. Seriously ert. I want to hang out with lively, ert people who are active and energetic. Here's to the ert! And then there are the inane...like my friend BDiBR. They are an embarassment to society. The inane are frequently also both inept and inert! Shocking. What we need are more people who are not only ept and ert, but also ane. Eptitude, ertia, and anity are much to be desired. The point of this thread is: got any more great words like these? Feel free to contribute them now if you do... Thanks to Jives for this idea. - LH |

I have a friend who is so souciant that she's in a constant state of anxiety worrying about what people will think of her behaviour, her looks, her clothing, etc. I have tried to steer her in the direction of therapy, but she won't go because she's afraid that she might not meet with the therapist's approval. It's a real conundrum. Or is it an addendum? Well, anyway, it's a problem. She gets ebriated regularly in order not to lose control of her judgement or vital functions. - LH |

Did you know that Sax Rohmer wrote a series of books about "The Sidious Doctor Fah Kyu Tu" before he did the famous "Fu Manchu" series? It flopped. People weren't interested in a sidious Chinaman at that point in history. Times have changed though. I think novels about sidious Chinese might actually sell now, if marketed correctly. - LH |

Ambiguous means that you are guous, but guous on both sides, much as ambidexeterous means that you're as good with your left hand as you are with your right (dexter being the right). Therefore, unambiguous means that you are not ambiguous, and are therefor guous. In the same way unambidexterous means that you are not ambidexterous, but not necessarily right-handed. Clear? |

The Minister announced his intention of introducing a scheme of tax relief for refurbishing run-down property, but when they looked it up in the dictionary to draft the appropriate legislation (tax law requires very careful drafting!) they discovered that the correct word is furbish, so that "refurbishing" would only apply to doing a place up the second time. |
