Jack qua Jack,

if you are singing "i don't feel no ways tired", presumably you know the lyrics? would you mind terribly if i asked you to post them? the song is special to my mom, but she doesn't remember any of it and i would love to be able to sing it for her.

thanks!
emily

Emily

I only know it as a repeated chorus.

I don't feel no ways tired.

I've come too far from where I started from.

Nobody told that the road would be easy

I don't believe he brought me this far to leave me.

The inimitable Henry Clay Work wrote Grandfather's Clock, Liam. Do a search on his name in the DT for a treat (hope theyre all still there) and find out what else he's created that you know.

In public? Hmmmh...At 1-2 songs per party, kind of hard for me to come up with 10 (I tend to repeat myself), but here's my current 10 favorites:

1. Smuggler's Song - Kipling/Bellamy, my perennial favorite
2. Logie O'Buchan - trad., as sung by Cilla Fisher
3. Willie and Nancy - Les Barker (for "Broken Tokens" at NOMAD)
4. Canaday-I-O - trad.; AKA "The Wearing of the Blue", a transvestite ballad a la Nic Jones
5. Maid of Cabra West - trad.; from Frank Harte
6. Whaur' Will We Gang? - A. Mitchell; a fine song about the death of the fishing trade
7. When This Old Hat Was New - trad.; my husband's song, I sing harmony all through
8. The Outside Track - Lawson/Hallom; I've added Lawson's first verse back to the song
9. Lonely Waterloo - trad./Sproule
10. Coal, Not Dole - forget author, but learned from Coope, Boyes and Simpson

Kendall,

Would you care to post the words to "The Folkie". I like parodies of songs I know, 'cause I already know the tune and I only have to learn the words.

Just start a separate thread with the lead LYR ADD:. I'll be keeping an eye out.

Thanking you in advance.

Subject: ADD: The Folkie (Parody of The Boxer)^^^
From: kendall morse (don't use)
Date: 23 Sep 99 - 07:45 PM

Here goes Roger
THE FOLKIE
Oh I am a folk musician tho' my songs are seldom sold, 'cause I masacre the music with three feet of spanish chipboard and a capo..
I do requests, just the ones that have three chords in them and disregard the rest
Seeking free beer and expenses I come looking for a job.
but, I never get no offers, just a come-on from some groupie in Lower Sackville..

I do declare. I've had problems with my sex life since I fell and sprained my wrist,
and, my other songs are just as bad as this.
refrain la la la etc.

On the stage I stand so bravely for a folkie is my trade
and I carry the reminder, of every gig I ever played
like at the legion,
I fled in fear, with the imprint of a Moosehead bottle stamped behind my ear,
and a voice that yelled "Dont play that shit in here!!"
la la la etc

Oh, I've sung the folk tradition with my finger behind my ear,
'cause half the stuff I'm singing, I just cant bear to hear
but, I'm an artist.. bar after bar,
to the rhythm of a beat up old 5 string K-Tel guitar.
la la la

In St. Peter's town one night I clean forgot the second verse,
so, I sang the 27th... twice as loud.. and in reverse..
and no one noticed...
I took a bow, and, a long look at my wrist watch made some faces at the growd.
la la la

I've got my act together now, I've got it figured out,
dropping hairballs of string rosin, mainlining on Stout,
and having hangups,
pick up my guitar in vain, but, they're leaving, they are leaving,
and the Folkie still remains in this cruddy bar to sing one last refrain..
la la la

I've now sung at the Starry Plough six times, one song each time:

1. Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye (Irish)
2. My Grandfather's Clock (Work, mentioned above)
3. Jimmy Brown, the Newsboy (Carters?)
4. Times Are Getting Hard (A dust bowl ballad--or perhaps from an earlier hard time)
5. Free Grace (A spiritual from the Georgia Sea Island )(not a good choice: I usually sing bass and I was messing up the lead)
6. Abilene (Bob Gibson, last two verses my own)

Next week, maybe Green, Green Grass of Home
Upcoming: An Irish Ballad (Tom Lehrer), Mrs. McGrath (Irish), The Hermit (from an Oscar Brand "Bawdy Songs and Backroom Ballads" album), Finnegan's Wake, The Mountains of Mourne (Percy French), The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Joe Hill, Hard Travellin', Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues (George Frayne ["Commander Cody"]--this is the song I sang for Dan Milner and his partner Bob)...

Okay, there are twelve titles... some are songs, some are tunes as I tend to finish off a song by playing a tune. They represent the last three 'warm-up' spots I've done at the Railway (two for John Kirkpatrick, and one for the 'Rocky Mountain Ploughboys').

The Hills of Connemara (song - mandolin) Poor Little Crocodile (tune - mandolin) The Folker (song - guitar - Fred Wedlock's parody on 'The Boxer') The Titanic (song - accordion) The Danish Double Quadrille (tune - accordion)

Dallas Rag (tune - Guitar) Big Yellow Taxi (song - Guitar - Joni Mitchell)

Coal Hole Cavalry (song - English Concertina - Ted Edwards) Jock Stewart (song - English Concertina) Planxty Irwin (tune - English Concertina) Ball o'Yarn (song - Anglo Concertina) Black Joke (tune - Anglo concertina)

It seems like I've been singing the same 10 songs for about 10 years (or at least that's what the various audiences must think!).
Over the past couple of weeks at sessions and over dinner with friends, there's been:
Follow Me 'Ome,
Sleep on Beloved,
Now Westlin' Winds,
Union Miners (Miners' Lifeguard),
Row on,
Along the Road of Time,
The Sailor's Prayer,
The King of Rome,
Manchester Rambler,
No More For Me.

If I were putting together a list for a short set tonight it would be:
Great High Wind (Trad?)
The Monkey and the Engineer (Grateful Dead)
Theme for an Imaginary Slasher Movie (Orig. Instr.)
I Crept Into the Crypt (Homer & Jethro)
Sweet Georgia Brown
Ain't Got Time to Sing the Blues (Orig.)
Medley: Temperance Reel, Sheehan's Reel, Swinging on a Gate
The Accident (John Prine)
Barefoot Boy with Boots On (Asa Carter)
Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette (Merle Travis)

Though not necessarilly in that order.
