Bravo gentelmen. A very good show. I especially liked Peter's input about the lyrics. I'm looking forward to the next TWO shows.

Why thank you folks. T'was fun. I made the decision to go for three shows instead of two, 'cause the guy just has SO many good pieces and we need more time to fit it in. A little bonus, was that a guy named Ron Cohen who hung out with Dylan in the Village called in. He reminded us that with all the literary influences that Bobby was soaking up.....he was soaking up a lot of recreational drugs as well! Ha Ha!

Hey, that's great, then I will only have missed a third! Figured out my problem so I should be able to get it next week. Sounds great!

It was fun, but the problems multiply! We had enough trouble not just sitting back and playing the whole of the first 3 albums -- choosing from the next 3 is even crazier.
yours, Peter T.

A serious thought from moi.

Thanks to Steve Latimer (who loaned me some CDs, so I didn't have to listen to my scratchy records) I've been playing a LOT of Dylan the last week, and one thing simply blows me away. NONE of the material is dated...and that's after forty years. The song "Oxford Town" (one I'd almost completely forgotten about) is so well constructed, I could hardly believe it. Once again, humour and irony injected seemlessly into a tough story.

Bukka White's "Fixin' to Die". The influence is there, but he simply makes it his OWN song. I could go on and on.

Weirdest thing of all: The first two albums are so out of tune I could hardly believe that there actually WAS a producer in the studio....but for some reason, it didn't bother me....and I'm a tuning freak.

Rick

Yeah Peter, I felt for you. You only played one from The Times They Are A-Changing, and I think that is a pivotal moment in Bob's Career. I had never thought of the Ship coming as a metaphor for the Apocalypse. It changes the way I'll listen to the song. The ones you played from the first two tended to be the better known ones. It would be so easy to play every song. Good luck with figuring out what to play in the next two. I'm sure they'll be as interesting as this one. Heck, you could easily do a whole show on Blonde on Blonde. He's a fascinating guy.

You're welcome Rick. I missed the first five minutes of the show. Did you end up playing "Talkin' Devil", I was looking forward to hearing it.

Steve

What I have never run across is a good term for what the "second period" musical style should be called. Greil Marcus in "Invisible Republic" gives about as good a description of the impact of that style, but he doesn't give a useable label. It is a sort of talking blues barrelhousing -- Dylan himself said that Blonde on Blonde captured the sound he was looking for. But I would be indebted to anyone who has a good way of describing the musical constituents -- Rick, Rick, where art thou?

yours, Peter T.
