I'm gonna respond to this as a genuine request. If it's wasn't, I'm hijacking the thread!

I regularly read newsgroups about the instruments I play: acoustic guitar, electric bass, upright bass, mandolin, bouzouki and concertina (wannabe!).

I like these websites: concertina.net, Co-mando, MandolinCafé.

My latest find is a site for bass and guitar:
bass and guitar learning site Lots of free lessons (tab AND sound!)

Rich McCarthy

Apologies---those aren't newsgroups! There was a mandolin newsgroup, but I can't remember the name now...

I used to read and post to several other forums. I only rarely get back to this one of late as well, but the reasoning is a little different.

I posted to a venue related Usenet newsgroup. After a time, and after some rather juvenile BS, I came to the conclusion that either I was growing up finally, or the people there were emotionally stuck permanently in their sophomore year of high school. So, it was a good change for me.

I'd love to frequent this place a heck of a lot more than I do, but what I found after nixing the above described NG was that life was pretty fun, and time has been a rare commodity ever since.

I heard about Mudcat as a folk music resource from Graham Moore and Dick Greenhaus at Whitby Folk Week in August 2000. I already knew about Digitrad as a song base, but wasn't aware of the Mudcat discussion forum until Tyke invited me to the Ducks' barbecue at Whitby Folk Week last year, and Bill Sables suggested I join Mudcat. I usually check Mudcat threads and UK music folk daily, but if I was in a less pressurised job I'd be out singing rather than logging on to virtual substitutes.

I stumbled on the Mudcat almost five years ago - can't believe it's been that long, actually! - soon after I got Internet access, and still read it nightly unless prevented by overwork, night out, or holiday. While listening to Radio Scotland via the Internet once a week I usually check uk.music.folk, rec.music.folk and rec.music.celtic but don't post - I get enough spam as it is. I try to check the latest news nightly (BBC, Speigel magazine), follow some links and belong to a German folk music mailing list - but that's it as far as regular internet use is concerned.

Afternoon Maire, hope you have a better week this week! I lurk on many forums and post to a few, including a couple of computer formums, an Irish folk song forum and a forum for Wingnuts ;-) Also AOL Northern Ireland newsgroup. Found Mudcat today while searching Google for lyrics to a Wolfe Tones song.

Perhaps I'm naive but does it really matter if this is a troll thread, other peoples online habits are interesting and many forums have similar thread started by members.

Mudcat, STARStreetonline message board (Does that count?), Pop Idol, S Club Banter, Bolt, and occasionally a couple of others.

Nearly exclusively Mudcat, for that takes time enough.

Wolfgang

(I'd really appreciate if Mudcatters who think a thread might have been started by a troll would take the simple action of not responding instead of responding why they are not responding. The silly action of posting that one is not going to post should be restricted to the silly unnamed thread)

Hmmm, for the last couple of years I ve only been posting in this forum, but I used to post quite reglarly over there at the Hatrack River forum ( for those of you who dont know its part of the official site for Orson Scott Cards alternaytive Amrecin history series the Tales of Alvin Maker), but dropped out as I was getting swamped with work. But Mudcat exclusively and when I have time I post everyday.

I mostly hang out at volunteer game development forums, where I can be useful as well as funny. ;)
They're sort of work-related, as I'm one of the Admins for two of the teams. (Hero6 and The Unknown Hero.) Wish I could create games and game music - and get paid for it! That would be great.

I check SourceForge a lot, too, as well as some php and html forums. Devshed is good, though I tend to just read.

I come here for the friends and the music, and especially the music history, though not as often as when I first joined, last year or the year before.

I also check a few other forums when I have time, and I'm on various mailing lists as well, for spirituality, health, computer stuff, etc.

There are other forums than Mudcat?

And Artbrooks - isn't this a Science Fistion board? You know, one of those "alternate realities" ones like "What Would the World Be Like if Folk Music Albums Always Went Platinum?"
