Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Lane Date: 17 Jul 02 - 12:28 AM Sounds like you all had a fine time.... I was in Yakima at Folklife, which was a joy... .maybe I'll make it the next time.... |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: JenEllen Date: 17 Jul 02 - 04:56 PM Alex and Genie, after the discussion about the melding songs, I have to thank you both for nearly getting me killed today! We already have the "Bill Bailey/Just Because", and the "In Heaven There Is No Beer/Hogan's Heroes"....add to the list "Jug Band Music" and Skynard's "Gimme Three Steps". Well I was cuttin' a rug Down at a place called the Jug With a girl named Linda-Lou.... ....An' I said 'Wait a minute, Mister I didn't even kiss her Don't want no trouble with you' An' the doctor said 'Give 'em jug band music....

Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Genie Date: 17 Jul 02 - 07:58 PM Good addition, Jen. But how did you come close to getting killed? Were you jamming while driving, or something like that? |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: JenEllen Date: 17 Jul 02 - 08:13 PM No Genie, I had one of those moments at work when the clouds parted, the sunbeams came down, the angels were singing (granted, singing skynard, but you get the idea)....I was running through various verses at work, and one of the station guys has this a squirt gun that he uses to keep the cat off of the plants on his desk. He pulled it on me, and I swear by the look on his face....if it had been a real gun?? (I'm also staying away from his plants, just to be on the safe side) |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Amos Date: 17 Jul 02 - 09:47 PM Suddenly I found myself looking down the business end of a fifteen-ounce Kresge's Seventy-five Cent Special.. my whole inventory of songs started flashing before my eyes. "Just shut up," he explained. LOL!! Not to worry -- if that's the biggest risk you're taking this week, we'll have to send you another round of wild-ass visitors to start some trouble for ya!! :>) I notice you carefully avoided telling the gang about the Police Blotter story. LOL!! A |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: JenEllen Date: 17 Jul 02 - 09:55 PM Wasn't nearly so bad except for the fact that he grabbed my favourite stethoscope from my bag, held it over the toilet and said "So help me god, if you so much as hum it again, I'll flush....I'm not kidding, Jen....I'll do it..." (he's got some strange thing where if you sing anything catchy, it's stuck in his head all day. To torture him, we walk in singing "Happy Birthday" or "Itsy Bity Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini" or something...drives him nuts) I managed to stay silent, but only just. |

Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Genie Date: 19 Jul 02 - 12:27 AM Great pictures, Jen! You even immortalized the head of my 1955 Martin, with Bridget sleeping by her. And that's a GREAT bull -- it's even got a hat in its lap! Amos looks right at home with him. An' you didn't catch anyone with their finger up their nose or anythin' 'barrassin' like thet. But you missed Sully surveying the crowd below. |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: rangeroger Date: 19 Jul 02 - 04:29 AM Oh my God, I'm in serious trouble. Lyrical Lady won a competition a while back in which the prize was a recording of me singing "Til I gain control again" and " Hobo's lullaby". She still hasn't received them.I need a copy. Quickly. Genie, it was the LC one. I watched Shrek and had to learn it. Got the words off a Cohen website, but couldn't quite fit words to chords and timing.( I didn't have a recording). Then I remembered a video I had of Leonard Cohen on Austin City Limits and knew I had heard it before. It wasn't there. I was then enjoying an evening of music-video watching, when,lo and behold, here is Cheryl Crow on Sessions at West 54th, alone with an acoustic Gibson. singing Halleluia. Capoed 1 in A-flat. Playable ad singable. I just got in from Salem,Oregon, where I went to work on Monday Morning. The cat missed me, so I had to sing it a song. I'm dead tired and will tell more later. By the way the cats are Sully and Brrrrrrdddddddgggett. And Angus responds to "Where's the golf ball" rr PS.I have seen Cleatus mounted to Wassup Dock and he is blue. |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: GUEST,Genie Date: 19 Jul 02 - 11:03 AM Roger, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has, it seems, been used as background in a number of films and TV shows, including the season finale of "The West Wing" this year. This thread has the lyrics, chords, and a discussion of various artists who have recorded it. As I said, I'm really teed that I had to miss hearing you sing it. I hope someone got it on tape or mini disk. I'm pretty sure that when I sang "Gain Control" and those other mellow songs with you late Saturday night/early Sunday morning, there were no recording devices going. So I'll just hope that someone recorded you doing those songs before I got back from Seattle. I think someone may have recorded the group doing "Hobo's Lullabye" later on Sunday morning. Genie |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Deda Date: 19 Jul 02 - 11:28 AM Well, now Amos, I think you musta missremembered somewhat. As I reecall, you'n'me jess throwed Maisy in there cuz she was having fits agin, face bright red and fists flying an shriekin' her dang lungs out, so's they could hear her in the next holler over and they wuz thinkin' we couldn't sing worth piss, and we wuz plumb fed up with her bein ornery and gittin' more grits than the rest of us. An she was fit to win her some ugly contests, too, iff'n we let her growd up--why, she shore woulda beat the hounds in a dog show, an' well we jes' couldn't have that happen to Old Blue number 'leventy seven. It war a damn good thing we did, too -- everybody's in the whole holler's bin a damn patch more peace-able ever since. I seem to remember we throwed a coupla pizen-snakes in after her fer good luck an' good measure, but the pigs ate 'm. Dessert, I reckon. |

Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Amos Date: 25 Jul 02 - 05:42 PM For those who wanted to know about the other half of the recordings, which were on the red MDR, they have been cut to CD and sent to Jen Ellen. MP3s were also sent on a separate disk. They include the following Camp Runamuck Hits: Roll On Columbia 4:30 Mudjack Courtin' In The Kitchen 2:49 Amos Illegal Smile 3:40 RangerRoger Down In The Arkansas 3:08 MAG Peabody's Coal Train 2:46 RangerRoger Some Kinds of Love 4:00 Mudjack Sweet Wyoming Home 3:38 Genie Nightriders Lament 4:05 Mudjack Cat Came Back 4:04 Mousethief Sylvie 2:36 Genie Honey Come On Home 2:11 Mousethief Lydia. (Well it was a Congress of sorts, huh?) Thanks again to all the kind, gracious, generous, bright-eyed and big-hearted good folks who were there. A |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: GUEST,MAG at work Date: 25 Jul 02 - 05:53 PM Erg; does the recording say how off the cuff that rendition of "Down in the Arkansas* that was? I would hate for Art to think I had so butchered it. -- MA |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Amos Date: 25 Jul 02 - 07:17 PM Well, dear MAG, I would say that the entire tape is redolent with off-the-cuffness of the most unmistakeable sort, so you have little to worry about there. As for butchery, the Yakima was running red for miles that weekend so dinna fasch thysel' :>)) Love, A |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Genie Date: 25 Jul 02 - 08:10 PM "Other half of the recordings," Amos? What's on the first half? I hope someone got RR doing "Hallelujah!" and you and Jen doing "In Spite Of Ourselves," some of Amergin's poetry, and a few other gems, including some of our group jamming. Speaking of the latter, I thought there were other people singing/playing along with me on several of those songs ("Summer Wages," "Sweet Wyoming Home," "Summertime," and "Sylvie.") There were times when the whole group seemed to get into the act, and I do hope some of it made it to tape or disk. Anyway, I'll look forward to hearing our not-ready-for-prime-time "Camp Runamuck Hits." Genie |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Amos Date: 25 Jul 02 - 08:26 PM Genie: There were two MDRs in use; one was mine, one Jen's. The first half, mentioned above, is whatever Jen captured to tape and offered to distribute further up in the thread. The performer names I listed were simply the name of whoever the primary performers were -- almost all the songs are singalongs. I leave to Jen's good judgement how she wants to distribute the riches! **bg** RHIP, RHIR as we used to tell the sailors! A |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Lane Date: 25 Jul 02 - 11:13 PM Jen was kind enough to share a recording, the "first half", I guess, with me - wonderful stuff! Thanks so much for sharing it, Jen Lane |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Genie Date: 26 Jul 02 - 04:11 AM OK, I give. What's RHIP, RHIR? |

Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Lane Date: 28 Jul 02 - 08:29 PM Just came back from a wonderful weekend at the Stevenson, WA Bluegrass Festival - great! Perhaps the best part, however, was the chance to meet Mudjack. I ran into him playing at a jam, doing a couple of my favorite tunes, after which we played a few and got to know each other a little - great guy, and a heck of a lot of fun to play music with. Thanks, Jack, it was great to meet you and I hope to see you, and some of these other folks soon! Lane |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Amos Date: 29 Jul 02 - 09:06 AM Couldn't agree more. A |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: MMario Date: 29 Jul 02 - 09:24 AM I'm about halfway through the tape I got sent (THANK YOU!) and as usual with "mudgathers" not only some excellent music - but the best parts ore the "bonus tracks" they don't bother to mention!!!! 'May the itsy bitsy spider rise again!'; 'Why must I be a teenager in jail', etc. And I would REALLY like the lyrics to 'Bear Farmers' |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: Genie Date: 29 Jul 02 - 03:10 PM Ah, MMario, you got some of the general musical silliness, too--not just whole songs. I hope that included Alex's stirring lyrical stylings on "Bop ba ba bop, dip-di-dip-di-dip...etc. on "Blue Moon!" *G* Genie
PS |
Subject: RE: Pacific NW 'Catter Gather: PART THREE From: JenEllen Date: 29 Jul 02 - 04:42 PM Great news, Lane. And you are right, Mudjack is a heckuva guy. Yeah, Genie. I left that whole thing whole, from the spider all the way through to Roller Derby Queen.... There really wasn't any way to split it up without losing some serious grins! *g* And somehow I knew MMario would enjoy it (hey, he dug the alphabet song, why not the itsy bitsy spider?)
***REITERATION FROM ABOVE*** So to the folks that have sent PM's and e-mails about getting a recording, keep in mind I have the kindest of hearts when I say this, but I couldn't give a rat's ass about your financial details, or Max/Mudcat's either for that matter. Mudcat Honor System in play. You can send him something, anything, nothing, whatever you think is fair, doesn't matter. I don't have the time or inclination to check up on everyone, all I really need is a snail-mail address to send music too, okay? After all, this is folk music, and not the IRS... *g* Paws crossed, the next batch will go out in the post later this week. Thanks to all for their patience too. ~JE
