Brucie, my understanding is that W. C. Fields actual last words were:

"On the whole, I'd rather be in Philadelphia."

A friend of mine went on the BBR Radio 4 quiz programme, "Brain fo Britain" (presented by Robert Robinson), about five or six years ago. She was asked, "The last words of which U.S. President were, 'I have a terrible headache ?'".

Quick as a flash she replied, "Kennedy". As the audience choked on guffaws, she realised her mistake and tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube by saying, "Sorry - I meant Lincoln".

Even the normally imperturbable Robinson had to rebuke the audience by saying, "It's not funny".

Re. the death of General Sedgwick (which as JohnInKansas pointed out, I spelled incorrectly in my first post); the Confederate army did possess a small number of Whitworth sniping rifles. They had a smaller bore than the Enfield rifle which equipped the British army and many Confederate troops, and could take a more powerful charge. So, it was not impossible for a Whitworth bullet to arrive ahead of the bang, if the unfortunate General was picked off with one of these.

(Whitworth rifles were not really practical as general issue weapons. They quickly fouled and became almost impossible to load.)

HuwG ... off topic in some sorts here, but u might find this interesting ... ... John Kennedy once shocked Britain's (then) Prime Minster Harold Macmillan in telling him "he had to have sex every day or else he got a headache".

I think you're correct about that, Uncle DaveO. But I like the other too. Both fall so well within the parameters of the character he projected. I understand that he actually gave large sums of money to orphanages during the course of his life. He was not the Scrooge he wanted the world to think he was. Interesting man. Of course, as he said, "Anyone who hates dogs or kids can't be all bad." And he wasn't.

Not his last words. The Philadelphia comment is the epitaph on his tombstone.

Way off topic:

Something I have never heard discussed is what happens in the first moment or two (or three?) after a person is beheaded. I would imagine there is no pain because the path is broken but would the person still be able to think for that moment? Would the person be aware that s/he is near as dead as can be?

I remember accounts such as one woman whose eyes "looked accusingly" at her accuser. Is that possible, do you think?

I thought that for most of my life. It was a shock to me, too. Didn't find out until I was in my late 40s. Peed me off. It would have been a great tombstone. Better than the one he has, that's fer shore.

Susu's Hubby, I don't get the implication of your remark of 2:06. I presume you are referring to Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend. Please keep in mind that Nicole was no longer Simpson's wife, no matter how often she has been called "his wife"; she was not cheating on him; they were divorced.

"A horse ! A horse ! My kingdom for a horse !" - Richard III (allegedly).

"Is that straight" - Jesse James (allegedy, straightening a picture frame before being shot in the back by Bob Ford)

"A woman rang the Weather Centre, and said she'd heard that there was a hurricane on the way. Well don't worry - there isn't" - UK Weather Forecaster Michael Fish, hours before "The Great Storm" of 1987 killed 13 people and uprooted half the trees in the South and Midlands.

While not quite last words, they seem to very appropriate to this thread.

This afternoon, while napping on the couch my 5 year old niece approached with 2 pieces of lathing strips (18"x1"x1/4"). Now said niece is very keen about swords and sword fighting, and is rather zealous in her attempts to get uncle Chip to teach her more.
She woke me when she placed one of her "swords" in my hands. Waving her other sword around, she looked at me, sans glasses, and a bit grumpy from having my afternoon nap disturbed, then she looked back at her sword, calmly looked back at me and removed the lathing strip from my hand. I heard her say as she headed for the kitchen for a snack...
"Probably not a very good idea."

Chip2447 (not grumpy after that)

Liz the Squeak, you are correct. The quote was to be placed on Spike Milligans headstone, however a fight ensued within his family and the last I heard no inscription has been made.

It's a bit like one I read about some time ago which read -

"She always said her feet were killing her, I guess she was right"

From Ned Kelly, Australia's famous bushranger, just before he was hung ; "tell them I died game".
And to me, from our destroyers Engineering Officer just before I was put ashore in Danang to fly to Saigon and then back to Oz ; "don't worry - its all organised". The Americans then put me on a plane to Phu Bai where they lost me for 2 weeks and I was being shot at. Whenever I hear, don't worry - its all organised, I twitch a little.
