Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: Azizi Date: 01 Feb 06 - 09:53 AM Amos, ou talkin to me? You TALKIN to me? You talkin to ME?! [well I am a female Sagittarius, so at least the firey feminine part is right and I'm interested in the astrology so the stars part fits too. But I don't know about the "hunk" part. I thought only men could be hunks]. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 06 - 11:25 AM **NOTICE** Pedant alert! I consider it reasonably important for communication and civility to make what I say here conform to some basic standards, though NOT as if I were writing for publication. If you do NOT care how your posts appear, I guess you may ignore my pedantry. (You may spell as you wish, of course, but SuperSearch sure has problems with mind reading.) ahem! We do not all have equal skills or abilities. I am a very mediocre typist, but a moderately good speller. I have some problems with my eyes and I have a nerve in my neck that causes posture problems. I have to be careful how I sit to type; I have to look at my fingers when I type; I ought to double check before I push the 'post' button, as my brain gets out of sync, and I sometimes leave out words. I understand that others may have dyslexia, varying amounts of education, language differences and personal 'preferences' about their typing habits and are sometimes in a hurry. What I do NOT understand is why people who have problems will wear glasses for their eye problems, but not use a spell checker to improve what they post. (Unfortunately, there is no grammar & punctuation checker yet). When I am going to be on Mudcat, I use TinySpell. It takes ONE click to change 'wierd' to 'weird'...and I can instruct the program to tolerate my wish to sometimes use 'thru' rather than spelling out 'through'. I can also turn OFF the warning 'beep' if I wish to intentionally spell like bobert to make a point. There are various ways to do check spelling.....some type in a word processor and paste into the box here; I just prefer to do it 'on the fly'. (Of course, TinySpell is a PC program, but MAC users have spell checkers also). *end pedant alert* |

Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: GUEST Date: 02 Feb 06 - 05:18 AM Surely it is misspell, not mispell? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: GUEST,bagpuss Date: 02 Feb 06 - 05:21 AM And arguably misspelt rather than mispelled. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: Peace Date: 02 Feb 06 - 10:23 AM "Surely it is misspell, not mispell?" Surely it is. The title is facetious (which is, incidentally, one of two words in English in which the vowels appear in order (a,e,i,o,u)). FYI. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: Bill D Date: 02 Feb 06 - 11:01 AM Misspelt & misspelled are both allowed in my spelling checker. I 'suspect' that the former is more common in the UK. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mispelled Werds From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 02 Feb 06 - 11:02 AM How odd that 'GUEST' noticed that 'misspell' was misspelled (or misspelt if you're a lazy colonial) :-) and felt the need to comment on it, yet the misspelling of 'words' appears to have escaped him (or her or it). |
