Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: Richard from Liverpool Date: 10 Jun 11 - 02:51 PM This thread is a blatant opportunity to shamelessly promote my blog http://aliverpoolfolksongaweek.blogspot.com/ - it certainly fits the bill. |

Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 11 Jun 11 - 05:23 PM I really hate recording myself. Get nervous, start making mistakes, try to cope with shaking hands... Had a short go though. http://www.jonbanjo.com/well.mp3 |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: Jeri Date: 11 Jun 11 - 06:59 PM "Well"? Dave Richardson's Calliope House-- I used to know that! Nice job on the picking, Jon! |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 11 Jun 11 - 07:23 PM First tune is Going To The Well For Water, Jeri |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: Jeri Date: 11 Jun 11 - 07:25 PM Thanks, Jon. I know I've heard that before, but like so many tunes, I didn't know the name. |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: GUEST,Martin Date: 12 Jun 11 - 07:25 PM Always enjoy this style of Guitar |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 12 Jun 11 - 08:03 PM I'll pretend you are referring to the last link to a song/tune here. That was an (entry level type instrument) Ozark Octave mandolin, not (say) a D28 Guitar. |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: Tootler Date: 13 Jun 11 - 05:33 PM Nice playing Jon and good choice of tunes. I had problems when I started recording myself, but as time goes on I am getting less nervous and am able to get things right with fewer "takes". I find if I don't get it right after the first two or three times, I usually get worse and worse. Then I find it best to pack up and try again some other time or record something else. It also helps to be comfortable with your material and be prepared to record at a slightly slower tempo on quick tunes as I find I am then less prone to mistakes. |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 13 Jun 11 - 05:44 PM Thanks for the advice. I've certainly noticed things getting worse and worse... When I have a go, I do try to pick on what I think are my safest tunes and generally go for fewer notes than I'd perhaps attempt if in a session - although that can depend on mood, how fast a tune is going, whether (rarely) I've wound up leading the tune, etc. |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: Phil Edwards Date: 14 Jun 11 - 04:15 AM Here are some songs I've sung; mostly but not exclusively traditional. (To be precise, one each by MacColl, Peter Bellamy, Lal & Mike Waterson and, er, me - the rest are all trad.) I'll second Richard's plug for his Liverpool folk songs site - a terrific resource and some fine singing. |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: olddude Date: 14 Jun 11 - 05:04 PM Very nice everyone, thank you |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: Tootler Date: 14 Jun 11 - 05:14 PM From: GUEST,Jon - PM Date: 13 Jun 11 - 05:44 PM Thanks for the advice. One other thing I thought of. I find having dots/words in front of me when I am recording helps. It removes one more stress factor. After all, no one need know. |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 14 Jun 11 - 05:21 PM I can imagine that being helpful for some but I'm afraid I'm not a sight reader. (stumbling block when I've tried is timing. I seem unable to put say knowing one note is twice as long as another into practice). |
Subject: RE: How about some British Catter Music? From: olddude Date: 14 Jun 11 - 09:11 PM Joh forget the dots, play from your heart, from what I heard you do ... and that makes all the difference. You do a great job my friend |
