As many of you know, I lost my voice to cancer. It is starting to come back and I have high hopes to be able to speak normally and maybe even to sing again. It certainly has been something to look forward to and I've been feeling good about it.
Now, today I was working on my antique car, and the drop light was in my way, so I went to grab it even though it was close to the fan with the engine running. It was a stupid, careless thing to do but I did it anyway. The fan caught the first two fingers of my left hand and the sudden pain told me I had one glove too many. Sudden panic and hellish pain!
When I withdrew my hand I was sure I had lost two fingers but as luck would have it they were bleeding but not severed!

A word to all who work with your hands around any kind of machinery, BE CAREFUL!

You should see my Claw!

The top 5mm of the middle finger on my right hand got severed by a suddenly slamming door a few years ago, two weeks after I had bought my first clasical guitar with a view to playing flamenco.

I had plastic surgery to fix it, but it is a bit shorter and my fingernail curls round and down like an eagles talon.

I Had to learn how to finger pick withut that finger, and the flamenco option is kaput, but it is all more than made up for by the fun that can be had with it when playing scary monsters with the kids.

The moral of my story? - Don't argue about potatoes!

When I was in college I got slapped for having loose fingers....

Kendall, you DID go the emergency room, didn't you?

Wearing gloves around machinery is damn dangerous too. The glove gets caught in the moving parts and your hand gets dragged in after it in a split second. Same goes for other bits of clothing. That famous dancer (whose name escapes me at the moment) got killed when her looooong stylish scarf which was flying in the wind got caught by the wire wheel on the sports car she was riding in. A bad way to go...but a damn fast one!

The safest way to work around machines would probably be to do it naked...with your head shaved bald...and keeping in mind to watch out for exposing those dangly parts!

shudder There are times when we get luckier than we deserve. Congratulations.

My brother severed the tips of three fingers on a saw blade. He said that for a moment he leaned against the wall holding his spouting hand and wishing mightily that he could turn back the clock just 30 seconds...

Kendall,

So sorry to hear of your encounter with one o' yer fans. It's great you didn't lose a finger 'cause you'd have to unzip yer fly to count to ten.

Whatever! Be well, my friend!

What the f**k, Skipper??????????? Do you have a deep seated fear of performing again? Lissen..... if you are going to persist in this, would you do me a favor and leave me the friggin' Appollonio? In fact, I will take the Taylor, as well.

I have every intention of you and I, and maybe Bruce Phillips, performing on the same stage. Would you please quit trying to tube this?

Thanks.

Your buddy with all his fingers,

Mick

Virtually all of my working life was spent repairing cars and building others to race. It is very easy to become "cavalier" in your approach to some very dangerous situations. Glad you're okay Kendall and it was just a scare.

You're kinda' like the three legged hog......too good to eat all at one time. You seem to be messing up parts and pieces too and YOU are definitely way too good to give up at one time!

And never mistake a car jack for a ramp or hoist. The jack I had looked very sturdy, with a big old screw with threads like a big old vise. I worked under the car awhile, slid out from under, and at that instant the threads all peeled away like so much mucus and the car came down. One of a couple moments in life when I came within a second of death, without getting a scratch.

The most dangerous woodworking tool is a hand planer, IMO.
I have a sensitive fingertip to prove it.

I once worked with a mechanic who had a funny finger. He put it in the timing hole of a Mini because the marks were grubby. "Well, the flywheel looked stationary in the timing light."

Reminds me, there's a nautical matter I want to pick your brains about, concerning navigational errors on the Maine coast...watch for the thread.

Danged, Capt'n... Ouch...

Hey, you know what they say about folks who shouldn't be around sharp objects, don'tcha???

But nevermind that question 'cause I ain't gotta clue what they say... My antique car ain't got no fan... Okay, it does but it in a fan housing... But that danged old Karmann Ghia has figurated a few ways to hurt me over the years but never with a fan...

Glad to hear (pun not intended) that yer voice is comin' back...

...'cept it's prolly gonna cost you a good wife when you start up with all them stories of yers...

That afraid-to-look moment is a good workout for your heart, eh?

I was winding to a spool with a nifty invention my boss thought up involving a drill that spun the spool while I held on and steered. Wearing heavy leather work gloves helped, until I looked aside for ONE SECOND and was one gloved hand was caught up and twisted, and I couldn't stop it. By the time I could get the glove off, I was SURE I'd leave some inside. Very, very lucky.

Couldn't play anything before OR after that.

Glad you're ok, Kendall.

I've worked on cars since I was 16 with never any wound more serious than burning my arm on a hot muffler. Always been very careful, but today, well...she was just waiting for me to make a mistake. Maybe I'll change her name to Christine.

Bobert, have you got a Karmann Ghia? I had one of those, it was a 1958 and I loved it. She made me feel like Sterling Moss.
Come to think of it, so does Jacqui.
