In case anyone thought that England were the only team representing Britain and Ireland in the European Championship, I'd just like to say well done Ireland... both of them. N. Ireland must have pulled off two of the most shock results of the tourney to date. First Spain and now Sweden and with only two players that play in the premiership. They now sit at the top of a qualifying group for the first time in 26 years. People in Belfast are calling for David Healey for first minister.

Well done the Republic too. They really needed that win and a good reslt against Slovakia who had drubbed Wales 5-1 in Cardiff. I still don't believe that Staunton is the man though. Roy Keane anyone?

Well gnu he's doing a fantastic job managing Sunderland. They were second from bottom of the league championship when he took over and now they are in real contention for promotion to the premership. Third in the table, one point behind Birmingham and 3 points behind Derby. I wonder what kind of a job he would make of the Irish national team.

Den The Championship or as I prefer to call it the 2nd division, is a very poor league consisting of teams that spend their time yo-yoing between both leagues, the present Sunderland team would get the four seasons treatment if they go into the top league, spring, summer, autumn and winter, and then relegation.

It must be soccer. Sweden sucks at rugby.

Ah, but if rugby were played in snow and ice, the Swedes might do well. Of course, so might Canuckistan... might.

Ard mhacha a chara it's not often I'd disagree with you, but I think that if Sunderland go back up Keane will keep them there. I'm not a fan of Roy (I can't forgive his actions in Saipan) but I know someone at the club whose opinion I respect and he tells me that Keane is inspirational as a manager and as a motivator. He is convinced that Keane was born to be a manager and he is predicting that Keane will be more famous for his prowess as a gaffer than for his prowess on the pitch
Fergus

Many a good Manager has been made to look ordinary when his Club is too poor to compete with the big spenders, turning donkeys into Derby winners,is not possible in the Premier League.
The 2nd Division or Championship is rubbish, proven time and again by almost all of the promoted sides over the past 10 years.
There is no denying that Chelsea bought themselves two Premier League wins.

I agree with much of what you say Ard but a good manager can make a difference. Ranieri didn't do much with Abramovich's money. It was when Mourinho came to Chelsea that we saw a difference. I think Steve Coppell will keep Reading up and he looks like he is building for the future with a young team. Sunderland are a big club and they have the resources to spend money to bring in some premiership quality. I think Keane has/will spend wisely.

Den Sunderland under Reid won the Championship with a record number of points, they finished 7th in the Premier the following year, two seasons later they were relegated and Reid got the boot.
Reading FC are having a good first season and I think Coppel is a better manager than Read, but watch them struggle next year, it is all about money, and Mourinho will go the way of Ranieri if he dosen`t keep coming up with trophies.
