Subject: Obit: Redlick Records RIP From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 02 May 07 - 12:26 PM Asmans, Mole Jazz, gone already, Ray's moved to Foyles, now Redlick Records, famous for blues (and some folk), announce the retiremnt of the proprietors. Orders may be placed during May, during June they'll clear up, no news yet if they can sell it as a going concern. It'll save me some money-their second hand lists are seductive- but sad news, especially as most big retailers don't carry many UK blues artists. RtS |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 02 May 07 - 03:52 PM That is bad news. But the cd retail industry is changing rapidly. The high st cd outlets will disappear in the next few years. And even though I do most of my cd shopping on line, I will miss record shops. Back in the 60s and 70s, I used to go to London quite often to visit folk/blues venues and buy lps. I once bought 36 albums over one long weekend. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: Mark H. Date: 02 May 07 - 04:16 PM If you haven't already done so, check out Red Lick while you can. They carry a lot of old-timey stuff. Shame to see them go: their catalogues were a good read and they were helpful on the 'phone. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 02 May 07 - 04:29 PM Yes. I've phone Red Lick a number of times and they were very helpful. And their catalogues! I used to go through them and ring items that interested me. Well, I must have ringed hundreds in very month. I think the problem with specialist outlets is that, historically, they had the information - the catalogues and contacts, but now the info is available on the net and shopping around gets you a better price. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: katlaughing Date: 02 May 07 - 04:37 PM That is really sad. I wish the internet made it easier for such concerns to keep going. For anyone who is interested: Red Lick records. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: fat B****rd Date: 02 May 07 - 05:05 PM Well, good luck to Ann and Ken. Always helpful and witty on the 'phone. Are they retiring to Greece ? They were big fans of Rembetika. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: melodeonboy Date: 02 May 07 - 05:58 PM Sad news. I presented a weekly blues hour on QBS (Qatar Broadcasting Service) from 1995 to 2005, and most of my stuff came from Red Lick. The service was good and, my word, that catalogue was a good two evening's reading; a real treasure trove! |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: MoorleyMan Date: 03 May 07 - 02:20 PM Oh dear, another great mailorder company going - let's not be too premature? But I'd seriously endorse those above comments - Ken and Ann always always so very helpful and obliging, catalogues excellent and informative, loads of interest every time - often too much for my meagre pocket to stand! Good luck to them in their well-earned retirement I say, but let's hope the company itself can be rescued, it's far too good a concern to go under. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: Brian Hoskin Date: 04 May 07 - 05:33 AM That's really sad, I've bought some real treasures from Redlick over the years. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 04 May 07 - 06:07 AM I guess what it needs is for a blues fan with experience of the mail order business who has some redundancy money to invest to buy it, move it to Scotland and offer discounts to old customers, friends and senior citizens.... RtS (would I get a triple discount, Charlie?) |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: fat B****rd Date: 04 May 07 - 11:33 AM Dash !! Thimbles, I just spent it all on a 3 bedroomed flat. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: Fred McCormick Date: 05 May 07 - 04:08 AM I feel like a part of my life is gone. There is some suggestion that someone else will take it over. But at the moment it all sounds too vague to offer any real hope. |
Subject: RE: Obit - Redlick Records RIP From: GUEST Date: 05 May 07 - 06:29 AM Blimey I am sad to hear the news Ken and Ann Smith are two of the best in the bussiness. I wish them both well for the future. I remember back in the 1980's just about commiting to memory how to spell penrhyndeudraeth the place in North Wales (i think it was) they used to be located and probably stil are,and I was so dissapointed when they went over to using a PO Box address as I no longer had the spelling challenge ha ha. What a shame if somebody doesnt take over their bussiness or is it too dificult now with big online retailers like Amazon in the picture stealing so many sales .
