Please be aware that the Essential Sing will move to the 'Black Horse' this year because the 'Rosie' is closed (problems with the lease, I believe). The Black Horse is on the same side of the Main Drag, up the hill from the Bridge and where Jay (the Landlord) is waiting make us welcome.
I understand that the English Music Session will be moving there as well.
We haven't received our contracts yet which is late even for Chippers but we think that we are fronting the Sings, Fri and Sat Folk Clubs and participating in 'It's Got To Have A Chorus' on Sun night.
Looking forward to meeting everyone again.

I'm sorry but my lemonade will be £1.50 this year. Of course if you are a mudcat you can have it for £1 but you must be able to prove you are a CAT!!!

Many thanks to the Mudcatters who supported my singarounds, and who helped me to run the folk club to time last night!

I really enjoyed the weekend and hope you others did too - Sue, I was glad to see that Herbaceous were out today, after atrocious weather yesterday.

Hovering Bob

There seem to be more hassles than usual for the Chippenham organisers this year. I have an e-mail dated 13 May, saying that I would get paperwork in the next few days.... I think that probably means tomorrow, when I get to Chippenham!

Nuts. Can't go!
No room at the Inn for any more stewards and I've just had a massive phone bill courtesy of all the people who decided to phone me while I was holidaying in Portugal!

I don't want to hear how good it was, or how the weather held out, I certainly don't want to know if the sessions were cracking or the concerts were delightful.

I'm off to cry in a quiet corner somewhere!

Plans for Herbaceous Border are still not completely sorted! (and I'm leaving home at lunch time today)
Likelihood is
Sunday 4.30pm -5.30/6 at bottom of High Street (or p'raps outside Bar Reva or the Rose and Crown)
Monday 11.30 - 1.0 at the Buttercross (or outside the Bar Reva same time or 11.30-12 outside Rose and Crown then 12.30-1.0 top of High Street by the Halifax, possibly processing between the two!!!!)

I shan't bore you with reasons why it's still so confusing. Anyone is welcome to play or dance. Come and join in!

"I view this differently" huh?
If you are attending the ceilidhs I have put all that Pete Rees told me on cresby.com - dance dates which is pretty much all of them.

call me a pedant but a paying punter for one night will want to know who to expect to choose the night, at those prices!. And if I am paying for her ticket - I don't expect to waste it on a band who don't play "waltzes" for a waltze, however few there are. So Peeping Tom & Sat are our choice, Sunday night is not.

The "at a Glance" on the website tells you what is happening but not the WHO thereof. not for ceilidhs - to make you buy the programme.

apart from the calling workshops which appear to be ceilidh oriented rather than square/contra/social folk - But Sheila Mainwaring calls them all and it will depend on who attends.

Of course, the dancers could buy a programme to help support the festival and as a souvenir any way.... ;-)

Yes, I expect the dance workshops with become clearer, when the programme arrives (the weekend before the festival, they said - but it never has arrived when they said in the past, so why should I be surprised) and we find out who's running them.
Then it's just a case of decoding the titles they give the workshops, and reading the bit about the caller, in case they drop some hints.
What they usually are (unless they say Cotswold or NW when they're probably Morris) is lots of expert dancers doing dances they might not do in their clubs, without a lot of laboured explanation. The ones marked 'American' will be squares and contras. The others probably Playford type.

Hi,
I will be stewarding for the first time. I want to get to some of the dance workshops, but can't work out what sort of ground they're covering - "Dance Workshop" don't tell you much, "English Dance Workshop" is only marginally better. OK, it IS better 'cos I don't want to do Scottish or Irish but I wouldn't mind a bit more info.

I'm trying to work out what I want to do, that I can get to when I'm off duty. There is so much choice, and at first glance a lot of workshops seem to clash.

Anyone got any more? Mitch, maybe?

Cheers,

Malcolm

Can't seem to get a handle on ceilidh/bands

website is understandably accurate (per se) but not over-informative - they sell programmes don't they?

Anyone with bands/days/times I can put it on the cresby.com

Free publicity is worth a bit more than you pay for it!

I would be there early if I didn't have root canal treatment to look forward to. Just don't make me laugh on Fri.

You should not have a problem with getting a ticket. The camping and hall spaces is not as limited as many years ago so the cut of point for sales is pretty high.

Some of the events may have to have house full signs so, as ever, the motto is "don't be late".

For those who camp and have a delicate sense of smell the good news is that the meat factory by the campsite has closed. The bad news for Chippenham is that the 300 jobs it provided have moved to Scotland.

Could be an interesting experience for us in Spare Parts as well. Sessions round our way tend to be run on a "taking turns round the room" basis so we aren't used to "jumping in".

This springs from developments at our own session at Bradford on Avon, where some of the less experienced members started meeting an hour earlier to practice playing tunes more slowly, but they did so following more-or-less normal session ettiquette.

So I want to run a slow session with a few ground rules, along the lines of 1) G and D (and relative minors) only 2) well known English tunes 3) played not too fast. The idea is to allow people the room to practice jumping in with a tune (no easy thing to do if you haven't done it before) in an atmosphere less 'threatening' than the wondrous session in the Rose and Crown barn. I think George Garside has done something similar at a couple of festivals.

If it comes off then with the Spare Parts teaching sessions, my sessions and the main sessions in the Rose and Crown barn we should have a short but complete course in playing in English sessions.

Chris"

That was what I was wondering about. Will certainly be at Spare Parts "learn the tunes".

It's going to be interesting, because both the Admiral's and my sessions have been well supported, to see how the change works out! I'm still hoping and intending that anyone who turns up wanting to sing will get a song at the Cause.

Sue - the pub on the corner is the Three Crowns. Yes, it gets crowded - but the welcome is always warm.

I think thanks are due to Bob and Gill Berry for taking note of requests made through Mudcat last year that the organised song sessions don't clash. Therefore, we don't have to make the choice this year about whether to support Herga Kitty or Mr & Mrs. Admiral, but can enjoy both.

I'll be there! Dancing with Exmoor on Sat and Sun. Good to hear that HergaKitty and the Admiral won't clash this year. Hope to get into both - but probably only briefly (unless it rains.....)

'Herbaceous Border' will also be on at some point. I'll post again when I have details of when and where so that anyone who wants to come and dance or play knows where to find us.

Are there any plans for singing in the evening/ late night? I seem to remember it was really hard work in the pub on the corner last year. (Forget what it's called)

Sue

There was talk of an intermediate/beginners session this year. Has that been confirmed?'

Yes, as Bryan says above. Spare Parts are doing English tunes practice sessions on Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m - noon and on Monday morning at the same time, venue to be announced.

We're also running our usual concertina part-playing sessions on Saturday morning (10.30 a.m - noon ) Saturday afternoon (2.30 - 4.00 ) and Monday afternoon (2.30 - 4.00 )and performing in a couple of places as well.

If you'd like the music in advance for the English tunes practice sessions or the concertina part-playing sessions please email me your postal address off-list and make it clear which sort of music you want.

Tootle pip,

I shall be there - doing my shifts in the comms caravan & joining in whatever sessions fit around 'em. It'll be good to get to both Kitty's and Tony & Pearl's sessions this year.

And I have a recollection of a promise from Mr Bliss that this year ...

See you all next week !

Henry

CMR will be there... we're doing a harmony workshop and the CHARM show with Mary and Anahata (with an exciting new ingredient - Linda Van Eyken dancing!!) but not sure what else. But Chippenham's always brilliant, and the Cause is the most wonderful venue for singing...

Hey Skipy - Manitas has been known to wear a dress in public, his is brown and orange. I tell you this so you don't wear yours as well... the only thing worse than wearing an identical dress is two guys wearing identical dresses.

I've just heard from Bob Berry that my singarounds will be running in the Cause again - but at a later time, 2-4, and for a change not head to head with the Essential Sing. So this means I will be able to get to the Admiral's singarounds for the first time in several years! Hope to see/ hear some of you in the Cause too.

Kitty

Looking forward to it. We're only working the first half but staying all weekend, so we should get to some sessions and singaround for once!

Tom
