Cough, hack, hack... ahem. Keep in mind that that intrument is basically a banjo neck stuck on a bazoukuloid body. YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO PLAY IT LIKE THAT!!! Well, not unless you're being terribly original and tasty.

If Jed's around, would you please post the lyrics?
(It's a lovely tune that could make a great song) It's also nice to have proof that Jed's got a top part as well as a middle. We now anxiously await the rest of him.

The lyrics, as I heard them were...

Da da du-du-du-du dum da die die do

Da da du-du-du-du dum da die die do

...and so on.

I hope this helps.

Nice banj-kenstein playing. Jed's a real talent.

Jed, I thoroughly enjoyed the video - once I got the darn browser to stop cutting it into little bits of sound.

gnu, I'm just a wee slip of a girl, and you're a big hunk of a Canuck, so how could I possibly put you in the sh***?

However, I shall have to think up some other suitable form of punishment.. Hmmm... was about to shout "gnu, cellar", but knowing who you'd be likely to meet there, and guessing that the gentleman in question probably has a couple of bottles of something + a banjo stacked away there, too, in all likelihood you wouldn't even consider that a punishment, soooo.. :o)

Back to the drawingboard.. Be afraid, gnu, be very afraid ;-)

Best wishes,

Bente

My wife's only comment to the clip was, "at least you could have combed your hair!" I told her that's why I wore the cap ... but then I did put her quote in the description.

I can't post the lyrics yet; still a secret ;-)

In the film I wrote the tune for, I was sitting in a whorehouse, playing banjo for one of the girls ... we'll see if the scene gets past the editor. But if it doesn't, I wouldn't be surprised if the melody still gets used. They had me play it a few times in various styles ...

Still, for the next little Youtube clip, I might put on some pants and comb my hair ... this first thing of a Monday morning filming may not be the wisest approach.

You didn't have any pants on and your wife commented on YOUR HAIR!!??
Then again, maybe it's just a guy thing. Sit around the house, drink beer orange juice, watch TV and occasionally shoot a music video in your... whatever it was you had on, or didn't.

Gotta watch that again and see if I missed anything...

Jed,

it`s not porn if you keep your clothes on...

If you think your countrymen are to prudish to see you perform without clothes, certain countries in northern Europe are much more liberal....

The filmmaker told me he'd send along a clip from the movie - so I may update that YouTube film when he does. The pretty young woman in the scene with me will be worth watching - but the banjo bits ought to sound pretty good. We worked on getting a good sound before the cameras rolled ...

Very nice!

Let us know when the movie airs ~ on The History Channel, is it? And if they give you actual footage of yourself in the film (or even from the cutting-room floor), definitely post it on up there! We'll see what the Mrs. has to say about your presence in a 19th century hoorhouse.

I take it that you're not wearing your Lonestar Stout t-shirt in the actual shoot?

LOL - had to be in period attire for the shoot. They didn't object to my steel string banjo, though ... I wrapped a leather strap around the head of my Deering banjo, but it was probably mostly out the shot.

I did have a gut strung banjo with me, and we sued that for some of the sound track work in studio conditions ... steel strings sounded better with the ambient noise of the whorehouse lobby ... so that's what we used.

Interesting that the visually-correct old style banjo was used offscreen for sound recording, but that you used your modern steel-string banjo for the shoot.

I'd have thought you might have had to use the older instrument on camera, even if it meant overdubbing the sound some kind of way. Probably not practical.

Also, the director was probably not nearly so hyper-aware of your intrument's appearance and period-authenticity as you (or I, or any musician) would be. Like most potential viewers of the film, he likely sees a banjo simply as a banjo, without the slightest awareness of such details as steel strings, modern tuning machines, etc.

A shiny new appearance, however, would not necessarily be inauthentic. When we visualize a 19th-century instrument, we automatically picture a pretty well-weathered item. We have to think twice, or even three times, to realize that an 1850-model banjo probably looked a lot different in 1851 than it does now ~ clean, glossy, unscathed, etc.; pretty much like a 2006 model looks today!

Yeah - this is a docu-drama ... this quick scene and the sound track are not required to period perfect. It is the story retold from the historical record that matters. The truth is, under the audio conditions of the scene, steel strings worked best. Under the circumstances it was the right decision.

If you look closely at some scenes, I am sure you'll see in the distance modern wires suspended from telephone poles - and that sort of thing ... these issues will be hard to notice, but they were not major obstacles. Again, it is the telling of the tale that matters most for this film.

Jed ought to be safe enough up the Dallas area ~ assuming he's at home and not out on the road.

There'll be high winds and ugly dark clouds as the west side of Ike blows through that area tonight or tomorrow, but nothing like the devastation down along the coast in Galveston and Houston.

(Hope I'm not jinxing you, Jed!)

We're missing most of it, it seems. My wife was just complaining that the weather always seems to miss us!

Galveston and Houston wee hard hit. We're not so sure just how bad yet, but most people evacuated so loss of life and injury should be low - but property damage from wind, fire and flooding will be substantial. We're expected to see some of it this afternoon. The dark sky and light rain is here now, but the storm's loosing gas and heading even more north - so we may just get a rainy day with a bit of wind - and possibly not even too much rain.

Thanks Les, for the comment on the vids!

Jed, in the words of the vernacular South, tell your wife to "Hush, yo mouth!" I don't think she wants the kind of weather that comes in off the Gulf even though it's "interesting". After Katrina three years ago and Gustav last week, even those of us that are 150+ miles from the Gulf don't want any more of this for a while.

Not much in the way of details on Galveston or Houston is coming out yet. I guess the media either can't get back in or they're not able to get communications out yet. I'd expect based on the pre-landfall stats on storm surge that Galveston and Houston (ship channel area) will probably look like the Mississippi Gulf Coast did after Katrina. Hope not, but the water got awfully high.

Ike is pretty huge, which means that even if the wind speed is "low" enough to categorize the storm as a "2" or "3" rather than the scarier "4' or "5," wind-driven storm surge affects a wider area for a longer time than for a more compact storm.

Just after 5 pm Thursday evening, we had hurricane-like conditions in New Orleans, when the eye of Ike was about 275-300 miles due south, way out in the Gulf. Gusty winds, intermittent thunderstorms, and the indescibably weird quality of light in the air that comes only with tropical-depression weather. I don't know if it has something to do with static electricity or ozone or what, and I certainly can't adequately describe it, but it is unmistakeable.

Large parts of southern Louisiana, where Gustav hit pretty hard a week or so ago, flooded all over again Thursday and Friday. In some areas, in fact, the Ike flooding was higher (worse) than last week's, even thoug the center of Ike was much farther away than Gustav had been.

I had already discovered some of Jed's YouTube videos.   They are wonderful -- but that was no surprise since I already have the Soul Of A Wanderer album and a couple of Jed's songs on the Mudcat CD: Orchid and Mudcat CD: Violet CDs (and since, from the album cover, I already knew what a handsome dude he was). :D

Jed, I hope having some songs on YouTubes brings some well-deserved publicity and new album sales.

Looks like the direct hit on the Galveston sea wall had an 11 foot surge, as opposed to the 25 they had predicted, (thankfully) but of course that is plenty damaging enough.

Houston has some wind damage and power is out for much of the city.
