From: Severn Date: 05 May 07 - 10:37 AM The Mayo Clinic will be open extra hours all month with special rates for those would-be Mexicans-For-A-Day trying to see how low they can sink-o. All those beer company adds have made it their best payday in between St. Party's Day and Octoberfest! Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinqo de Mayo From: Alice Date: 05 May 07 - 02:58 PM weelittledrummer, it is a MEXICAN holiday, and it is "Cinco de Mayo", May 5th. Cinco means five and Mayo is the month of May. People in the US celebrate it as a reason to drink Mexican beer like Corona or Dos Equis and Margaritas and eat guacamole and tortilla chips. In other words, it is used for marketing products because it is a holiday like Saint Patrick's Day or Valentines Day.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinqo de Mayo From: Alice Date: 05 May 07 - 03:08 PM Cinco de Mayo is celebrated mostly in Puebla, Mexico (one of my favorite spots, a beautiful city of tile makers and potters if you ever get a chance to visit). Here is the history of cinco de Mayo Click here Alice |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinqo de Mayo From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 05 May 07 - 06:05 PM For those who prefer more reliable information than is found in Wackipedia: http://clnet.ucla.edu/cinco.html Cinco de Mayo French troops were defeated at Batalla de Puebla by General Ignacio Zaragoza and 5000 Mestizo and Zapoted Indians (the British and Spanish had withdrawn but the French had stayed. Napoleon III installed Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico. From Texas to New Mexico to California and in the barrios of major American cities, people of Mexican descent celebrate this day; a day of pride. It should be celebrated by all Americans; Napoleon had hopes of counteracting the Monroe Doctrine and American growth with a strong, European-controlled Mexico. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinqo de Mayo From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 06 May 07 - 08:18 AM I asked the bartender at a bar-restaurant where we eat, what the big deal was about Cinco de Mayo. He said most of the customers have no idea what the day is, but are happy to have another reason for getting drunk. They confuse it with lettuce de mayo. Jerry |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinco de Mayo From: Azizi Date: 06 May 09 - 01:37 PM Riginslinger, not only is your comment stupid, it's also racist. And the only reason why I'm commenting about it is that I don't want any guests wondering why no member of this forum identified your comment for what it is. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinco de Mayo From: gnu Date: 06 May 09 - 02:27 PM Oh, I think a few did... kat first. Now, back to the thread... Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery on May 5th in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko De Mayo. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinco de Mayo From: Azizi Date: 09 May 09 - 10:01 AM I just discovered this blog http://www.racialicious.com/ and want to share its post on Cinco De Mayo: A FRIENDLY REMINDER ABOUT CINCO DE MAYO By Special Correspondent Arturo R. García; 5/5/2009 http://www.racialicious.com/2009/05/05/a-friendly-reminder-about-cinco-de-mayo/#more-2420 ** Here's an excerpt from that particular blog post (I found the entire article as well as the readers' comments to that post to be interesting reading). 1. This is not Mexican Independence Day Nope, that's September 16th. 5/5 commemorates an unlikely Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The battle delayed, but did not stop, an eventual French occupation of the country, which lasted three years before it was toppled. 2. This is not that big of a deal back home Don't let the beer ads fool you; 5/5 is a regional holiday, usually celebrated at the site of the battle. But, it's nowhere near as big a deal as it is in El Otro Lado. Now, is that because of immigrant pride, or American corporate opportunism? That, I leave for you to decide. During my time working in local Spanish-language radio, the biggest sponsors for our Cinco de Mayo concerts were — you guessed it — beer companies. Banners everywhere, beer girls hawking their wares on the stage, booze selling like hot cakes in the fenced-off drinking area. I don't doubt that at least some of the people who attended the events had their hearts in the right place, but the commercial aspect definitely got on my nerves when I thought about it. 3. 'Celebration' does not equal acceptance Sure, people around the country will don their fakest sombreros and sing Ricky Martin at karaoke bars — because all Latinos are from Mexico, right? — but the furor over the H1N1 virus revealed examples of how we're still Others here, no matter the method of emigration.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Cinco de Mayo From: gnu Date: 09 May 09 - 11:30 AM Well, Rig, I suppose you are technically correct, but, if so, that may indicate that your grammar is technically incorrect. I am sure you meant that it would be nice for the Mexicans themselves to be able to get back to their homeland and culture to be able to enjoy the day and also that some people interpreted your post in a manner you did not intend. However, rather than speculate on the crux of your biscuit, I think I'll just walk away and leave you to your own specs. See yas.... have fun. |
