Subject: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Herga Kitty Date: 20 May 07 - 12:01 PM Mars have rethought their decision to put rennet into Mars bars, after getting 6,000 complaints - http://uk.news.yahoo.com/skynews/20070520/tuk-vegetarians-win-battle-of-the-mars-b-45dbed5.html |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: GUEST Date: 20 May 07 - 02:30 PM The rennet would have rendered them non-kosher. SOL |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 20 May 07 - 02:41 PM It isn't clear why they decided to include animal products. The vegetarian alternative is more expensive and this could possibly be the reason. |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 07 - 03:19 PM I had not heard of this over here and cannot find any info which says whether the same candies in the US have rennet or not. Thanks for the heads up, though. I intend to find out! |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: danensis Date: 20 May 07 - 03:50 PM Isn't it a bit hypocritical to complain about Mars bars because they might have had rennet used in their production, and not worry about the male calves slaughtered as a by-product of the dairy industry? John |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Andy Jackson Date: 20 May 07 - 04:43 PM Not to mention juicy steaks and chicken pis and roast beef of old England!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 07 - 05:17 PM Who is to say we haven't protested the practice of producing veal? Being a vegetarian usually means one is against such and, in my case, has involved protests, too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Rapparee Date: 20 May 07 - 05:25 PM Why would they do that? Put rennet in the candy, I mean. |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 20 May 07 - 06:10 PM Killing make calves as part of modern milk production is a separate matter from veal production as such. They still kill the calves even if they just use the bodies for pet food. |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: bobad Date: 20 May 07 - 06:26 PM "Why would they do that? Put rennet in the candy, I mean." Rennet, a chemical sourced from calves' stomachs, is used in the production of whey. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6653175.stm |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Rapparee Date: 20 May 07 - 06:28 PM Seems silly to me, when they've gotten along without it all this time, to add it and offend a whole segment of the market. No, not silly. Stupid. |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 07 - 06:34 PM Thanks for the clarification, McGrath, it is all against my beliefs and I do not support it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 20 May 07 - 06:34 PM They've got a lot of publicity from it! |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 May 07 - 08:24 PM Dunno about current North American sales, but a few years back I often snacked on Mars bars (among others) in the States. In Canada, they were quite different, even a different color. I was told that they were catering to local tastes. No idea what they were like in the UK. Now I understand that they have been discontinued in the States, and Mars Dark is sold in Canada (UK derivative). Australia has a different set of bars. In any case, composition varies from factory to factory. Veggie Mars bars? They all use milk, don't they? |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 20 May 07 - 08:41 PM "Australia has a different set of bars." ..designed to keep people out, not in... During Expo 88, we had Toblerone in not only the normal, but Dark and White as well. Can't find them anywhere now - I loved the dark more than the normal, and have a friend who likes all types of 'white'... |

Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Backwoodsman Date: 21 May 07 - 08:18 AM "Veggie Mars bars? They all use milk, don't they?" Why would that stop them being veggie? Many who describe themselves as veggies consume animal products, provided that procurement doesn't involve the death of an animal - milk, and veggie cheese (which doesn't contain rennet) being examples......... |
Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 21 May 07 - 08:22 AM There's 'Veggie' and 'Vegan'. |

Subject: RE: BS: Veggie Mars bars From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 May 07 - 02:34 PM Whey, hey, blow the man down! I give the true explanation of that phrase in thread 8686, 21 May: Blow the Man Down Whey is a 'nasty'? "The watery part of milk that is separable from the coagulable part of curd, esp. in the process of making cheese and that is rich in lactose, minerals and vitamins and contains lactalbumin and traces of fat." Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Sounds like a 'goodie' to me. (and the fat is not trans-fat) (and maybe it came from 'Contented Cows') |
