Sadly tonight we saw a return of Liverpool fans wreaking havoc in Europe. Riot police had to deal with the situation. This club has a history of such behaviour.

See BBC news on line for full story.

I'm not a Reds fan but I do admire the team and their manager and was really hoping they'd pull this one off against Milan for a second time. The reality was somewhat different from the pre-match build-up though and Liverpool huffed and puffed with little to show for their efforts in the first half. I think Crouch should have come on a lot earlier,or even been in the starting line-up - he may not be what is thought of as an 'orthodox' striker but he doesn't half cause panic in the defence and had netted a few as well. Still, what do I know - I'm a Leeds fan....

Liverpool simply had rotten luck. They played the Italians off the park. The Italians got a fluke goal before half time and a breakaway goal when the Liverpool defence was knackered. It makes football exciting that the poorer side always has a chance to win. It is just a shame that a performance as piss poor as the Italians put up last night sometimes gets rewarded. Fortunately, it does not happen too often and I can't see this sort of fluke happening too often again in the near future.

Problems with Liverpool fans? There is nothing on the italians newspapers today. I would think that nothing very bad happened.

Last I heard, Liverpool fans were righteously angry that they'd spent a fortune on travel and legit tickets, only to find that stadium admission had been completely screwed up, people with fake tickets had got in first, and they weren't allowed in. And when they got angry (as you would do when you've spent several hundred quid each for tickets, travel and hotels), the police went in with batons.

And yes, from the Italian PoV nothing happened - by their standards that was a tiny scuffle. No-one was killed by Italian fans, or maimed for life by Italian police, this time.

Graham.

They seem to have problems with anger management, those Liverpool fans. Remind me, Graham - What were they angry about at Heysel?

Some disparate points

We constantly heard about the shortage of tickets. Of the 17,000 allocated to Liverpool - 11,000 only were allocated to "regular" fans - the rest were appropriated by the club for distribution to its staff, players, ex-players, corporates, sponsors etc. In other words the club took about one third of its ticket allocation for itself, not far off what UEFA took for itself and about which Liverpool FC moaned loud and long.

Liverpool will make a lot of money from getting to the final. That money comes from the advertisers and TV people who in turn get the tickets from UEFA. There could be more tickets available if there was less money available - ask the American owners of Liverpool if they would take a cut in income so fans could get more tickets.

Were there thousands of ticketless Milan fans turning up in Athens? Nope - so why did ticketless Liverpool fans turn up? Because somehow they figured they might get in.

Anyone care to take a bet on where the "fake" tickets were printed?

Grab - I was only saying that if something really bad had happened, the "popular" press here would be screaming and whining on how horrible the British fans are, in order to forget how bad Italian fans can behave (let alone the police). Are you sure that is not the press in England that is exagerating the matter? (And anyway - as Mr Fox say, on killing each other's football fans I think that you won for a good 36 points.....)

I thought it was a good entertaining game - Unlike th ecrap we had to put up with last Saturday. The first goal was a lucky fluke. Liverpools goal could have been offside. I suppose the two cancel each other out. Milans second was a classic piece of opportunism and no-one should take that away from them.

I felt sorry for the genuine Liverpool ticket holders as well at first but, as has been pointed out, it was other Liverpool fans who kept them out - no-one else. They need to look at their own procedures first.

The sadest though was the ones left stranded at John Lennon airport because the plane had technical problems. Considering the result and the fact that they may not have got in anyway makes me think they may have been lucky after all.

Cheers

Dave

In his Guardian profile Steven Gerrard says the thing he sees as the biggest drag in soccer is "Diving players. He jumps off jhis sofa when he sees someone do it".

That'll be a different Steven Gerrard that dived at Sheffield United in the first game of the last Premiership season.
