Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blues (My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me) From: Helen Date: 15 Mar 20 - 04:09 PM Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band is a part of the personal history of a lot of people my age. They used to do courtyard concerts and dances at our university when I was there in the early '70's. I also remember their May Day dances at the town hall. Brothers Mic and Jim Conway co-founded the band. They were all brilliant. High energy, clever musicians, funny, creative. Memorable. (May Day is a workers' day celebrating the introduction of the 8 hour day but in NSW we have the Labour Day public holiday in early October.) Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me |

Subject: Lyr Add: BLUES (MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Oct 07 - 07:20 AM Here are the original lyrics, from the sheet music at The Archive of Popular American Music at UCLA: BLUES (MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME) Arthur N. Swanstone, Charles R. McCarron, & Carey Morgan New York: Jos. W. Stern & Co., © 1919. VERSE 1. What is that song about kisses? What is that song about smiles? If I could have my way, I'd sing a song today That would beat them all by miles. I wouldn't sing about smiling. That's not the title I'd choose. I would sing about what I've got, and what I've got's the weary blues. CHORUS 1: There are blues that you get from worry, There are blues that you get from pain, And there are blues when you're lonely, For your one and only, The blues you can never explain. There are blues that you get from longing, But the bluest blues that can be Are the sort of blues that's on my mind. They're the very meanest kind, The blues my naughty sweetie gives to me. VERSE 2. No use in chasing those rainbows. Rainbows will never help you. They look so bright and gay, but they will fade away, Then you'll find the sky's all blue. Look at the ocean and that's blue. My sweetie's eyes are blue too. When she got me, she blew away, and natur'ly that makes me blue. CHORUS 2: There are blues that you get when single. Those are blues that will give you pain, And there are blues when you're lonely, For your one and only, The blues you can never explain. There are blues that you get from longing To hold someone on your knee, But the kind of blues that always stabs, Comes from hiring taxicabs, The blues my naughty sweetie gives to me. CHORUS 3: There are blues that you get from sweetie When she phones to another guy, And there are blues when your honey Spends all of your money And blues when she tells you a lie. There are blues that you get when married, Wishing that you could be free. But the kind of blues that's good and blue Comes from buying wine for two, The kind of blues my sweetie gives to me. |

BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME Em There are blues that you get from loneliness Am And there are blues that you get from pain. B7 And there are blues when you are lonely Em For your one and only F# B7 Blues you can never explain. Em I said there are blues that you get from sleepless nights, Am Oh, but the meanest blues that I've seen: E E7 They're the blues that I've got on my mind, A A7 A I mean the very meanest kind, D7 G Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me. Fret: 3 2 1 Open Single string rundown on 6th string: G F# F E last note into Em Chord Rundown matches 1st three words. Also, nice effect if each chord in the next 6 lines is hit as one single stroke as the words are sung. Seventh line continue normal strumming. 3 2 1 Em Well there are blues you get from women Em When you see 'em going swimming Em Em And you haven't got a bathing suit yourself. Am There are blues you get much quicker Am When you're drinking lots of liquor, Am Am And somebody goes and takes it off the shelf. B7 And there are blues you get when everything's in hock, Em When your sweetie doesn't answer when you knock, F# And there are blues you get from getting In a taxicab and fretting B7 Every time you feel the bumper jump a clock. I went to the Jugband Rag site and got the words to this but the chords don't all fit the tune as I know it from Kweskin's recordings. The first part is ok but it falls apart after a while. Does anyone have a better set of chords? (I'm still working on it but haven't got it yet). Here's what was at the Jugband Rag site. BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME Suggested tablature: There are blues that you get from loneliness And there are blues that you get from sleepless nights, There are blues you get from women when you see 'em going swimming and you haven't got a bathing suit yourself. And there are blues you get from trying to keep your Uncle Bill from dying, and he afterwards forgets you in his will.
