Siglufjör? Folk Festival
On their return to Iceland Funi will be performing and leading workshops at the Siglufjör? Folk Festival in the north of Iceland from 4th - 7th July.

For those wanting to travel to Oxford, the programme starts at 8pm, admission is £5 (£3 concessions) and the address for the Port Mahon is 82 St. Clements St, Oxford, OX4 1AW. There is a frequent bus service from London that stops just yards from the venue and there is also a pay and display car park within easy walking distance. The venue is upstairs, hardly salubrious but the acoustics are good and the beer is (mainly Greene King) drinkable. The second half will feature a slide show as a back drop to the music.

And the Bristol gig, Saturday 16th June, will be extra-special value as Funi will be supported by a number of next-generation English-traditional-musician James':

James Raynard, who released the 2005 cd "Strange Histories"
James Delarre, alpha fiddler from Mawkin, (cd "The Fair Essex" 2006) and from Jim Moray's band

and James Moray himself. (cds "Sweet England" 2003 and "Jim Moray" 2006)

Looking forward to seeing Chris sing here for the first time in ages.

Congratulations to two of the finest players on the scene, I'm dead chuffed for them.

BTW, did you know that the J in Peter J Standing is a James? Well actually it isn't but I'm enough of a tart to use any excuse to play music!

Well what a cracking night. Apparently Oxford was the only venue to offer the multi-media presentation which is a shame for although Bára has a beautiful voice (that seems to have no limit in how high it goes!), the pictures were really helpful in understanding the narrative, after all we had idea what she was singing!

Some interesting musical instruments to be heard and it was a delight to hear Chris playing guitar again - so sad that he is not better known. There was some good support, notably by local girl Su Jordan who accompanied herself on double bass - beautiful singing and some bold and interesting interpretations of traditional songs. I hope she makes many more trips to the club.

So, check out the tour details and try and catch Chris and Bára where you can - it will be different to your usual night out at a folk club, but not one to be missed.

Pete, glad you enjoyed Su's performance - she is of course part of the extraordinary Oxford band Inflatable Buddha (and a number of other outfits) but some of just love to hear her singing solo!

Saw Chris (and Bara) at Oxford and it was a great evening. Best £5 I've spent on a gig for a long time. If you're anywhere near Southport get along to see him.

Hey, I was at the Port Mahon too!
Fantastic gig, and it cost me not a thing:

(a) because I carried in most of the gear in and
(b) Mr Standing remembered that he owed me a pint.

Fidla, kantele, langspil and, of course, the Fylde.
Singing in Icelandic parallel fifths and Chris doing Lord Bateman, something I hadn't heard him do for decades.
And a first sing out of Leon Rosselson's The Olive Tree.
Plus a gloriously shambolic Powerpoint presentation which nevertheless illustrated the songs and complemented Bára's very personal explanations.
Like how Funi means 'fire' in Icelandic and it was also the name of Bára's grandfather's favourite horse. Her grandmother wrote the words of the poem upon which the song (and band name) is based.
Can't wait till they're back again.

Yes, it was a fascinating evening. Huge thanks to Pete for putting this on. It would have been good to have put a face to name Diane, see you at their return gig and I'll buy you a pint! I bow to your knowledge of the instuments, the only one I recognised was the Fylde Aerial which I lusted after many years ago but couldn't afford. This evening deserved a bigger audience. Might make folk clubs a more regular feature of my diary after a few years absence.
