Subject: RE: BS: Blair Atholl From: Rog Peek Date: 22 Jun 07 - 06:41 PM Maybe it's just a misunderstanding like this: Walking through Chinatown, a tourist is fascinated with all the Chinese restaurants, shops, signs and banners. He turns a corner and sees a building with the sign, "Saul Dumbrowski's Chinese Laundry." "Saul Dumbrowski?" he muses. "How the heck does that fit in here?" So he walks into the shop and sees an old Chinese gentleman behind the counter. The tourist asks, "How did this place get a name like "Saul Dumbrowski's Chinese Laundry?" The old man answers, "Is name of owner." The tourist asks, "Well, who and where is the owner?" "Me, is right here," replies the old man. "You? How did you ever get a name like Saul Dumbrowski?" "Is simple," says the old man. "Many, many year ago when come to this country, was stand in line at Ellis Island Documentation Center. Man in front is Jewish gentleman from Poland. Lady look at him and go, 'What your name?' He say, 'Saul Dumbrowski.' Then she look at me and go, 'What your name?' I say, My name Sem Ting. |

I was not able to establish a familial connnection between the folks listed below and the famous Nanking allergist, Dr. Ah Chew. 1. ... Ah Ching 1919 2. A. Ching China 1895 50 View View View 3. Subject: RE: BS: Blair Atholl From: An Buachaill Caol Dubh Date: 25 Jun 07 - 12:55 PM Just a lateral thought. When John McCormack was doing a tour in Japan, 1930s, he heard one of his own records ("The Rose of Tralee") being played in a music shop; but it was being played much too fast; old gramophones didn't have fixed speeds, like the later 78,45,33 RPM ones. Anyway, he went into the shop to put them right. "No, no, Sir, this is famous Irish Singer, John Comic" he was told. "I AM John Comic, and that bloody thing's too fast". When you think about it, there's a certain similarity between some Oriental styles of singing and a speeded-up version of the Tenor voice. |
Subject: RE: BS: Blair Atholl From: Teribus Date: 26 Jun 07 - 12:33 AM Thanks for the correction DannyC. In researching the song "Isle of Tears" before recording it, we turned up that there were three reasons for refusal of entry: - Mentally ill - Liable to become a burden to the state - being Chinese But it was all a while ago. The other anomaly was that in the last verse BG wrote - "When they closed down Ellis Island in nineteen forty-three" - Ellis Island closed much later, 12th November 1954. While the first person to land was 15 year old Annie Moore the last was a guy called Arne Pettersen, a Norwegian Merchant Seaman. |
Subject: RE: BS: Blair Atholl From: DannyC Date: 26 Jun 07 - 10:19 AM No prob Teribus. I was unaware of the entry guidelines myself. Thanks for relating them. Those Ellis Island on-line resources are an impressive archive to a dabbler such as myself. I was able to find some interesting tidbits about my own family on there. You might be relieved to know that I will not relate them to you here. By the way, I believe the correct spelling of allergist's name was actually Dr. Ah Chu. ** bah boom cha ** |
