from the clicky:

"The ministry also announced the price would be raised by more than 20 percent to $.11 per liter ($.42 a gallon)."

They are talking about gasoline...

Remember when a 'good' wage in the US was $1.60 an hour? At that point our gasoline cost less than 50 cents a gallon.

Perspective...

In the days of the $5-10K/year salary gasoline was .25-.35/gallon.

I once bought gas for 17.9...in about 1971. It was on sale for 15.9 for one day in the south part of town, but I didn't drive down to see.

Hey...maybe Iran can develop nuclear powered vehicles to offset those outrageous gas prices!

When I was 15 years old, back in the summer of 1972, I used to work from 11PM to 8AM, seven days a week for $1.40 Canuck per hour ($0.05 extra an hour for night shift). Gas was about $0.10 per litre. University tution, in my first year, was $810. Glad I ain't a kid no more.

$.42 per gallon x 55 gallons = $23.1 per barrel for GASOLINE.

And I thought it was refined from that fungible stuff, oil.

Lucky you don't live in the UK, we're currently paying the equivalent of $1.00 per litre on average. People here tend to buy a monetary amount (eg £20) rather than by the litre. We don't have gallons anymore thanks to Europe.

sadly, way too many in the US have LONG commutes in way too large vehicles. And going to Grandma's house for a visit can be a 3-4 hour to 2 day drive. Driving across the US from, say, California to Wah.DC is a 4 day trip....and many of our trucks must do trips like this constantly.

It is TIME for very, very serious alternative fuel source research.

Sorry, just realised I meant to say $2.00 per litre. Perhaps it was wishfull thinking.

Bubblyrat, strangely enough I always try to work out my car's fuel consumption in miles per gallon. Kilometres per litre means nothing to my ancient brain cell. There again, how many of today's youngsters know how many gnats cocks there are to .01 of an inch?

More like $2, 95p at the local pump, say $7.50 a US gallon.

Perhaps the day will come when the car is regarded in much the same way that cigarettes are now..They pollute other peoples air, the do great harm to the planet and for the most part, have more to do with personal convience that with necessity. I am not anti car but I am convinced that we must stop moaning about the cost of petrol and start driving less.

My question is - they say the gasoline is **imported**; and they are selling it for $ .42 per gallon.

So how come they can get gas that sells for $ .42 and the rest of the world is paying $3 to $4 per gallon even for domestically refined? Huh? it don't make sense.

I don't know how it is in Queensland Foolestroupe, but $1.25 is only one of the many prices we see here in Sydney. It all depends what day of the week you are looking. Every Wednesday the garages bump the price up about 15 cents a litre to somewhere between $1.34 and $1.40 a litre (it was even more a few weeks ago), and over the next week the price gradually works its way down to somewhere in the low $1.20s - you can see the queues out into the road every Tuesday night!

This week it actually dropped to $1.19 a litre in some places on Tuesday, but the next day it was back at $1.34 again. This cycle repeats every week. I always try to buy my petrol on Tuesday, and use a Woolworths or Coles docket to get more off the price. Even doing all that, it's a huge weekly expense!

well, I'd surmise that one Arab country 'might' give another a better deal than they do us. I'd not be terribly surprised if our prices were subsidizing Iran's....and not much we can do about it right now.

What did you expect when you put an oil man in the White House?

His solution?> More drilling on the east coast. That's the best his pea brain can come up with.

The least I ever paid for gas, without there being a 'gas war' was $.17 a gallon. This was in the mid60s in Lincoln City at the Oregon Coast. At that price though, the proprietor did nothing but pump gas, no windshields or checking the oil.

I enjoyed the man. He was a Texan, large and jovial and amply built. One time he flung back his arms and took a big lungful of the fresh ocean air and then said, Ah! If I'd done that in Texas I'd have smothered to death.
