Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: gnu Date: 02 Jul 07 - 06:50 PM The Queen is the head of state for 26 Commonwealth nations. The Queen and her relatives and close and distant friends and allies pretty much own the earth. Politics be damned. China and most of Asia are unto themselves, but, as at present, they pose little threat to the Queen's domination of the earth, economically or militarily. Oh, ah, before you mention the Spanish, let us not forget that Queen Isabella did not blink an eye when Beth smote the Argetines. (I want my Falkland Islands back.") Of course, when she tried to build a toll highway in New Brunswick, Canada, Beth again said, "Not bloody fucking likely on my land, bitch." I am paraphrasing, of course. Power? More than most people realize or could even imaginesty. And, she wears the crown well. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: Gurney Date: 03 Jul 07 - 01:17 AM She is head of the army, so if you don't want the lads in black balacalavas to bother you, be good. She, or her representative, can dissolve parliament. Happened in Oz, not long ago. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: GUEST,PMB Date: 03 Jul 07 - 03:24 AM The Queen has no powers until someone lets her have them. We don't have a written constitution, so what she can or can't do is a matter for the courts. But she has the power to appoint the Prime Minister (and theoretically other misnisters) and she is CinC of the army. So there is the potential for her to be used to legitimise a military coup, as happened in Greece in 1967. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: MMario Date: 03 Jul 07 - 10:15 AM They used the Queen to legitimise a miliatry coup in Greece? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: GUEST,PMB Date: 03 Jul 07 - 11:29 AM Silly boy. Ex-king Constantine of Greece of course, who also happens to be 410th in line for Lizzie's job. He said he only did it to fool the colonels. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: annamill Date: 03 Jul 07 - 05:22 PM There is a wonderful movie called "The Queen" that seems to give a pretty good idea of her life and powers. It revolves around the time of Di's death. It shows her reaction and responses. I don't know how factual it can be under the circumstances, but I get the feeling its pretty real. love, Annamill |
Subject: RE: BS: The Queen - what powers? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Jul 07 - 09:43 PM Successful military coups never seem to have much problem in legitimising themselves, they don't need to be rubber-stamped by royalty. (Approval by the White House did the job for Pinochet, for example, as it would have for the coup in Venezuela in 2002, if it hadn't come unstuck.) |
