Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: SINSULL Date: 03 Jul 07 - 10:27 AM Funny - I have the same problem. There are ads that I immediately turn off because they are annoying, loud, incredibly stupid, all of the above. But I can't seem to remember a single product involved. Too bad - I would like to boycott them. Have to admit, Geico is a real nuisance. Between that idiotic lizard and the caveman... |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Becca72 Date: 03 Jul 07 - 10:33 AM For me it's the "head on" commercials. The ones where they have people in the commercials saying how annoying the commercials are is even worse than the originals. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Jul 07 - 12:03 PM The one I loathe most is that stupid Barry Scott shouting at me to go and buy Cillit BANG! The one presently running has such a BAAAAD voiceover, it's incredible! LTS |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Don Firth Date: 03 Jul 07 - 12:48 PM I've seen several commercials lately, advertising different products, that concentrated so hard on some stupid gag that I never did figure out what product or service they were trying to peddle. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Bill D Date: 03 Jul 07 - 01:10 PM I'm so tired of seeing cars driving mountain roads at 90MPH or balanced on rocks in canyons....that.....never mind. I once knew a guy who actually worked for the Ad agency that did the old maudlin "Double your pleasure, double your FUN!" commercials for Wrigley's gum. He said the crew could barely stand doing it, but the president of Wrigley personally oversaw and helped plan those things. It would a lot easier to list the few funny, good commercials. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Big Al Whittle Date: 03 Jul 07 - 01:44 PM Most hated ...Picture Finance. This moron (sometimes a man, sometimes a woman) gets into debt over the phone to the tune of 25 grand, whilst the kids are jumping round and the spouse is rummaging mindlessly around. They will peobably get the money, put it somewhere, forget where it is, and contract another loan tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 03 Jul 07 - 01:52 PM I wish they WERE dumb ads! They come on at four times the volume of the program, and nigh on blow you out of your chair. I've become adept at hitting the mute button on the fly, and although I haven't a clue as to the best detergent, I DO get to watch some incredibly amusing short silent movies. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: cookster Date: 03 Jul 07 - 03:01 PM I hate the starburst commercial with the Gay guy asking two guys if they have Berrys and cream starburst and they tell him yes and e starts dancing around.GAY GAY GAY. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: RangerSteve Date: 03 Jul 07 - 07:27 PM Yeah, the berries and cream ad is bad. I don't get it. Who is that guy? Why is he dressed like that? Why is he singing? Why does he repeat it in falsetto? Starburst has made sure I'll never buy their product. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: saulgoldie Date: 03 Jul 07 - 07:50 PM I generally don't watch commercials. So I can't really comment on which is the dumbest. I have a good sense of timing, and when a commercial break starts, I switch to another channel and switch back when my "alarm" goes off and says that the show has started again. The Geico commercials are so ubiquitous that I have not been able to totally avoid them. But I sure as hell don't use their service. Did you know, BTW, that it happens to be pretty lousy insurance? S'probably why they have to advertise so much! Anyway, when I am not flipping channels, I tape my shows for later viewing and just fast-forward through the annoyances. All of this is why the advertisers are abandoning traditional media and trying to figure out how to "beat" these new trends. |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Peace Date: 03 Jul 07 - 08:21 PM Yeah. The thing was driving me nuts. I realized one day after a friend had told me how funny "The Seinfeld Show" was that I didn't find it funny. I watched two shows back to back. Laughed once in the first show and smirked twice in the second. I watched about ten minutes of "Friends" and that was it for that. The News wasn't, and I got really tired of talking heads letting me know what was important. Commercials I find are insulting and aimed at the intelligence and attention span of yer average turnip. So, the TV went. |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Mickey191 Date: 03 Jul 07 - 08:59 PM Most obnoxious currently is: A drill sargeant: Screaming at the top of his lungs that a guys uniform is stained. Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: RangerSteve Date: 03 Jul 07 - 11:54 PM Don - Andre Rieu is good for you and you are supposed to adore him because PBS said so. Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: GUEST,Scoville at Dad's Date: 04 Jul 07 - 12:36 AM There used to be one where some little kids brought their parents pancake breakfast in bed, and the dad starts to eat, but the mom whispers the warning in his ear that, "We don't have the stuff to make pancakes." Flour, milk, sugar, butter, baking powder, eggs. Who the Hell doesn't have the stuff to make pancakes?? * * * * * * On the up side, there used to be a discount clothing store chain here (Weiner's. Gee, I wonder why they went out of business) that ran an ad at the end of the summer every year that we thought was pretty clever. It showed kids on the beach and then started the "Jaws" theme. Kids start screaming and running, and the camera pans to a fleet of school buses driving towards them over the sand. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Jul 07 - 02:11 AM There are undoubtedly some very clever adverts, but mostly they're just dumb, or assume that the viewer is dumb. Certainly they assume they are deaf, otherwise there wouldn't be all that shouting about cleaning my toilet. I mean, other than student accomodation and building sites, who gets their toilet that dirty anyway? And if I want my toilet to smell of flowers, I'll put a vase of flowers in the window or better yet, open the window! The Advertising Standards Agency in the UK was approached in a bid to lower the volume of commercials shown... I wonder what happened to that idea? But the ones on UK TV that annoy me most of all are the series of Halifax Building Society adverts. No wonder I can never get served when I have to visit their office to complain about their latest extravagant charges for going £2.30 overdrawn.... all the bloody staff are out shooting commercials! And if I ever meet that Howard bloke, I'm going thump him so hard he'll be able to clean his glasses with his underpants. LTS |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 Jul 07 - 03:15 AM Its the sheer quantity of all the loan company adverts and the way they trivialise or attempt to make huge debts seem normal and acceptable that annoy me. I think they are as bad morally and as insidious as adverts for smoking. It would serve all these bastards right if the government wrote everybody's debts off, because these companies conned people into these financial messes. Al (not in debt, but been there) |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Michael Date: 04 Jul 07 - 07:00 AM I was stopped in town the other day by a rather bedraggled lady who asked me if I could spare a few minutes to do a market research survey: It was raining and the offer of a cup of coffee sounded tempting (and cheaper than a cafe). So I was sat at a laptop and watched some TV ads with the names removed, I'm pleased to report that I (honestly) couldn't identify any of them!! Mike |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: HuwG Date: 04 Jul 07 - 09:23 AM Ironically, it is usually the most evil products i.e. tobacco, which produced the best advertisements. I recall one which starred comedian Russ Abbott, after getting inspiration from a certain brand of cigar, using a home-made blunderbuss to blast ten clay pigeons in flight. The camera then cut to the operator of the clay pigeon trap ... Des O'Connor, who was loading the trap with CDs labelled "Russ Abbott's greatest hits". Another had no commentary, just stock footage of American steam locomotives of the 1930s in majestic progress, with a background soundtrack of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning". Of course I cannot remember either brand. Not only do I not smoke, but the advertisers failed to hammer the product name into my head with a nauseating discord and inane unrhyming lyrics. The demon drink now ... with certain exceptions, if it is advertised on the TV, I regard it as guaranteed to be utter swill. (Guinness is the one exception which springs readily to mind.) |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Liz the Squeak Date: 16 Jul 07 - 05:47 AM The juxtaposition of adverts is amusing too.... Last week, during afternoon TV, the first was an advert for Immodium, a diahorrea medicine, shortly followed by one for Senakot, a constipation medicine. Like crepes.. put some jam, or maple syrup and roll them up and eat.. you wont want to go to pancakes after that.. - the commercials that bug me - are ones where the power is out (an add for power generator) and some guy is singing and playing spoons to entertain his guests.. and a similar one which I think was about having cableor highspeed internet for kids whose parents sit around and play guitars.. (so the kids have something to do other than homemade entertainment) NOw youd think - that its far better to make your own music then relying on mindless tv or internet.. |

The neighbour puts on his kilt and picks up his bagpipes and starts playing. Father and son are muttering to each other that they really MUST get the internet on VERY soon. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Richard Bridge Date: 19 Jul 07 - 06:09 PM There are or have been some ads for some little Japanese jukebox cars (not sure which) that have WONDERFUL music soundtracks - one was a modern version of Billy Fury's "Wondrous Place" and there have been several others. One was so good I tried to trace the ad agents to find out what the track was - but they never replied. Someone is using the Classics IV classic track "Spooky" at present(ish) too. |

And how does it know that it's not the proper time to be used? |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Mr Red Date: 10 Jun 09 - 07:33 AM There was an article in the New Scientist last week about pundits but it applies to Adverts just as much. We believe people who state with conviction and don't haver. "Probably" and 60% is not yer average fare in ads. They lie all the time and need to be challenged. One ad for Lynx (man) perfume - that'a all it is whatever you call it - claimed that women don't like men who sweat. Now all the reports of scientific research I ever came across say just the opposite - traces of "man sweat" make park benches and T-shits etc preferred by most women. Now it the ad had said "women say they don't like man sweat" it might have been true, but it didn't. FWIW the same is true for woman sweat on men according to similar research. It is all about staleness and amount. |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: SharonA Date: 29 Jun 09 - 04:43 AM Hey, theman, I don't think you need to apologize. Billy Mays himself poked fun at his style of product-pitching. I'm sure he would have laughed if he had read the send-up that you and RangerSteve wrote, and he might even have acted it out on video. There are several clips on YouTube of him having fun with his image -- ordering food at a McDonald's drive-through; wreaking havoc in an office by misusing the products he pitched; parodying Shakespeare on Jay Leno's show, etc. He was a nice guy who didn't take himself too seriously... which may have been his downfall: he laughed off the blow to his head, joking about how hard it was, instead of seeking medical attention. RIP, Billy Mays -- you were loud, you were proud, and your smile was the biggest special bonus you offered. We'll miss you! |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: robomatic Date: 30 Jun 09 - 01:30 PM Some commercials are cleverer than others, and then there's the whole 'meta' commercial thing, being the manner and method of the commercial being displayed. I think GEICO is rather clever, they have at least three (no, make that four, no it's really five) major themes and they 'tend' not to overplay any one of them. 1) The GEICO gecko connection. The best of these were before the gecko had a voice, it was simply an appearance of the lizard, the most memorable being a shot of a dog looking out a car window, this was a really nice dog and clearly its attention was riveted as we found out by a lizard sitting on a convertible car seat next to it. 2) The testimonial of a normal person made obviously and with great fanfare by a genuine semi-celebrity (one time it was Joan Rivers). 3) A semi-dramatic event where one of the characters says out of the blue "I just saved a lot on my car insurance" 4) The "fine young cavemen" commercials. 5) The money-fold with big eyes that follows someone around who could be saving a lot of money on their car insurance. In fact, GEICO can't be that cheap because they're spending so bloody much on pretty good commercials. VOLKSWAGEN has generally good clever, not overdone commercials. I even like the "I'm a PC" commercials in response to the really well-done "I'm a MAC -and I'm a PC" commercials where the truly funny guy is an increasingly well known humorist playing of course the PC. The one's I can't stand. Anything with a talking baby or someone who shouts. Anything which tells you to talk to your doctor then follows this by an auctioneer's gabble of warning symptoms. |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 Sep 09 - 08:07 PM May have been mentioned before, but too much up above. The insurance commercial about the guy who has a 20-year-old car, and his insurance is also 20 years old. Anyone with any sense long ago cut back to accident and liability coverage, which works out about the same with all insurers, and dropped coverage on the car itself. The commercial also implies that the guy should get a new car, but if a vehicle is properly maintained and in good condition, the guy is well-ahead of the game. |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Bill D Date: 01 Sep 09 - 08:32 PM Tonight...guy with baseball glove, tossing ball to kid. Announcer says:"Many things get passed along from Father to Son....like Aqua-Velva shaving lotion!" Transition? Nawwwww... |
Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Joe_F Date: 01 Sep 09 - 08:50 PM Surely, it would be far more efficient to have a thread for *sensible* commercials on TV. |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: theman Date: 01 Sep 09 - 09:36 PM The Purex 3-in-1 dryer sheets commercial. It stars this red headed woman who talks about the wonderful things this dryer sheet does. At the end she says "now if it could just fold." She says this as she has the deer in the headlights look. |

What a good idea Joe F. It would be the fastest slide off the list in the history of Mudcat, with NO posts whatever. Pity it's not THAT easy to get rid of the ads themselves. Don T. |

Subject: RE: Dumb commercials on TV From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Sep 09 - 08:36 PM There is a very easy way to get rid of the ads themselves. Rip the guts out of your television and turn it into a plantholder or just drop it off a high place and watch it go "BOOM". Do the same with your radio...or just tune it to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada's national radio show which is publicly financed and thus HAS no commercials. Problem solved. |
