Here is a technique, I use occassionally in jigs and reels. uillean pipers cran on D and Enotes,when I cran a dotted crotchet in jig time,I cut the D Three times,.aDgDeD example first bar of BlarneyPilgrim .
A good reel is Within a mile ofDublin,first bar,I use first finger[right]for Anote,second finger right for D note,first finger left G note, second finger left Enote.

cranning seems to be something like a roll#

Must admit I too thought from the title as entered that the thread was about a make of concertina, but am now intrigued ... it may be a technique, but what exactly is cranning please Captain??

A cran is a roll to imitate pipes or whistle. For E you would play EaEdE (I think) or you would if you could.

thats right Diane,crans vary from piper to piper,however there is a slight difference from a roll,rolls generally have the first note lengthened,so the rhythmic emphasis is different,crans can also be six notes for E you might play bEaEdE or aEfshEdE.
the whole point about the English Concertina,is that it is easiest,to do your cut notes on the opposite side,to the main note.Dick Miles
