I have never had a kitty "get lost". Mine seem to know where home is no matter how far they roam. Of course, I don't allow them outside until they are settled in with butter on their feet - Nana Sullivan's folklore. Put butter on a cat's paws and it will always come home for more. And I never take mine away from home except for trips to the vet.

Put butter on catspaw's? NOT AN EXPERIMENT TO TRY AT HOME.

Look, face it. Cats are NEVER lost. They may not be where YOU think they should be, but they are where THEY think they should be. Just ask one.

Maybe not GPS systems, but they are putting chips in some cats for identification purposes (or is that purr-pusses?) these days, the same as they do for some dogs. Supposedly it helps reunite lost or stolen pets with their owners, and it's certainly better than trusting that a pet (particularly a cat) will keep its collar and ID tag on when it's roaming around, lost. I'm sure the chip method works when the facilities to which the lost pets are taken have the scanning equipment. But I can't help wondering how the more cash-strapped shelters can afford to get that equipment..? Through grants and donations, I guess. I'm guessing that it'll be a while before the technology becomes commonplace.

It's not just the shelters, most vets have them (and are more able to afford them than shelters) Shelters usually have a good working relationship with at least one vet.

It's already more common than you might think. All my dogs are chipped, but I can't really see doing the cats, not yet anyway. Rattlesnake vacc. for the dogs is ahead of that.

(and if there is a rattlesnake vacc for dogs is there one for humans?)

The microchips certainly are a boon if you live in an area with lots of ethnic restaurants and a history of missing cats...

It really happened not a million miles from where I'm sitting right now...

Sheesh, usually Mudcat is ahead of the times. This is one of the few times it seems to be a little behind **bg**:GPS pet tracking.

I just recently saw a related story in the news. When I went to find it online just now, I saw there were several such incidents reported. Here's one:

The cat came back

Both our cats from the SPCA are 'chipped.' No choice.

The process, however, seems to be rather painful, leaving them
in a bit of a state.

I would like to know more about "illegal flyposting." Is this done on houseflies, horseflies, blackflies, or pantsflies? I know a guy who had a friend's fishing fly get caught in his fly during the backcast, but it was more embarrassing than illegal since they both had licenses.

My two regularly travel about a hundred miles (about 2 hours) in the car from one place to another - mine, and the place where they were born, and their mother still lives.

They accept both 'homes' very well. They also now travel very well, sleeping mostly - with just a few 'calls for attention' - they cuddle up to each other on the way.

That reminds me of a story I once heard. Seems there was this fellow, and his wife had a cat. Well, this guy hated the cat so much that one day, when his wife was out shopping, he grabbed the cat and put it in his car. He then drove WAAAAAY out into the wilderness, and threw the cat out of the car.

When he got home that afternoon, he was shocked to see the little kitty waiting at his front door. He couldn't figure out how it had gotten home.

The next morning, after his wife had gone out on an errand, he grabbed the cat again, and this time drove even further out into the wilderness. He threw the cat out, and sped away homeward. He was astonished to see the cat, waiting at the front door, again!

The next day, the man was doubly determined to rid himself of this cat. He grabbed the cat and drove for HOURS through dangerous back roads and into the deepest woods he could find. Then, he tossed the cat out, and sped away.

Unfortunately, the man had driven so far down the back roads, that he had lost his way. He drove around for hours trying to figure out where he was, and how to get home. Finally, he got out of his car, climbed a tree (in order to get a better signal for his cell phone, of course!), and called his house. His wife answered the phone, and he asked her if the cat was there. She replied that, of course the cat was there. He had been home all afternoon.

"Put that little bastard on the phone", the man demanded, "I need to get directions from him..."

My last cat did get lost, as a five month old kitten. I left him with a dogperson friend, who unthinkingly let him out in strange territory. I was frantic for five days, at which point my devastated friend triumphantly appeared with kitty in hand. Kitty had walked five km. up the road to a local annual music event. He was discovered by the partiers trying to enter every truck on the property (he was used to driving in our truck). As he was covered with burrs and fleas, the hosts kindly took him in, de-burred and de-fleaed him, and set about finding his owner. In short order, my friend got the news and made the recovery.
