But, seriously, well done. It's always a good feeling to win through.

I'm confused. Homeless world cup? Where do they get the bread to go to away matches? Beg for it? And, do they come back again, and if so, why? Who goes to watch them, and do they pay to get in? How?
Why would anyone organise a homeless world cup, unless they want more homeless bumming around their home town. If they want more homeless, why?

I'm full of questions.

Or is it just about clubs with no home ground, as Wolverhampton Wanderers were once? (that's why they're called 'Wanderers').

"typical English, they can't say well done Scotland can they"

Arran - what does my first post say?

Yes, I included a bit of flippancy, but the congratulations were genuinely meant. I always like to see any of the home nations doing well at anything.

Out of interest, was the contest organised by the Big Issue, or some similar organisation?

I wasn't talking about you Bainbo, I'm glad that you said that in your first post, but then go to Gurney's post a read that, they never said great for Scotland have they.

I'm sorry but it is true some English twits, just can't say great for Scotland, I mean if England had won I would great for England.

I'm sorry Bainbo but as I said I'm not talking about you, I talking about some of the English twits.

But I'd still be interested to know who organised the contest. And were any of the other home nations involved?

this is the page about the homeless world cup

Homeless World Cup
25/07/2007

Scotland's team for the 5th Homeless World Cup fly out to Denmark today with £10,000 of help from the Government.

Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell said:

"Tackling homelessness is essential in our drive to fight poverty and inequality in Scotland. This Government is committed to addressing the blight of homelessness and the exclusion homeless people face.

"The team's participation in the Homeless World Cup helps raise awareness, not only of the difficulties that confront homeless people, but how people can come together to tackle these social issues.

"Successful Scots on the world sporting stage help to inspire and enrich the nation and I am sure that our team will do the country proud."

Mel Young, Founder, Homeless World Cup, said:

"This is excellent support from the Scottish Executive for Scotland's Homeless World Cup squad. Just the boost the team needs as they travel to meet 48 nations in the Copenhagen 2007 Championship.

"As an international organisation the Homeless World Cup is beginning to see an increase in the number of governments around the world understanding and supporting the tremendous power of football to change lives, to change the world. It is superb to see the Scottish Executive and Scotland as part of this global group moving forwards."

The Homeless World Cup unites teams of homeless people from around the globe through the positive power of sport. It aims to generate self-confidence, a feeling of belonging and enhanced self esteem.

The Homeless World Cup takes place in Copenhagen between July 29 and August 4.

The 2005 World Cup was held in Edinburgh. Last year it was in Cape Town, South Africa.

There are all sorts of homeless people, I think. Who decides if a person is homeless? And, do they differentiate between gypsies/didicois/travellers and the sort of people who live in cardboard boxes in the city centre? People who bum off friends and relations? Professional footballers and other athletes between clubs? Runaway children who doss under bridges?
Do the teams get tested for dope, like other athletes do?

I've been giving it a little thought, mostly because the sheer unliklihood took me by surprise. I can understand paraplegic games, and very exciting they are, too, but a sub-group who either make a lifestyle choice or have it thrust on them, or choose to run away from an untenable situation? How can you make that a level playing field?

It occurs to me that this may be jack-up by someone who wants to create an organisation that gives them a chance to suck on the public teat, as we say here. Working, too, isn't it?

You can call me cynical if you like, but I try not to be stupid. That money would be better spent teaching them skills, finding them housing, giving them psychiatric aid, or setting them up in businesses. Even professional footballers sometimes have trouble adjusting to life after retirement(at about 35) so what chance have these people got!

still can't say great Scotland won can you it seems to stick in your throat, I mean who cares if they're homeless or not, I mean at lest these other people have houses and big fancy cars and other things that we people can only dream about.

as I said if it was England had won the homeless world cup I would be saying that's great, but what is the use argueing with you, anyway because you don't listen or what to listen

Arran, you seem to be working under the misconception that I'm English. I was, 30 years ago, but I've been Kiwi since, and my best friend is from Glasgow, and my brother-in-law lives there, so I've no axe to grind on that score.

On your other point, I care not a toss if somone prefers to be of no fixed abode, that is OK by me. I was on friendly terms with travellers in my youth, contracting to them on occasion. However, if the homeless 'beg' in a threatening manner, shit in someone's doorway, or leave their rubbish for someone else to remove, then it is my concern, as it should be the concern of everyone in a society, even when it is in another country. There should be no need for that in any society.

As a taxpayer and ratepayer, I do also hope that the huge lumps of money that are extracted from me is well spent, including that which goes on social welfare. To help someone who is on their uppers is OK, but the sort of thing being discussed is frivolity, not helping anyone. Except possibly the organisers, as I inferred before.

I wrote 'sub-group', not sub-species.

I'm a tax payer and rate payer the same as you but as I said I just don't want to argue with you and I'm sorry calling you English, but some of the Aussies and New Zealanders call me English or even Irish.

But as I said I don't want to argue with you because I'm a tax payer and rate payer the same as you, but I feel great that Country won the homeless world cup.
that's all I have to say on the matter

Goodbye

Arran, the custom and practice on this site seems to be to speak your mind, but do it politely. This seems fair enough to me -I've been doing it all my life- and that is what I was doing. That you considered the topic of the thread admirable and that I considered it incongruous is not grounds for animosity, but rather grounds for discussion and exchange of opinion. Most of the more regular posters to the site seem to take that stance.
If you do need advice of any kind, you will certainly find some here, subject no object. I've both benefitted and contributed myself, and expect to do so again.    Chris.

Yes, Well Done the Scottish Team!!

The best comment I have read about the whole thing was the suggestion that when the team return to Scotland they do a tour of the major sports venues and football games in Scotland with their World Cup Trophy. I only hope that if they do, they get a percentage of the gate and the television fees. Who knows maybe it would be enough to give every person in the squad a fresh start.

I did a gig at a hostel for homeless people about ten or twelve years ago. It was a sort of a halfway house, for people, who were trying to get back on the ladder of having an address, work etc. I talked to one of the organisers and asked him how many homeless people made it back into society. He told me it was about one in ten. I have only ever been homeless for brief periods, so I can't imagine what it feels like to fall off the ladder completely. I do not want to have too many hard opinions on the subject. I am leaning to the view that it is actually an acute form of mental illness, which very few people really know how to cope with.
From what I have read and heard about this tournament, it can do nothing but good.
