SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 ***NEW DATE***

at SINSULL's
         4PM start
$10 per lobster + buffet and beverages. You must of course sing for your supper.
None crustacean eaters can make do with whatever comes off the bar-b-que.

I will need a firm and fast head count for this one. Who's in? Who needs a bed?

I don't either, Deb. I usually have some steaks on hand as well as hamburgers and hot dogs. Kendall and Curmudgeon do the boiling - I can't even abide the smells never mind the screams of pain as they plunge the poor babies into boiling water.

It is with heavy heart that I must convey our regrets. This date coincides with another event, renamed Boylestock by Jeri, to which we have commited.

Also, there is no way in Hell that I would attempt to leave Maine on Labor Day. The sheer thought of being engulfed in the tidal wave of tourist traffic headed south on the Maine Turnpike, is almost more than I can even contemplate.

Still looking forward to seeing many of you at the Shanty Session and/or the Dave and Pamela concert -- Tom

I'll bring the lobster buckets to the Dave and Pamela concert, but I agree with Tom. Even if we weren't already committed to Boyle Fest, there's no way I'd consider heading south out of Maine on Labor Day. I don't like living in my car for hours and hours.

(I have fond memories of my days in Kennebunkport, sitting on the bridge in a lawnchair on Labor Day, toasting the departing tourists with the martinis in our Thermos.)

Really sorry to have to miss the Lobster Boil this year, though. Been looking forward to it since last year's.

It is worth attending just to see Kendall hypnotise the Lobster!! even though I couldn't take the smell and promptly retired to TJ Hookers and ate Reuben sandwiches and drank French Vanilla coffee(My Favourite) while the savages indulged themselves, I rejoined after the smell had dispersed. I realise that it was only a Mini-boil and not the full monty so to speak, I think there was only 6-8 lobsters eaten on the occassion, but the pile of debris was impressive, even so.

It is a Maine (or at least Morse) tradition to

1. Scare the dog with the live lobster
2. Put it to sleep before sending it to its death
3. Eat until your pants no longer fit

Micca, if there were only 6-8 lobsters eaten and my father was there, what did everyone else have for dinner?

Ten bucks per--- what a bargain! I'll be mighty pleased if we can find
anything like that in the Orono / Bangor area next week.

I was thinking of taking out a line of credit for supper, with what
I've heard about the the lobster 'shortage' situation.

$10.... say now... what we talking? Markets, selects??? I saw a few nice one's at Sobeys last week that I would have paid $10 for... about 15#... one was about 30#. But, some say that the larger or older ones are tough as the nobs. I say it depends on how you do them. Gotta get them cooking slowly and do them just right so they come out nice an soft and juicy.

Kendall... do you have any experience to share in this area?

That myth about the big ol' boys being tough is what
puts the per-pound price of the giants down. Hereabouts,
they're the best bargains. You do have to have the shop
steam them for you, because they're really too large to
fit properly in any sort of household boiling pot. Still,
that's just as well; you go off and do the rest of your
grocery shopping then come back for the lobster.

My experience has been that the big ones done up in a
steamer are quite tender, and in fact the huge claws
are particularly nice. It does take a bit of practice to
crack 'em.

We feed several people off of one of these giants, and
have enough left over for lobster roll next day...

Large lobsters are illegal in Maine. If it measures over 5 inches from the eye socket to the end of the carapace it is considered a jumbo, and must be thrown back so the trawlers from Massachusettes can take them to Gloucester or Boston.
This law was passed in 1939 because the dealers didn't want to handle them, so they called it a "conservation measure".
They have never explained how anything gets more verile with age.

When I lived in Mass, for 9 months, a neighbor gave me a lobster that was as big as my arm. I tried to get into its claw and had to smash it with a hammer. The meat was tougher than Japanese algebra.
It brought to mind, biting into a catcher's mitt.

Kendall......Your lobster sounds like a groundhog I once shot. He was as old as Methusaleh and my friend's Mom boiled him a loooog time before baking him.....and the damn thing was still as tough as shoe leather.

The combo of the two would make a surf and turf from hell wouldn't they?

roughly 1 offspring survives to weigh 1 lb for every eight 1 lb female lobsters that breed.

On the other hand - an average of 2 lobsters will survive to the 1 lb weight from the annual spawning of a single 9 lb lobster. So it definately makes sense to limit the size that is legal.

Survival of the fittest. The older they are the smarter they are at avoiding traps or getting out of them or not getting eaten. Let the smart ones breed.

As for getting "more virile with age". Have you never heard the story of the old bull and the young bull?

Kendall---

I'd be honored to see you eat lobster.

I used to smash the 7-8# claws with a hammer. Until I learnt
the precise spot to nail them with a cleaver to get them to
open up. Granted, it's a good idea to do this outside, because
it splatters a bit.

I think a lot of people over-cook a monster lobster, mistakenly
thinking it needs a radically longer cooking time. Thus the tough
meat. Any lobster gets rubbery if over-cooked.

Maybe it's the fact that we get them steamed that keeps them
tender. Steam works its wonders quickly and deeply.

Howe'r it is, the claws are just dead tender, and the tail is
firm, but not chewy. The crusher claw is insane--- it comes up
about the size of a cornish game hen or a small meat-loaf.

I do, however, feel some remorse in the realization that the age
of one of those big beasts means that they'd have known me father
as a boy.

That goes away in ten, fifteen seconds.

Ill be at the Boyle fest too.

I never met a lobster that was to tough to eat. Steam 'em for about 7-8 minutes & you should be fine a little extra if the huge or you're doing a bunch but the bigger the better IMHO, you get more meat & the legs are worth sucking clean too. Less is wasted with the biggie's more meat per pound.

Actually they should up the size of the leagle limit so the breaders can't be taken before they even have a shot at reproducing. How'd ya like being shot ta death before you've ever been laid, not worth the living if ya can't make it that far.

I've had them Maine lobsters at Sinsull's house and they are pretty scrumpcious. I've even had Kendall teach me how to put the little crusty's to sleep before scalding them to death. But the Red King Crab from the Aleutian Islands beats 'em all to smithereens. Tawmmie and I plan to attend Lobsterfest one of these years and look forward to being there to share some of our crab with you all when we do. So eat hearty and think of us as you pick at your claws.

Back when I was growing up on our hard scrabble farm on the coast of Maine my father would sometimes exchange beef for lobster with the fishermen. We would always consider that a great treat and wonder why fishermen would be interested in beef.

And, yes, sometimes we would get one of them huge lobsters in trade, big enough to fill the turkey platter, big enough so even the legs were something you had to break open to get at the meat, unless you had the suction power of a shop vac (or a Barry Finn). And, yes, the meat was every bit as tender as the smaller lobsters. Now I'm all for banning the capture of the "big ones," as we currently do in Maine, but I still sometimes hunger for those days gone by.

The only thing I recall hearing about Boylestock was that there would be one this year. If it's always on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, in the years they have it, I didn't know that. I've only been to one.

As I've already told Mary I'd be at the lobster boil, I guess I'll miss this one. I was looking forward to it, but I was looking forward to the lobster boil too. Tom, please say Hi to folks for me.

That date would be much better for Linn and I. We're playing for the Strafford County Democratic picnic on that Sunday, but not till the afternoon.

Another possibility would be saturday, the 22nd. The shanty session is the week before that and the Maritime fest, the weekend after. And by that time of year we should be getting hard shelled lobsters.

See you saturday - Tom & Linn

You mean that bonnet and apron? Looks more Amish than Pilgrim. Uh, why exactly did you give it to me anyway? You never DID answer that question.

After dripping butter and crustacean juices on my red shirt last year (and totally ruining it for anything but gardening, by the way), a plastic bib (dropcloth sized) might be a lot more appropriate. I think dripped butter would go straight through that apron. (And I don't THINK I need head protection from splashed lobster juice.)

Maybe a tasteful vinyl outfit. I'm sure you could find one for me online. Uh, well maybe not. Remember when you ordered the cat o' nine tails in bulk.

Ummm, I suck the meat out of legs big enough to suck meat out of, too. Lobster legs, I mean.

Thanks for changing the date! I really didn't want to miss it! (Lobstah at home just isn't the same.)

Kendall? Well gee whiz. The big biggers ain't no good, eh? The best lobster I ever had was poached. We was aboard me buddy's boat, The P*******, and we was off a the Alma, New Brunswick wharf. Old ** left Alma at 14 years old and joined the Canuck Navy. Tough as nails like they say... tougher, I say.

He took us out a ways, spied the coast and steamed in at a great rate a knots. He had one eye on shore and one eye on the water. Idle she went and ** scrambled back like the sixty year old teenager he was, gaffed the line and slung her on the winch. He took a big bigger out of the trap, fired it to the stern, dumped the trap, scrambled f'ord and off at full. One eye on f'ord and one eye astern.

We anchored off off Cape Enrage and the screaming began... no hypnotics. Me, and ** and **** ***** from Newfoundalnd, 6'6" and near wide as you would imagine, ate our fill, with a two pound margerine container full for home. It was absolutely tender and delicious.

So, I guess the key to cooking a twenty five pound lobster is to make it a bit exciting. Or, drink as much as we did that day.

Now let me get this straight...my psychic powers are intuiting that the date has been changed to Sept 8, and that's a Saturday...

Damn shame if you ask me. I'll be dropping my firstborn at uni in New Brunswick just before the long weekend, and am looking for something fun (with my secondborn) on Labour D weekend before heading home...it would have to be super fun to get me into the US, but anything's possible.

Sinsull-

Saturday, September 8th works fine for Judy and me; we're giving a pass to the annual Robinhood Farm Musical Gathering this year (but maybe next year we'll revive it).

For those who want more information for the Downeast Pyrates Festival in Rockland on Labor Day weekend: Click here for a knotty and nautical time!

The formal schedule is from 10 am to 6 pm each day.

Also that same weekend is Camden's annual Windjammer Days, with its own range of nautical festivities:

2-5 pm Saturday Gilbert's Public House
2-5 pm Sunday at Camden Public Landing
9 pm Sunday Gilbert's Public House

So one could have a wonderful time cruising between Rockland and Camden, about 30 minutes apart.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

We have lots of Fill One Room; and lots of cassettes of both that we'll let go real cheap to anyone who still has a cassette player. No 8-tracks or vinyl records, though.

Wish I could have joined in!

I heard a guy on the radio one day say that he sent a gift box of lobsters to his intern and her husband for their wedding anniversary. She was a vegetarian, but ate fish. The couple lived in Manhatten. The intern was appalled at the gift and before her husband came home from work, the lady decided she'd release the poor creatures ... so she brought them to the water, broke through the ice and let them go ... into the pond at Central Park!

... true story!

Jed, if you didn't have a gig while the lobsters will be in the process of being slaughtered like small arachnid versions of Mayan sacrifice victims - except nobody will be yanking out their little beating hearts (we don't know where they keep their little hearts anyway) and Mel Gibson will not be present - I'd suggest you fire up the private jet and make haste to Maine.

So did the alligators eat the poor little Central Park Pond lobsters?

Thanks Jeri, the "Bums Rush"! It's slang from when I was a kid & before, I believe it was in common use during my stepfather's generation & before. I sometimes think some of the sayings that I don't hear anymore, I don't hear because I've been living in Cow Hampshire for so long & away from the big city speak, when it may be that phrases that I think of from when I was growing up are actually no long in use. The Bums Rush, just like it sounds, when a free hand out is available the bums are the 1st to rush in & crowd it. Through a bunch of lobsters in the duck pond in the Boston Gardens & the rich from the Ritz will be 'duking & ducking' with the bums for the free meal

Hey...we're still alive....been a hectic month. Several good gigs last weekend...another tomorrow night for the Adventure...400 plus in attendance. Schooner race weekend it is indeed.
Not sure about the 8th as we have a major board meeting for our boat and a gig in NH on the big lake in the evening. If this falls through we may take a ride to Maine and participate....we should know by next Tuesday, but it looks positive at this point for the music. Essex Shipbuilding set on the 15th, another on the 22nd and Portsmouth on the 28-30. We'll let you know mid week. Hope all our friends are well and healthy. My mate and I have been pretty lined up with events. Charlie and Judy...you lucky dogs....the other side of the world again. Please give Spooner a big hug when you get there.

With only one wek to go, I thought it wise to get this thread back up in case there are any others with an inclination to join this mad mob..

See you Saturday -   Tom and Linn, who will be arriving early with extra kettles.

Geez, the ShopRite's here in PA just dropped their lobster prices
to $6.99 a pound for the 1-1.25 pound ones, and they have a LOT.
Everyone at the seafood counter is running out with bags full.

Way less than we paid in Brewer 10 days ago.

Claim they're Mainers. We put a bunch away yesterday--- they seem
like they're from Maine, to taste and texture. Not soft-shell
really, but maybe some are marginal in that direction, with a bit
of space between shell and meat post-steaming.

Soon the prices on the monsters (not from Maine) will go down to
$8.99, and life will be good again.

That and king crab clusters are back down to $6.99. Not as big as
several months ago, but YUMMY!

If they don't have the Maine stamp on their backs don't buy them, they're knock offs, leave 'em for the rest of us.

The mind boggles on how those dear little baby lobsters get their Maine stamp!!!!!! Mary, count us in for 2 -- do you want other food too, and what should it be? I almost never provide food for these festivities (it's always Tom) but I can actually bake rather well -- would a proper (ie, non box made from scratch) cake be welcomed?

I must apologetically back out at this late date. I'v got a gig in Philly on Sunday, and unfortunately my body just will not respond well to spending 10 hours in a car two days in a row. Maybe next time. Again I'm sorry for the late notice.

Marc,
I am disappointed that you can't make it but understand the travel constraints. Don't worry about the late cancellation, this affair is pretty free wheeling. Mostly we will miss your voice.
Another time,
SINS

Crusty bread will be welcome, Charlie along with any pre-lobster snacks. I will put out some crackers and cheese with grapes. Fresh strawberries or blueberries would be nice. Whatever strikes your fancy. BUT NO SALSA!

Note to dog owners - the beasties are welcome. My new fence has added a huge area to the yard. The cats have agreed to tolerate a few canines for a day in exchange for fresh lobster..

Lobsters in the coolers and ready for the off.

Seamus has been deposited at Mary's along with coleslaw and tomato and onion salad.

The temperature here, according to one display, is around 95F. Our own thermometer puts it at 90F.

Lots of cooling drinks will be in order.

It was hot and sticky! Yuck! But the lobsters were eaten along with aome steaks. The dogs enjoyed their fill including about a pound of Blue cheese. The desserts were terrible especially DebC's carrot cake. I ate it to make her feel better as did everyone else. Deborah's lemon cake was also devoured out of pity. heh eh

Great music. Thanks you all for sharing. And of course Micca called hoping to find us all asleep - we weren't.

It really was a nice gathering, and evidently attracted the attention of a saint, several more small nuns, and god knows what else.

The lobsters were well prepared, the salads fresh and delicious, the desert cakes a delight even for those who prefer to grumble. And there were several good rounds of singing, in between the rounds lamenting the bursting of the mortgage lending bubble, national politics, and the weather.

Nice to have Nancy King joining the gathering.

Thanks again, Mary, for hosting this end of summer soiree.

Spaw-

You have to be there to better appreciate the lobsters. Virtual lobster just doesn't cut it.

Mary - thanks again. I am not sure I say it sufficiently -- you are so generous to give your entire home over to huge groups of people on such a regular basis.......I can't begin to imagine the pickup work in the morning. Tom apologizes for leaving so early -- he had been in legal seminars to two solid days and was pooped. The lobsters were absolutely yummy -- I wish, like some others there, I had room to eat more than one......

Judy and Charlie -- many thanks for the ride home.

I think they keep pretty well once they are cooked. They smell bad to me fresh or old so...
