From: GUEST,mg

It is almost exactly a month away. Hope people can make it. Let me know as soon as possible. I am not going to do much in trying to spread the word this year, and this year will probably be the last year...not definite...if attendance is way down then for sure it will be because the one thing I can't do is publicize well enough. So I won't be doing as much this year as before, and I won't try to get local people, who have just never really showed up, and I won't especially try to get new people, although they are welcome. So it will probably mostly be people who have known each other from various events over the years. I think the weather should be great..I would almost gamble on it, and the location is beautiful.

If people can help by spreading the word that would be great. If you can carpool with a couple of friends that would be great too. Let me know as soon as you can if you plan to come, and if you can send out an email to your friends that would be great, but other than that I am not going to sweat it. We have some definites already, and it is no problem adding people at the last minute, up to a limit that we won't worry about yet, if ever...so come and have fun and email me at mgarvey@wsu.edu if you are likely to make it or need more info.

Will be at tip of Long Beach Peninsula, Washington State USA...very beautiful site..wonderful for bike riding. Looks like a great place to kayak, but it is quite dangerous. There are lakes you can go on here, or you can get a guide if you want to kayak on the bay, but can not launch from the camp. You can get swept out to sea.

Well, email me for more info. There is a web site somewhere I should update. This is getting into my really busy time at work..cranberry harvest, grants etc..so I am just going to take it easier this year. mg

There really is almost no planning involved..it is just getting the word out that "bogs" me down..I basically can not do it. I had assumed that we would fill up with local people and just have a few people from Portland and Seattle..but it has been the opposite...

The other stuff is a snap...I just make a Costco run, make sure I have someone to do the final cleanup, and we are ready to rumble. Of course most people know each other from Singtime, Rainycamp, Camp Alexandra etc. and we follow a pretty standard protocol. mg

Hi Mary,

I'm hoping to be there again this year. Looking forward to some great singing late into the night!

I'll ask John to post the info to the Portland Folkmusic Society email list and I'll push it at the song circles I attend until then. I do hope we can get more folks than last year, but it'll be good anyway.

Cheers,

David

trust me..I was grateful for every one there...it looked quite bleak for a while..part of the problem was a big conflict for Portland people. But I am not going to sweat it this year...I think we'll have enough and have a great time regardless...and since I am not going to widely advertise in public venues I think we will get a very high percentage of non-blue book fanciers...in fact I said straight out only use them for your own use if you are in the main lodge, and have sessions during the day where they are encouraged and enjoyed in one of the cabins. But with not many places to break out in the evening, I want to keep the evening singing nbb. What I would love to see if the people who love the group singing come down in groups from Vancouver, Victoria, Bellingham, Seattle, and of course up from Portland, Corvallis etc. And have one last major regional blowout.   mg

Well, it is getting closer. I think we are going to have a small, as expected, group, but singing dynamos. It should be a lot of fun. I have heard via others that more peopl are coming...I know of about 15 for sure and probably 5 maybes..so I am hoping for 25 people this year..we have run 30-40 in the past...I have not had the time to really do the publicity to get more people..and since it will be the last year, I don't want new people to get disappointed so it will be mostly us old-timers.

September 28 to 30.   Nahcotta, Washington, where they do the oysters...near Oysterville of course..this is on the Long Beach Peninsula. IT IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR OCEAN SHORES AND ABERDEEN. STOP IF YOU GET TO ABERDEEN. YOU HAVE TO TURN AROUND A BIT AND HEAD TOWARDS RAYMOND AND DOWN TO NASELLE..FROM NASELLE YOU CAN FOLLOW SIGNS TO ASTORIA (DON'T CROSS BRIDGE THOUGH) OR LONG BEACH. iT IS NEAR THE mouth of the Columbia River. Some people have been confused and gone to Ocean Shores..NO.....

Once you get to Ilwaco or Long Beach, just head north..there are only two streets..Sandridge and Pacific Highway..main street. Just go about 10 miles from Long Beach to the light in Ocean Park. Turn right and go about a mile. Turn left and go about a mile, past the signs for the Ark restaurant, past the Port of Nahcotta, past a white house. There used to be a clump of trees with a sign that was hard to see. Now it is easier to see because they cut the trees down..don't know why...There is an old wooden sign that says Morehead Park or Camp Morehead..I forget which. Park in the parking lot..not by the cabins...

$55 for the weekend...less if you come for the day (stay in motels etc.) or bring your own food. Just email me at mgarvey@wsu.edu. It is OK to pay when you get there. It is also OK to just show up, although I would rather know in advance...but we are close to a grocery store and will have lots of room.

Bring warm blankets and clothes as cabins are unheated. We only have two main buildings..a lodge with the kitchen, fireplace etc. used for singing...and the boathouse used for ping pong and instrumentalss...anything else can be done outside..weather has been beautiful..or in one of the cabins.

Hope to see you all there...remember it will be the last one so let's go out with a bang..or a whimper..doesn't matter..it should be a lot of fun. Bring anything from your garden..fruits, berries, vegetables, flowers...

No pets except one has permission to stay in their RV but not to come into thel main lodge. mg

If anyone comes for the first time and gets lost...get to Long Beach. Then go straight up the main road with all the stores etc. (Pacific Highway) and go about 10 miles to Jack's Country Store at the light in Ocean Park. Turn right. go one mile to intersection. Turn left..go about a mile..past sign for Ark, past Port of Peninsula, past piles of oystershells on left..right past Port of Peninsula is a property with white house..right next to that is Morehead park, where we are. Just turn in and park in big field that used to have nice trees...Head towards main building and there we are.

I will try to have my cell phone on. It is 360-244-5205. If you still get lost go back to Jack's and call and someone will fetch you. mg

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT GO TO OCEAN SHORES. I HESITATE TO USE THE TERM OCEAN PARK BECAUSE PEOPLE READ IT AS OCEAN SHORES. HUNDREDS OF MILES APART. OCEAN PARK SI OCEAN SHORES NO N O NO. STOP IF YOU GET TO ABERDEEN AND YOU WILL HAVE TO BACKTRACK JUST A BIT TO GET ON ROAD TO RAYMOND IF YOU COME FROM THE NORTH. WATCH FOR DEER ON THE ROAD AND EVEN BEARS. MG

MS Garvey -- is it in Ocean Shores? Iheard that was its real name, no??

(Jus' kidding,ma'am).

I reckon you studied up with Miss jen on giving Girly Directions, except she might have said "Go about a mile until it begins to feel you've gone too far for sure, and then right AFTER that turn left....".

Well, let's see...got the groceries...and my car would not start again in Costco...got towed back to Long Beach...

We'll have plenty to eat..not to worry..although I have not heard from my fishmonger yet about the salmon...but please to bring Robinia grapes, BB anything overtaking your garden, even Zuccini, which I have a great recipe for that includes garlic and parmesen cheese...anyone who has any harvest they would like to bring..apples, I have Asian pears which should be ripe, and cranberries and huckleberries...

I think I enjoy the meals as much as the singing..

Oh, my roommate is going to do the cleaning, but she is scheduled to work at 2 which means she has to leave at 1:30. No one has to leave early..stay as long as it is light...but we might have to shove you around. What we will do is have a nice brunch, clear everything out of the kitchen..I will hustle perishables away for a food bank..we will set out leftovers and sandwich makings for lunch, and let her have the kitchen for final cleanup..

We still don't expect people to have to do chores at the end, other than clean up after breakfast and sweep out cabins. My roommate will do the kitchen, bathroom and floor of main cabin.

There is nothing worse than knowing you have to drive 4 hours and hear a plea for volunteers, so don't worry. mg

So how was camp? Did the sun shine? Was the singing wonderful? and the instruments too? Was there fresh fish to share? Did the painting work shop happen this year? I have fond memories of Sunny Camp a few years
ago!

Hi Laurel,

We'll tell you next week, after the camp this COMING weekend, that the sun came out, the music was great, and the food was delicious.

You still have time to drive up. We'd love to see you again.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Still lots of room...small but very select group...just come for whatever amount of time and we will charge you for whatever portion. Directions up above in some message. mg

Anyone want to do a workshop? No time like the present to plan for this upcoming event. (We all know each other so I am thinking there will just be a lot of impromptu stuff, but we might as well look official).

I might do one on Sat. afternoon on autumn songs...oh goody, we can do Raglan Road. mg

Sounds good. I know that it is coming up into the Jewish High Holy days and I remember Fred and Janet V. doing some great songs from that tradition, so maybe we could have that too. The problem is not putting all the ones I personally want to hear at the same time.

Can you say parodies?   mg

I am going to lock up the office in about 10 minutes and head out. The weather, contrary to predictions, is absolutely beautiful today, warm and breezy...I got a strong young man from work to do the heavy box moving (which I strongly recommend in planning these events)...got the chocolate chips and an accordian in my car...got freshly caught salmon and freshly picked cranberries...will make a pot of soup and some oatmeal cookies when I arrive...

We are going to have candles and lace tablecloths tomorrow.

Oh yes..we are going to sing too..forgot about that.

Lots of room, so come on down for the weekend or the day if you want. This is the very last one and I think it is going to be quite lovely.   mg

Freshly caught salmon!? Hebrew Songs? Tablecloths? Parodies? Freshly caught salmon!?

Hmmm..   Where's the nearest airport for Long Beach and how much does it cost to fly in from So. Cal?   ; )

Seriously, y'all have a great weekend.   (Or do it unseriously.)
