Subject: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Dazbo At Work Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:03 AM Is it just me or does anyone else think yogurt doesn't taste as nice when eaten with a plastic spoon rather than a metal one. I know it shouldn't make any difference but, for me at least, it seems too! |

Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Rapparee Date: 29 Aug 07 - 09:13 AM I eat yogurt with a fork. |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: wysiwyg Date: 29 Aug 07 - 09:51 AM corrected post: Some baking is better done with a wooden spoon. I think there are chemical actions occurring between food substance and untensil that matter, but I don't know what they are. But it's true for ice cream, too. Wood or plastic, spoon or paddle, um...... no, I'd rather carry folding camping utensils in both cars. I throw away a lot of plastic spoons! :~) A fork is nice for really cold, hard ice cream BTW. Thus I often use the fork half of the camping silver while Hardi takes the spoon half for his softer, gooier serving. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Aug 07 - 10:28 AM There is no substitute for a good, sturdy wooden spoon when baking. Metal spoons usually have short handles and sharp edges - not comfortable at all to hold and useless for creaming the butter into the sugar. As for the yoghurt thing, it's much better from a proper metal spoon. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: skipy Date: 29 Aug 07 - 11:15 AM I have found that a pint of bitter left to stand for 3 days in a plastic glass tastes worse than one stood for 3 days in a glass "glass" Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 29 Aug 07 - 12:03 PM The cheap plastics used in cheap plastic dinnerware continually emit odorous chemicals. When you eat with a plastic spoon, you get a whiff of some sort of polymer every time the thing comes near your nose. It's not really taste, but our senses of smell and taste are so closely tied that it may as well be. And there are tactile issues as well. For one thing, plastic spoons don't conduct heat like metal spoons do. The natural warmth of your tongue warms a metal spoon so cold food glides off of it. Plastics don't warm as quickly so cold food tends to stick to plastic spoons. If it were a matter of all plastics actually affecting the taste, yogurt wouldn't be packaged in little plastic tubs, would it? |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Aug 07 - 12:13 PM Nothing is as nice when eaten with plastic. Plastic ware says "This occasion is second rate." |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Anne Lister Date: 29 Aug 07 - 12:22 PM And the even bigger question is - do you use a big (dessert) spoon or a small (tea or coffee) spoon to eat your yogurt? Me, I'm a teaspoon sort of person but my husband is happiest with a dessert spoon. We're quite compatible usually ... Anne |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Dazbo Date: 29 Aug 07 - 01:07 PM Bee dubya ell - your suggestions make sense so I must remember to take a metal teaspoon to work for lunch time yogurts - a dessert spoon is too big IMHO the teaspoon lets you savour the delights longer:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Metchosin Date: 29 Aug 07 - 01:18 PM It is also best not to eat yogurt with a silver or silver plate spoon either, as the acidity of the yogurt reacts with the silver and also imparts a taste. Stainless steel is better in this instance. Teaspoon size of course. |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Rapparee Date: 29 Aug 07 - 01:47 PM Most of my occasions ARE second-rate.... Suppose I ate the yogurt out of Waterford crystal? Apart from demonstrating my innate good taste, would it affect the taste? |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: katlaughing Date: 29 Aug 07 - 02:18 PM Mets, that explains why I can't use my favourite old spoon from my mom's set which is silverplated! I knew it tasted funny, but not why. Thanks. I use a dessert spoon because I never eat yoghurt alone. I mixed vanilla yoghurt with two tbsp. of cottage cheese, about 1/4 cup of granola, and a half cup of frozen blueberries, so I want to stir it well before eating. Also, I like the length of the handle on the bigger spoons. Shorter handles poke my palm and are uncomfortable to use. |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: Bat Goddess Date: 29 Aug 07 - 02:57 PM I don't particularly care to use plastic utensils when eating -- the texture is "wrong" plus I think it does affect the flavor of the food. I also dislike drinking from plastic glasses because I think it affects the flavor. I also really disliked those aluminum glasses from the '50s -- they made my teeth stand on edge. And now they're showing up in catalogs of retro style (along with those stupid metal lawn chairs that were always rusted or had a puddle in the middle of the seat or squeaked). Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Yogurt and spoons From: SINSULL Date: 29 Aug 07 - 03:51 PM My we're cranky, Linn! heh heh If the alternatives are plastic or nothing, with yogurt I go with nothing. Give it a good shake and drink it. |
