something petty officer once announced at the end of the line? (5,6)

the third letter of the first word is A - definitely

The fist letter of the first word might be S

Many of the clues depend on getting this and I'm stuck.

any help would be appreciated

thanks

taupi

The maybe S is from the clue

When special forces get the wrong killer

I thought it might be assassin

Nothing is nil, and backwards it is Lin and linen is the end product of flax, but then I'm stuck

I think it could be small change as another clue is "maker of 5 across's 18"(6)

5 across is leather and 18 could be small change, I think the answer might be purser

"Change at the end of the line" is a vernacular English phrase, but the letters you gave cannot match, however 'petty change' is 5,6 ...

nil backwards is lin, spot is see, doily is a lacy thing - take the y off and you have linseed oil

Yes thanks, Jon I think I managed the rest, have to wait a week to see if they are correct.

I try to do the Guardian crossword everyday. Monday is the easiest usually and it gets harder as the week progresses. Saturdays is usually a killer.

My favourite recent clue was this:-

persuade three edjets? 2,2,2,2,2,2

can you get it?

Any ideas about 2d?

Hi Pat

Just got 2d - EGAL (say = e.g., a l = one left; egal sounds like eagle, and means 'same').

Hope you're enjoying getting to grips with the cryptic stuff - fun, isn't it!

By the way, are you going to let us into the secret of the "persuade 3 edjets clue?!

Our favourite was "Dis duck or dat duck?" - 5,4

Partridg & PMB,
for "Over-burdened mailman" you were supposed to ask "How many letters"

Ans. Thousands & Thousands.

If it was EL?(3,7,11) - note the question mark - the answer might be The Spanish Inquisition.

And just because I can't stand not telling you, my one above - E(13) is Senselessness.
