Subject: BS: Mudcat Story Writers, what say you?

I have been looking over a lot of the old story threads and, once again, been blown away by the fantastic writing and creativity in them. I have also been doing a lot in the book business these past few years. It occurred to me, in reading the stories, we have so many that are so damn good, it's a shame they are not in some condensed form, i.e. edited and published in book form. I know it would be a huge project to edit each one and I know we've talked in general, way back when, about publishing Mudcat books, but I don't think we've ever focussed just on the story threads before.

With everyone's permission, I think I'd like to choose just one to begin with to edit down into readable form, without the asides, etc. and see what comes of it. I have nine more ISBN numbers of we get serious. I think there is a market for this kind of stuff, with or without any musical reference. Good, fun novels are hard to find and I think we have the potential.

Anyway, how do all of you feel about it?

Thanks,

kat

I feel fine about it, Kat, because I don't have time to undertake such a thing myself. Out of courtesy to LEJ's project on the Missouri River story, which he has packaged into some form as a script, we should put that one aside.

Go for it!!

Keep all the authors informed as you go.

I think that's a great idea. There are many of us who are strong storytellers, who may not be such strong singers. We've got the Mudcat "Blueplate Special" cds for the community. Might be nice if us Storytellers got into the game with our strengths, too...

Hey Gargoyle...I think that is both insensitive and discouraging where we should encourage anyones will to increase their own knowledge and skills. Who are you to judge who is capable or not. All those who secured any positions had to learn as they went and maybe Kat has skills that you have not seen the measure of.
Kat...Go for it but always give credit where it's due and revenue too if it happens.
Best wishes, Mike.

Hello Kat,

I would say...go for it! See where it takes you...if it works...that'll be a job worth doing...if it doesn't, then at least you will have tried and not have a little collection of "what ifs..."

Best wishes,

Peter

Well, well, well...

Sounds like a great project, Kat... I think MiziAzizi had somethiong like that in mind a couple years ago... Anyway, she is a story lover in her own right...

I've written several stories here over the years... Not too sure if they are still archived but they probably are... The two that come to mind are "Bobert's Fishing Story" about the 300 pound mudtom and "Bobert Jumps the Freight Train Story" but I'm sure there are others...

Seein' as I don't believe that I'm goin' to get 'round to writing my own book of stories you may feel free, or not, to use any of my stuff...

Bobert

Thanks for your input folks. I guess I should clarify, I am mostly talking about the story threads which were collaborative efforts. NOTHING against anyone's exclusive stories; Bobert, you and Spaw both have been prolific. Thanks, again,

kat

Oh, yes. putting the collaborative stories together would be great fun -- the "Tavern" storie are a blast, but hard to read through in their raw form...

Kat, I agree with others that it would be wonderful to have a book of stories from Mudcat story threads. Also, a book of stories written by individual Mudcat members would also be great. As Bobert mentioned, I had briefly thought about working on such a project. But that seems looong ago, even if it was only about a year and a half ago.

I've read a number of Bobert's stories and stories written by other Mudcatters, and I certainly believe that these stories definitely deserve to be published in book form. If you, or any other writer, or any other Mudcatter wants to work on such a project-with the prior approval of those writers and what ever other steps need to be taken, I say go for it!!!

Thanks, folks.

We did start talking about this way back in 1999, but as you will see if you follow the link, that was to be a book of music thread content, which I still think could be interesting, but which eventually fell to the wayside. My personal life got in the way.:-)

I can't start on this until after the 18th of Sept. and I may be too busy even then, IF I sell a lot of my own book that weekend and have more orders to fill (wish me luck?!) but I will definitely keep this on a burner and see what can be done.

I've read some of kats' stuff and she is a heckuva writer.

How'd you become such a mean bastard?

I think it's a great idea. Kat, if there's any aspect of the editing that I can do to help, feel free to call on me. I could perhaps cull the obvious stuff and send it on to you for the creative part. It could bring the job into manageable proportions for you. I'm not a story teller but I like working with words.

Gargoyle..can I suggest you go away and learn some interpersonal skills including sensitivity....lack of making judgements on others and how not to make blatant discouraging attacks on others. There are many ways of saying what you want to say without your crass, bull in a china shop method!

I seem to remember some Vlad the Inhaler stories that were a lot of fun - started by freda underhill. I contributed occasionally, and so did Little Hawk, and others. Freda hasn't been in much of a position to be near a computer lately, but that is only temporary. I can ask her, but I'm sure she'd be delighted to see those stories put into more easily readable form!

Janie's stories are wonderful too!

Amos

the story I scripted was the Drinking Gourd story. Been thinking about a major re-write, because I still think it was a great story.
I say go for it, Kat! The best story in my recollection (next to Drinking Gourd)was the Pirate Story that Amos started...best characters, most cohesive plot, reasonable resolution. But the Shenandoah story had its moments, as did the Return of Blake, which had wonderful stuff by Neil Lowe. The Shangri-La tale was also very good, with great material by Peter and Jen. The Mudcat Soda Shop drag-race extravaganza was also a fun one. I'd have a hard time choosing.

Garg, I remember you actually wrote some bits for the first Blake Madison story, and they were pretty good too. For general cranky bastardlyness, I think you should be expelled from "everyone", and officially declared "no one". Then, whenever no one's approval was needed, you could chime in.

Jaysus, LEJ, just because I can't remember my ass from whatever the other thing was!!! Seriously, sorry about the misrecollection. The Missouri River story was a fine piece of work but it almost failed completely until you bailed it out with a reasonable ending.

Don't forget the marvelously intricate time-twisted plot of the steamboat Albert J. Hansell, or the Starship Mudcat, both rollicking fun. Any of these could stand a good hosing off of extraneous matter, though. :D

Links??

I have long envisioned Chongo Chimp as what's called a "graphic novel" these days....used to be called a comic magazine. This would require the right artist, however, and it would be a big project. Frank Cho of Liberty Meadows would be perfect...and he loves cartoon chimps...but I think his plate is full already as it is.

Gee, thanks, Amos! Funny thing is I was just thinking of this the other day and wondering which one to start with...I am doing a lot better and may actually be able to function well enough to do a decent job.:-)

I thought either the Juke Joint or Searching for Shangri-la one. I haven't read through any of them in years, so would have to do that before deciding. Whaddaya think?
