Subject: The latest on Kendall's voice From: kendall Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:47 PM Well, I'm back from Boston, and here's what the man said. After nearly two hours of manual manipulation of my larynx, and squeezing my throat like he was trying to throttle me, and asking me to make a myriad of sounds, he said, there is a voice there, and it needs three things to bring it out. 1.Patience 2.Determination 3.Confidence Also, to continue working with my therapist in Portland, and regular sessions with Dr. Roediger, my ENT, and with Dr. Shapshay, the surgeon, to be sure the cancer does not return. The exercises he gave me are silly sounding, and boring. Some of them are painful, which goes against my nature. No pain, no pain is my motto. But, I know Jacqui is going to crack the whip and make me miserable if I don't keep up with my end of the deal. He also said that I probably shouldn't expect a call for me to replace Pavarotti. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: John MacKenzie Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:49 PM Go for it Cap'n, it sounds hopeful, and just think how much you can tease folks when it comes back :D Great news my friend. Giok |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:50 PM Good news in wolf clothing there Cap'n. Persevere with it dear, it will be worth it in the long run! LTS |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:51 PM Kendall- Maybe we can work up some of the "silly sounds" into a song. Let's give it a try on Saturday. I'm sure we can make them less boring with rhymes. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: bigchuck Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:53 PM Well, for what it's worth, I thought your voice definitely sounded clearer and stronger when I saw you at Old Songs. This sounds fairly positive to me. Keep up the PITA exercises and do everything Jacqui tells you to like a good old duffer ( or at least pretend to). Good on ya. Sandy |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Midchuck Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:53 PM It is absolutely necessary that you persevere. Jacqui needs constant lecturing concerning her flaws of character, and I'm too busy with my own wife to come over there and do it. Peter |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: SINSULL Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:01 PM Patience???? LOL Good news, Captain. But don't worry about lecturing Jacqui. Tami and I can handle that for you. M |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: curmudgeon Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:13 PM Kendall -- I know you to be a man of determination and confidence. May you also attain the level of patience needed. I really want you to be part of the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival in 2008 - Tom |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Micca Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:14 PM It reminds me of the St Augustine (?) quote " God, send me patience.... SOOON!!!!!!" |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Becca72 Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:38 PM Patience...not something that comes naturally. Don't worry, Dad. I remember all the curse words I learned "helping" you fix cars and I'd be happy to come over when you're doing your exercises and use them for you until things improve. :-) |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: wysiwyg Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:42 PM What are the things you want to sing about-- the things that matter to you? If you focus on the fact that the silly exercises will get you able to do that, that may help you value the time spent doing them. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: CapriUni Date: 06 Sep 07 - 05:46 PM Now, That's something I never thought I'd see on Mudcat: The Captain, Kendall Morse, Complaining about silliness. Boredom? certainly. Patience? oh, Most definitely! But I never thought he'd complain that something was too silly! |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 06 Sep 07 - 06:01 PM Well what the heck Skip. It's like you do anything else well. Except for maybe drinkin', boatin' fishin' and book writerizin'. Besides as far as rumor spreading and story telling and spellbindin' goes, I'm catchin' up. Just ask George ward. Don |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Hawker Date: 06 Sep 07 - 06:04 PM Go for it Birthday Buddy! Heres hoping that with patience and the bloody mindedness that comes with being a taurus, you will soon be raising the roof in song! Jacqui, dont cave in, keep on at him, he'll thank you when he can look back and see it was worth it! Much love, Lucy |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Rapparee Date: 06 Sep 07 - 07:26 PM Kendall -- I found this picture of Jacqui on the web. You really SHOULD do what she says..."cracking the whip" is a literal phrase here. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Maryrrf Date: 06 Sep 07 - 07:42 PM That is good news Kendall! Sounds like there is a very good possibility that you will have your voice back, sooner rather than later! |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Barry Finn Date: 06 Sep 07 - 08:07 PM That's great Kendall, I was getting worried that each time I saw you we were doing something wrong, you kept whispering to me or maybe you were just sayin sweet nothings in my ear. Anyway I'll be glad to get you little lips off my ear next time we meet. I know you'll be happy about it too. Barry |

With the 4 of them cracking the whip, you'll have no choice. Some of my fondest memories are of you singing. I sure would like to hear more of you without having to put on a cd. karen |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Janie Date: 06 Sep 07 - 11:08 PM Jacqui, you had better give this some thought. There are advantages to a spouse with limited capacity to talk back. Such positive news, Kendall. Now get to work! Janie |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: katlaughing Date: 06 Sep 07 - 11:48 PM That's wonderful news, Kendall! We know you have the perseverance and confidence, I hope, now for the patience! My surgeon told me it would take three years at least to lose the extra weight I put on when I was so sick and couldn't exercise. It has taken me until now to remember how to breath deeply enough to get enough O2 without a tank AND get my body in good enough condition to start exercising. So...maybe we can hook up as "buddies"...you make the silly sounds while I walk it off!**bg** luvyakat |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Big Mick Date: 07 Sep 07 - 01:26 AM Jacqui, Becca, and Mary, I want you to stay on his ass like his underwear, and make him do those exercises. I am counting on him getting this done. We have some singin' to do together, and with Utah. Keep up the good work, my friend. Mick |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: GUEST,Cats at Work Date: 07 Sep 07 - 05:58 AM I knowexactly the strange sounds you are on about. I had to do a whole raft of exercises when my voice went earlier this year. The cats thought I was most odd, let alone Jon!! Nevertheless I persevered and managed to sing a bit this summer. Perhaps we could duet? keep it up. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Leadfingers Date: 07 Sep 07 - 06:28 AM Great news Kendall - Keep up the good work - Good story tellers are few and far between , and the singing matters as well . |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: jacqui.c Date: 07 Sep 07 - 06:49 AM Rap - if I wore that lot I'd look like an overful bin bag! I do have the cat o' nine tails we got at our wedding reception however....... Ihave to be very careful with this - if I push too hard the stubborn old bugger just refuses to do anything (Taurean trait). I shall just have to be crafty and get some help from Ladies of Maine, who I know will be only too pleased to get involved. I've set the Getaway as a target for Kendall to get some voice back and am hoping that, with work at home and his visits to his wonderful speech therapist (female and fell for his charms first time out!), that the target is doable. jacqui.c - control freak on a mission. Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: kendall Date: 07 Sep 07 - 07:53 AM Patience Determination Confidence I have all three when there is something I really want, and they work on a number of levels. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: SINSULL Date: 07 Sep 07 - 08:56 AM Yes you do, Captain. Pretend that your vocal chords are Capital One and they have screwed up your credit card bill. Or better yet that they are Window World refusing to put in the already been paid for windows. Now go at 'em. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: RangerSteve Date: 07 Sep 07 - 09:31 AM Kendall, I don't know you, but Sinsull sent me one of your tapes as a Secret Santa gift. It's in my car and I play it quite a bit. And your recording of "Rolling Home" is in my computer, courtesy of Rose, the Record Lady. I'm going to get my band to do it. Anyway, it would be a shame for that voice to be stilled. So do you exercises, because I'm retired now, and having gone to a police academy run by the NJ State Police, I haved an idea of how to push someone. YOU CALL THAT VOCALIZING? MY TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CAN SING BETTER THAN THAT! WE CAN STAND HERE ALL DAY IF WE HAVE TO. LET'S GO LET'S GO LET'S GO, I WANT SOME SINGING DAMN YOU, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, THAT'S NOT SINGING, THAT'S WHINING. MAYBE YOUR MOMMY THINKS THAT'S SINGING, BUT I AIN'T YOU MOMMY AND I WANT TO SING LIKE A MAN AND IF YOU CAN'T WE'LL JUST SEND YOU HOME TO YOUR MOMMY BECAUSE I DON'T THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT!!!!! And we can go on like that all day. You don't want that. So, do what Jacqi and the rest of the folks up there tell you and we'll all be happy. Steve |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Art Thieme Date: 07 Sep 07 - 11:37 AM ...and the doctors keep praying, "Lord, give me patients." It's a hell of a roller coaster, Captain. But we, me and probably you too, ride it, screaming all the way, and learning to like the positives of it quite a bit when we can. Like single malt scotch, the taste can be acquired. Still the long dips can be lonesome at best. Just be glad you see a light in your tunnel, and that there is a way to, hopefully, rehab it for you. And a decent community is here for you. Onward and upward! Yer old friend, in folklore and jokelore, Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: kendall Date: 07 Sep 07 - 12:04 PM Jeez, what a combination! Threats, support, positive reinforcement and humor. Now I don't dare fail. Having even ONE of you on my case ia too grim to contimplate let alone half a dozen of you. :-) |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Greg B Date: 07 Sep 07 - 01:28 PM Consider lobster therapy. Easier advice to take than "don't go outside in the cold." |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Dan Schatz Date: 07 Sep 07 - 02:23 PM Patience Determination Confidence Now there's a challenge. Be patient, but be determined. Wait, you have to work AND wait at the same time? That hardly seems fair. AND you have to be confident? Even when nothing's happening yet? Well thank you very much is all I can say. But I know you can do this. Do you remember what you once told me about "76 Trombones?" Keep that for your confidence. And don't worry about sounding silly. Have you ever HEARD 76 trombones? Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: kendall Date: 07 Sep 07 - 04:40 PM No, but I've heard your CD after misplacing it for some time, and I think you did a great job.If I could pick like you do, I wouldn't feel so bad about not being able to sing! |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: SINSULL Date: 07 Sep 07 - 11:08 PM I got him to try some, Spaw. He grimaced, grabbed a bottle of water and went back to his bland chicken with snow peas. It had no effect on his voice or disposition. We will try lobster with butter this weekend. |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: vectis Date: 13 Sep 07 - 07:57 AM Good news Kendall. Keep up them exercises and get the rest of the voice back to go with the hint. Mary |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Rapparee Date: 13 Sep 07 - 08:53 AM Now, if you want to get the rest of that voice out, stick a couple fingers down your throat (best cover 'em with Vaseline first). Fish around down there until you grab onto it and pull 'er up! If it isn't your voice, toss 'er back -- this is catch and release stuff. Alternately, go down to one of them touristy-type shops (they're all over Maine, so you won't have to go far) and get one of those tiny little lobster traps they sell as earrings or ornaments for the Christmas tree. Tie a good stout string to it, bait 'er up, and swallow it (tie the free end of the string around your ear). Ever so often, haul 'er in and see what you've got. Now these are called "alternative medical therapies" and they're pretty much ignored by mainstream medicine. So don't tell your doctor. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Becca72 Date: 13 Sep 07 - 10:32 AM What would you use for bait in something like that, Rapaire? Tiny little picture of W would have him talking pretty damned quick, I suppose... |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: gnu Date: 13 Sep 07 - 04:06 PM I thought you got off yer ass at the end? Why else would you take an ass on a trip? I mean, if you are gonna get off yer ass at the start, it must be because you've got a stubborn ass. Or a stupid ass. I mean, if you gotta haul ass the whole trip, well, that's assinine. Of course, if you take some ass on a trip, well, that's... delightful. I'll stop now. Hey, I try, but, I am just a dumb animal. dumbassgnu |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: curmudgeon Date: 13 Sep 07 - 04:23 PM Kendall, have you tried to work out guitar arrangements to accompany the exercises? That might make them less tedious - Tom |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: kendall Date: 21 Sep 07 - 08:04 AM A few days ago, I was walking the dog and a neighbor drove by. He stopped to exchange pleasantries, and damned if I wasn't able to speak to him! Had my weekly session with my speech therapist yesterday, and she was blown away by the progress I've made in one week. Things are looking up, and I just might be able to do something at the Getaway. Jacqui wants us to do Phoebe Snow with her doing the singing and me doing the recitation. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: jacqui.c Date: 21 Sep 07 - 08:10 AM And two weeks ago he turned that idea down flat. It's amazing what a couple of weeks of effort can do! |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Midchuck Date: 21 Sep 07 - 08:29 AM Just don't push it hard too soon. Things'll be fragile for quite a while when it does begin to come back. Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Dan Schatz Date: 21 Sep 07 - 11:58 AM Kendall, this is incredible news, and about time. Of course, when you're using your voice a lot trying to be heard in crowded rooms, it may wear out faster - so don't be disappointed if the Getaway voice doesn't last too long. But who knows what progress you'll make by then? Dan Schatz |

Dressed as a Mountie in red serge and peaked hat crooning in a canoe in "Rose Marie" or "Naughty Marietta." Or singing "Three Little Maids From School Are We" -- a little Gilbert and Sullivan might not be amiss.... |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Big Mick Date: 27 Oct 07 - 10:00 AM Stay on the program, buddy. This is an important, and risky, time. It is on you now to follow the program. We have music to make together, and I am counting on you, praying for you, .... and taking the occasional dram o' whiskey for you. OK, well maybe I am doing that all on my own, but it's the thought that counts. Just makes me happy to know that it is coming along. You are never far from my thoughts. jacqui, Sins, and Becca, be sure to keep him on the straight and narrow. Love to all, Mick |

Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: adventure Date: 27 Oct 07 - 05:56 PM Well...we kind of had this good feeling when at Old Songs this year that things were looking up and sounding better for you. It is so wonderful to hear that good things are happening. Keep on track with your rehab stuff....we're sure Jacqui will keep you on track with the required regiments of therapy. Kendall have we got a story for you about Portsmouth....OH MY what have I done now. Thankfully we have strong women supporting us. Joanne almost had me encarcerated for this one.....and without Scotch and all it was done. We have set down a bit on the singing for a few weeks. Did our last chantey/sea ballard event last weekend for the Clam Fest.....attended by almost 2,000 people this year. Lots of fun. Anyway...worked on the Adventure today in the rain......just getting in and trying to dry out. Glad things are progressing well for you. I can't believe that I read Mary turned 70 this past week. She does amazingly well for her age. Best to Jacqui and you. Doryman and his mate. |
Subject: RE: The latest on Kendall's voice From: Becca72 Date: 27 Oct 07 - 06:00 PM I'll never forget a dinner at my sister's house about 3-4 years ago. My youngest nephew (then about 6-7 years old), who has fairly bad manners in all respects, reached for something across the table and received a gentle reminder tap on the knuckles with his grandfather's fork. My sisters and I all quickly drew our hands off the table and then looked at each other and started laughing. The funny thing was, I'd never actually gotten the corrective tap as a child so I have no idea why I reacted to it. :-) |
