Subject: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: GUEST,mg Date: 11 Sep 07 - 06:22 PM I am not comfortable giving her name here, but a popular Portland singer is in the hospital having had a stroke. They say it is mild but her speech is affected (hopefully that and her great singing will recover). If you need more information, you can email me at mgarvey@wsu.edu. I do not have a lot of details. mg |

Subject: BS: Portland, OR female singer in hospital From: Genie Date: 11 Sep 07 - 11:58 PM First, this thread really needs to be in the "Music" section! Beyond that, Mary, is there a reason why you're not letting everyone know who this incredibly talented, very popular Pacific Northwest singer is? (That's an honest question, not a reprimand.) Those who are not familiar with this woman's music are really missing out on a gold mine! Meanwhile, my prayers go out for her speedy and full recovery. Genie |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: mg Date: 12 Sep 07 - 12:09 AM Well, I think it is better that one of the dignitaries in PFS say who it is. Perhaps you could call one of them and see if they think it is OK. mg |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Genie Date: 12 Sep 07 - 01:19 AM I did talk to Kathleen Ingerson tonight, but she had no new info beyond what went out in the PFS email (except that they have found a good placement for "M"). I'll keep you posted, and I trust you will do likewise, if there's more to be learned. This woman is, indeed, a treasure in the folk music world. |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: mg Date: 12 Sep 07 - 03:02 AM She is. David, do you feel comfortable "outing" her? mg |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Genie Date: 20 Sep 07 - 07:19 PM Mg, which "David" was your last post addressed to? Ingerson? Genie I just got back from a week at hard labor in Seattle, so I haven't kept up. How is our Portland music legend/friend doing? Genie |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Ebbie Date: 20 Sep 07 - 08:12 PM I'm feeling crabby. So I'd like to point out that this mystery musician might not be happy about this behind the sleeve palaver. Why not go to pms? |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Mrrzy Date: 21 Sep 07 - 09:14 AM It may be helpful to note that speech and singing are "housed" separately in the brain, and small strokes affecting speech are very unlikely to also affect song. Aphasia is my specialty - PM me if you want, and wish her a speedy recovery. |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: GUEST,mg Date: 21 Sep 07 - 02:58 PM Yes, she might not be happy, but people outside Portland were very slow to get the news, and we have had some PMs. At this point there are some practical things that people are doing to help her behind the scenes. I would be interested in just a generic update on how strokes can affect speech but not singing. I had heard this too...mg |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Sep 07 - 04:28 PM All of these mysteries from the Pacific Northwest lately. I can find names of singers in the Portland newspaper online, but no mention of any hospital stays. She hasn't turned up as a news story, whoever she is. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Genie Date: 21 Sep 07 - 04:36 PM I don't think you'll see this in the regular press, just in things like the PFS newsletter and emails or at the Artichoke music website. |

Subject: RE: BS: Portland OR female singer in hospital From: Genie Date: 18 May 09 - 11:25 PM Should this thread be merged with the other Mary Benson thread (which, appropriately, is in the Music section)? Genie |
