Subject: Swinton Folk Festival From: the fence Date: 30 Sep 07 - 06:24 AM Anyone got any idea who's on at the Swinton Folk Festival this year? There seems to be nothing on their website! |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Brakn Date: 01 Oct 07 - 07:20 PM I believe it's happening on/around the weekend of the 20th of October. Don't know who's on though. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Sooz Date: 02 Oct 07 - 03:34 AM It always seems to clash with Gainsborough which is 19th - 21st October Pity! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: the fence Date: 02 Oct 07 - 04:41 PM Yep, would agree with that Sooz. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Oct 07 - 08:23 AM It is indeed that weekend. Sorry but I know little more than anyone else but I believe Friday is a concert with Jon Brindley and maybe a singaround downstairs. Saturday has a concert with Stanley Accrington and Martin Hall's new band who's name escapes me. Usual all day Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Mr Happy Date: 03 Oct 07 - 10:38 AM ' megasing ' ?? Don't kno that word, is it 'me gassing' [too much fizzy beer]? 8-) |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Oct 07 - 01:11 PM No fizzy beer in the Lion Mr H! Only good Robinsons:-) I think it is one of the new Transformers - Megasing, son of Megatron. :D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Oct 07 - 10:04 AM Only 2 weeks to go now - Still seem no advertising! Ah well. What do I know. I used to organise it but I have emigrated to Newcastle through the working week! I would never complain about a fellow organiser though and not advertising is at least agood way of making sure that not too many people are there to spoil our fun;-) :D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 Oct 07 - 06:19 PM 12 days and a web presence at last! Web site Damn! Mybe more than the organisers will turn up! :D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Myrtle Date: 09 Oct 07 - 03:26 PM Hoorah, Swinton folk fest and my hols with Mrs. Walton have happily coincided so I can actually attend this year..... Save a seat for Lynn and I...I'm especially looking forward to seeing JP Slidewell after he was unable to get to Louth tonight. Regards, Myrtle. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Oct 07 - 03:52 PM Good on yer M:-) See you then and buy you a drink. You reckon Belly Dance workshops could be on? With my belly it would be quite spectacular... :D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 10 Oct 07 - 05:28 PM I've just noticed - Pete Ryder appears to be on twice! Or maybe, like New York, so good they just named him twice? Ah well. At least when I start to see double I know it is not the beer. :D |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Oct 07 - 04:10 PM Get off the bottom you lazy thread! There's only a week to go... |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Big Al Whittle Date: 13 Oct 07 - 02:52 AM where is swinton. I've got swinton car insurance. is it the same place? |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 13 Oct 07 - 08:01 AM 5 miles west of Manchester. Dunno if the insurance was named after this little piggie town or another! :D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: GUEST,Noreen Date: 13 Oct 07 - 11:45 AM Swinton insurance opened their first branch in Salford in the 1950s- but are now own by a French insurance company. Happy memories of good do's at the White Lion, with and without Navy Cut. Have fun folks! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: nutty Date: 13 Oct 07 - 12:02 PM I have good memories of singing in Swinton in the mid 60's. No folk club then, just a quaint little pub that was knocked down to build the shopping centre. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Oct 07 - 11:50 AM That shopping centre is a pretty damned awful example of what has now become known as 'Brutalism' by the architechtural press. The building at the front, the now closed and waiting for someone to take pity on it, The Lancastrian Hall, was shortlisted as the countries ugliest building:-( I don't remember the pub, I'm afraid, nutty. There was a Conservative club and a Labour club but my 'Pubs of Swinton and Pedlebury' book (Would anyone guess I just may have one of those;-) ) has no details of a pub there. Can you remember the name? It could be that it is either the Weavers or the Football that both avoided demolition by the width of a road! Pop along and see if we can rekindle some more of those good memories:-) Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: nutty Date: 14 Oct 07 - 01:54 PM You got me thinking Dave - so I looked at the area on Google maps. Wonderful satellite images and now think that it might have been The Football. I,d have to go in to be sure. Bit the pub I'm thinking about had a small room on the right as you walked through the door. I used to be in the company of Clive Bolton, Stuart McDougal and Thomas Alan Gee. Do you hear anything of any of them now?? |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 14 Oct 07 - 02:37 PM The Football did indeed have a few small rooms, including one on the right as you went in. For a while the back room, just after that one, was home for Swinton Folk Club - Be around 1980 I would guess. Trouble is the Weavers next door had a few small rooms as well! What a choice of rooms we had until the breweries decided one big room was best! At least we still have the Folk Club Room and the upstairs function room at the Lion:-) The names you mention don't ring any bells but I have only been into folk since the late 70's so could be before my time. I'll ask around though. Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Nick Date: 17 Oct 07 - 04:03 PM I'm not going to make it this year but if anyone goes and bumps into Pete Ryder would they pass on my thanks to him for the CD I got from him last year - Nat Shapiro's Time is now regularly played this side of the Pennines. |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Oct 07 - 03:57 AM Form a string quartet and pretend your name is Keith. In case you was wondering, my eldest two lads did the Chicken Song at one of the early festivals. And it is more interesting than just 'refresh':-) Will do Nick. Guess 'this side of the Pennines' is Yorkshire to you? It's starts tonight! :D |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Myrtle Date: 19 Oct 07 - 11:23 AM Right I'm packed and ready for the great trek to Swinton, see you later, Myrtle. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Brakn Date: 19 Oct 07 - 12:15 PM Unfortunately I will not be able to get there but I'm hoping to be there on Monday. Best of luck. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Oct 07 - 07:57 PM May see you if you make it Brakn - I have a day pass from Newcastle:-) What a wonderful night. Jon Brindley was fantastic, Pete Ryder was on top form and Feet in Mouths were errrm, errmmmmm, something else good! Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Oct 07 - 08:03 PM Forgot to add - Nick, Pete says thanks. Did you used to be Raggytash on here? Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Nick Date: 19 Oct 07 - 08:32 PM No, that's a different Nick. I came last year on the Saturday for the singaround in the bar and came to Swinton folk club a couple of years ago the monday just after the folk festival. Pete came in lateish on and played Nat Shapiro and I thought it was a great song. So I sat down and worked out how to play it a few months ago and it goes down remarkably well. I sang it in Thirsk some while back and a lad there has since learnt it and I sing it regularly in Flaxton and places dotted round Yorkshire. I'm on here playing bass but it's not folk music! Raggytash has a rather large walrus like moustache. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 Oct 07 - 05:31 AM Ahhhhh - Sorry to both Nicks! Shame you can't make it this time. Looks like a good un again:-) PM me here if you want to get in touch with Pete. Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Simon G Date: 21 Oct 07 - 05:21 AM Thanks to Ged and crew at Swinton for a great day out yesterday. Didn't get there until late afternoon but still enjoyed a bit of a singaround with plenty of variety. Thoroughly enjoyed the concert, Staff Folk, Oddfellows and the unbeatable Stanley Accrington. Trouble is after an hour immersed in the world of Stanley Accrington you can't recall anything that happened before. The highlight for me was the great songwriter Ted Edwards singing his own composition Albert and the Coal in the singaround. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Festival From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 Oct 07 - 05:41 AM Don't forget - Survivors workshop and hangover cure session starts around 1-ish. Could be later - could be earlier if Phil Atkinson never actualy went home... :D |
