The building at the front, the now closed and waiting for someone to take pity on it, The Lancastrian Hall, was shortlisted as the countries ugliest building:-( I don't remember the pub, I'm afraid, nutty. There was a Conservative club and a Labour club but my 'Pubs of Swinton and Pedlebury' book (Would anyone guess I just may have one of those;-) ) has no details of a pub there. Can you remember the name? It could be that it is either the Weavers or the Football that both avoided demolition by the width of a road! Pop along and see if we can rekindle some more of those good memories:-) Cheers Dave |

Bit the pub I'm thinking about had a small room on the right as you walked through the door. I used to be in the company of Clive Bolton, Stuart McDougal and Thomas Alan Gee. For a while the back room, just after that one, was home for Swinton Folk Club - Be around 1980 I would guess. Trouble is the Weavers next door had a few small rooms as well! What a choice of rooms we had until the breweries decided one big room was best! At least we still have the Folk Club Room and the upstairs function room at the Lion:-) The names you mention don't ring any bells but I have only been into folk since the late 70's so could be before my time. I came last year on the Saturday for the singaround in the bar and came to Swinton folk club a couple of years ago the monday just after the folk festival. Pete came in lateish on and played Nat Shapiro and I thought it was a great song. So I sat down and worked out how to play it a few months ago and it goes down remarkably well. I sang it in Thirsk some while back and a lad there has since learnt it and I sing it regularly in Flaxton and places dotted round Yorkshire. I'm on here playing bass but it's not folk music! Raggytash has a rather large walrus like moustache. |

Didn't get there until late afternoon but still enjoyed a bit of a singaround with plenty of variety. Thoroughly enjoyed the concert, Staff Folk, Oddfellows and the unbeatable Stanley Accrington. Trouble is after an hour immersed in the world of Stanley Accrington you can't recall anything that happened before. The highlight for me was the great songwriter Ted Edwards singing his own composition Albert and the Coal in the singaround. |
