And my phillies are going to actually participate! It was pretty exciting yesterday. I wasn't at the ballpark but I watched the whole game and it was a beautiful thing. Before the first pitch of the game, the Mets were losing 7-0 and you just knew that it was going to be a good day. Anybody else out there care about the playoffs? I watched them every year. It's the only time of the year that I really enjoyed watching baseball that didn't involve the Phils...now this year, I can have my cake and eat it too cause they won the division! Life is good...

I am a Mets fan. I no longer care about the playoffs.

Congratulations to the Phillies on playing good ball. The Mets need to go back to Little League training to remember the basics.

Like Ron, I've been a Mets fan all my life. This is not a good time for us.

Of course, the Mets didn't exist until I was about 15 years old; I had been a NY Giants fan, and then a SF Giants fan in absentia, but that was just the necessary preparation for becoming a lifelong/longsuffering Mets fan.

I'm having a very difficult time right now with my sports-fan affiliations. Our beloved hometown New Orleans Saints had such a wonderful, even magical, season last year, and everyone expected them to pick up where they left off this time around ~ but it hasn't happened, and the Saints have been VERY disappointing.

College football usually provides me with a half-decent fan experience, but not in 2007. (I graduated from Notre Dame; need I say more?)

During my early years living in the New York metropolitan area, I was never a Yankees fan, but on the other hand, neither was I a Yankee hater like some folks I know. I suppose I'll be more interested in the Yanks this year than in the other seven playoff teams, but I won't be all that enthusiastic. Uncharacteristically, the Bronx Bombers are almost an "underdog" this year, having started the season so poorly ~ makes 'em just a little more likeable than they might be otherwise.

This is the first time in a long long time that I've actually been able to put football and hockey on hold for a while. I will be in front of the tv, beverge in hand, waiting to see the Phillies actually play in October. My only regret is that I wish that I could hear Harry Kalas call the game. Hopefully he'll be on the radio and I can tune him in and tune the tv sound out. Harry's the best....

By the way, I'm not trying to rub salt in the wounds of Mets fans or any other fans that are not in the playoffs. It's just been a long time since I had the chance to watch meaningful phillies games and I really can't wait. Especially since the Eagles are now 1 - 3 and the Flyers haven't started yet!

Hey, Frank, do you remember 1964? The Phils had been coasting toward the pennant, and we were talking about who we'd like to see them play in the Series...but then they went into a tailspin and lost their last 10 games. On the last day of the season, we needed a win from the Mets over St. Louis for the Phils to salvage a tie for first. Needless to say, the Mets didn't win. So a tip of the hat to the Metropolitans for breaking our longstanding record for worst collapse, and finally helping the Phils out in a pennant race--even if we don't have real pennant races any more. 1964 was also the year that the Phils pulled off a triple play--against the Mets--and Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game--against the Mets, of course.

So yes, I'll be eating my Tastykake and watching the Phillies again. (Of course I also remember when we used to say: "On any given Sunday, any team in the league can beat the Eagles.")

Aloha,
Mark

Boy, am I pissed. In '64, I was living in Filthydelphia [It really was then.] and watched them go supine. Now, I'm back in my native NY metro area and I'm watching the exact same thing happen--against the Phils. Feh.

"So a tip of the hat to the Metropolitans for breaking our longstanding record for worst collapse"

Not exactly.

Granted they were both futile finishes, but the Mets slide actually began five weeks ago and during the slide they managed to push their lead back up to 7 games (helped by sweeping the Braves)before finally losing it all. The Phillies collapse was sudden and total:

1964 Phillies - 12 games remaining, 6 1/2 game lead on Sept. 21. Phils lose 10 straight.

2007 Mets - 17 games remaining, 7 game lead on Sept. 12. Mets lose 15 out of 17, longest streak at 5 games, and finish 1 game out of first.

Ron,
Some other differences, the 64 Phillies were not supposed to win that year, they were a good team but no one picked them to win Pennant. They simply came down to earth. this year's Mets team WAS supposed to finish first and in fact they have the most talent in the NL East and they imploded. Yeah, losing the last ten is imploding too but 15 out of 17? If that's not sudden and total, I'm not sure what is.

Go Phils!
Frank

P.S. By the way, anybody got any good excuses to tell the boss that I need to go home early Wednesday and Thursday? Games are on early. I might have to sing her the ol Mike Cross song!

Sorry Frank, but I'm not buying it. I'm not excusing this ugly finish by the Mets - it certainly ranks up there (rank being the operative word.)   This was one of the worst finishes ever.

However, I still think the '64 Phils keep the crown because of their quick demise.   Losing steam and collapsing over five weeks (when the Mets decline started) and dropping out of first in the last two weeks is a big difference. The '64 Phils also finished in a tie for second.

The 2007 Phils also put together a hot streak at the end that coincided with the Mets decline by winning 13 out of 17.

I'm not going to stand between Frank and Ron's "discussion" but I have to admit that having been scarred for life by the '64 Phillies, there is definitely a wonderful healing sensation happening for me right now.

Ron, are you gonna try to take our 10,000 loses away from us, too?

For '64 Phils: Been there, done that
Members of the infamous team say they can sympathize with the Mets.
By Sam Carchidi

Inquirer Staff Writer

The New York Mets' free fall has been greeted with sympathy by several members of the 1964 Phillies.

Those Phillies, of course, suffered the greatest late-season collapse in baseball history. They led the National League by 61/2 games with 12 to go - and promptly lost 10 straight and finished in a second-place tie.

The Mets have lost a seven-game lead in two weeks and fallen out of first place. If they finish second, behind the Phillies, they will have blown a seven-game lead with 17 to play.

No, it's not quite as grim as the '64 Phillies' math, but it would put them in the neighborhood.

"I feel sorry for them; they've been in first place the whole year," Tony Gonzalez, a starting outfielder on the '64 Phils, said yesterday from his home in Miami. "And there's a chance they won't even get the wild card."

Gonzalez paused.

"I was through it in '64 and wouldn't want it to happen to anybody else," he said. "No matter what you do, you keep falling down. The Mets scored nine runs the other day and still lost. Their bullpen was the best in the league earlier in the year, and now they can't get anybody out. The same funny things happened to us in '64. . . .

"[Johnny] Callison hit three homers in a game, and we still lost. Chico Ruiz and Willie Davis stole home to beat us. In another game, Felipe Alou strikes out and reaches first on a passed ball with two outs, and then Hank Aaron hits a homer into the upper deck and beats us. I think '64 was worse than what's happening with the Mets because of the way we lost."

Ray Culp, whose sore elbow kept him from pitching during the Phillies' late-season '64 collapse, said he "absolutely can sympathize" with the Mets, "because if they let it slip away, they'll have some bad memories."

"That," said Culp, a real estate investor in Austin, Texas, "is not my most pleasant year to remember."

Even if the Mets continue to falter, the image of the '64 Phillies never will be erased, said Jack Baldschun, who had 21 saves for the '64 Phillies. "I've always said if we had won the pennant, we wouldn't have gotten as much press as we did for losing it."

Baldschun said he could relate to how the Mets were dealing with their late-season problems.

"We tried a lot of things. You hold team meetings, and that doesn't help. You play as hard as you can, and you still lose," the retired lumber salesman said from Green Bay, Wis.

Dennis Bennett, who went 12-14 for the '64 Phils, wasn't as sympathetic to the Mets' woes.

"I don't feel sorry for them," said Bennett, who owns a cocktail lounge/restaurant in Oregon. "I feel happy for the Phillies. I signed with the Phillies, so a piece of me is still with them."

I am happy for the Phillies fans, having just left the Metro Philadelphia area. I hope they enjoy their moment in the sun, but remember this. Don't get too high, as the Red Sox are going to take it all this year anyway. They will shut down A Rod, and anyone else the AL sends at them, then they will spank the National League pretenders, and all will be well in Beantown. If you don't believe me, just ask Seamus Kennedy.

Now, if the Cubbies could make it to the World Series and play Boston, would the Sun blink out?

...Poppagator, it is going to be a rough couple of years for us Notre Dame fans. We can thank Mike DenBrock for this mess. He didn't recruit an offensive line to replace the last bunch, and Charlie got saddled with it. But fear not. They have just come off another spectfriggintacular recruiting year.

The day after the Fighting Irish lost to Michigan State, I was climbing on the airplane for my regular Monday flight, decked out in my ND shirt. I got a lot of grief but I pointed out that it is easy to be a fan when they are winning.

Sorry for the digression. Back to baseball.

Greg - I guess someday all teams will reach that plateau, but no one can ever take 10,000 losses away from the Phils.

Not to sound like sour grapes (my Mets suck big time), but let's keep things in perspective.
1. From 1918 to 1973 the Phillies could only manage a finish higher than 4th place five times, a period in which they finished last 20 times. (These were the years when there were 10 to 12 teams in the league.)
2. During that time period, they finished in last 20 times.
3. They lost 90 games in a season 30 times.
4. In 1961 the Phillies set a major league record by losing 23 consecutive games. (Even the '62 Mets never sunk that low!)

Of course the team started to rebuild after '73 and good baseball men like Bill Giles, Paul Owens and Dallas Green would be hired to turn the team into a winner.   They had some great years, but they also reverted to old ways. They would often finish 20 or more games out of first.

The biggest problem with Phillies - poor public relations. Think about it. Everybody talks about loveable losers like the Cubs and Red Sox and their supposedly suffering fans.   If you look at the Phillies, they have them beat for futility, but you rarely hear them discussed so nostalgically and lovingly.   I know for a fact that they have some of the most loyal fans in baseball, but you don't hear about them.

I am going to hope for a Cubs-Phils series for the NL crown, and I would have to give an edge to the Phillies to make it to the World Series.   I would love to see a Phillies - Red Sox series.

Geez, no Yankee fans here I guess other than me. Having won 5 out of 6 against Boston in the last couple of weeks, I'm not worried about the Yanks vs. Boston. Lost in the Mets collapse for non New Yorkers was how incredibly well the Yanks have played since the all star break. Simply put, they are peaking at exactly the right time. Much as the Boston fans want Arod shut down, if no one else has been able to do it all year, then how will they. ANyway, right there with him is Posada, Abreu, and Cano, just to mention 3 others! Yanks are not going down weakly this year folks!

Mick, and ND fans (& haters) everywhere,

I don't doubt what you have to say about recruiting failures, but I have to wonder about Charlie Weiss lack of prior college-coaching experience. In the pros, where Weiss developed as a coach, you don't have that same inexorable four-year turnover of personnel, and you don't have teenagers on your bench.

The Irish lost an inordinate number of starters on both sides of the ball, but it is probably even more significant that last year's backups, who are forced into action this year, got very little playing time and perhaps very little attention and inadequate practice time. They obviously have not been properly "brought along" through their early years.

In the pros, the backups are grown men; they were all probably full-time players in college, and they all know they are being paid to stay in shape and to be ready to play when necessary. In college, the underclassmen who are not starting need to be consciously developed ~ and it looks to me like that may not have been happening at ND the past couple of years. Whole different deal, as far as the coaches' responsibilities are concerned.

Hey, I don't mean to knock Weiss ~ I'm still a big fan, and I think his is a great story: attended Notre Dame but did NOT play football, graduated from a tough academic program (engineering!), started coaching high school football and climbed the ladder to the Super Bowl as offensive coordinator. And he's a Jersey Guy, one of my homeboys; Middlesex High, where I believe he satarted his coaching career, is only about a mile from my childhood home.

This is the first time anything negative about the man has occurred to me, but I think there may be something to it. He probably needs to learn more about managing the whole college-team roster, and about developing young talent more effectively. I'm confident that he WILL learn from this very distasteful experience this year.

Sorry about continuing the drift; I know we're supposed to be discussing baseball, but I'm still too depressed about the Mets. Give me a few more days to get over it. I enjoy watching good baseball even when I don't have a rooting interest ~ maybe moreso, since I can applaud and admire every good play, regardless of which team benefits...

Y'all wanna' know who the best recruiter Notre Dame ever had? Woody Hayes. No shit. He always made them the second choice for all the kids he recruited. Ohio State first but if not for whatever reason, go to Notre Dame.

Sorry Irishenglish, I cannot stand the Yankees. The last time I set foot in Yankee stadium was in 1978 to see Jerry Koosman pitch for the Twins - and I wore a Red Sox hat that night. For a number of years I drove a car with a bumperstick "Warning... I don't brake for Yankee Fans".

I know it is silly. I know I am being childish. I know it is stupid. I just have a deep hatred for that team. It all stems from a run-in outside of Yankee Stadium with that piece of garbage Mickey Mantle when I was a kid.

IF there is one good thing to come out of the Mets demise, it is the fact that it has kept the Yankmes out of he sports headlines.   Go Indians!!!

Are you really mentioning Abreu as a positive???? The Phillies record since they let him go is amazing! They actualy made a run at the playoffs last year and it started right after Abreu left. Watch him in the playoffs...most of his hits will be before the 7th inning, home runs (if any) will be with no one on base...the point being, he is not a crunch time player and will fold like an A-rod in the playoffs...

Frank

P.S. Wow, See what getting to the playoffs does to you? :)

Look, all kidding aside, you have your allegiances, and you have your thoughts about who is valuable, and who's a bum. Abreu might be a bum for past digressions, as could Arod. Truth is, for the Yankees he has been a positive. And I said it before, I know the playoffs are the other season, but at least until they start, and whatever you think, can you not agree that Arod has been awesome this year. If only some of that spills into the playoffs....well, who knows. I like the mixup of teams this year in the National League, and I'd like to see any of them, but especially the Phillies or the Cubs make it all the way. Not an argument for this year, but when the Yankees were the team 96-2000, I got into arguments with Mets fans all the time about how we bought our team, to which my response was, oh, so we bought Jeter, Petite, Posada, Rivera,Bernie Williams? No, we raised them in the minors. This is a high priced team this year for sure, and if you ask me, that has been a contributing factor to why the Yankees have not been as good recently. But I am pleased with what they have done with Cano, Cabrera, Duncan, and Joba this year, which is why I again say, this team is peaking right now, so don't count them out. I think this is already going to be a great playoffs, and whoever you support, good luck!

I totally agree that Abreu is and can be a positive. But through the entire time he was with the Phillies, I kept getting sucked in by the stats, because they were great but the bottom line was (at least in a Phillies uniform) he never dove for a ball, his batting and slugging percentages plummeted after the 6th inning. I hope he does better for you, in fact, I'd love to see the two predictions I heard on ESPN last night come true...they both said Phils/Yanks in the series!

As far as the cheap shot I made at Arod, it was exactly that, a cheap shot. The difference between him being one of the best ever and THE best ever is probably his past performance in the playoffs. No one wants him to turn it around against their team so if it comes down to Phils/Yanks, I'd prefer to see the same ol A-rod.

Go Phils...
Frank

Tough to win a game when your first four batters go 0 - 15 with 9 K's. Damn. Well, they've gone about it the hard way all year, I guess I should expect any different in the playoffs. Today's another day with a new game and a starting pitcher that started the year in AA!!!! Yep, we don't do anything the easy way around here. The good news is that this Kendrick kid have been a real find. I expect him to be the number 2 or 3 starter next year depending on Myers status as closer/starter.

Go Phils!

Frank

Umps, keep an eye on that Rockie

Rockies closer Manny Corpas came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth, retired the Phillies in order and that was that.
Or was it?

TBS cameras on Corpas warming up before coming into yesterday's 4-2 Colorado win in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park clearly showed the righthander pour a cup of water or soda on the front of his shirt before leaving the bullpen and then rubbing dirt on the area.

Then, when he went into the game, he appeared to go to that spot before several of his pitches in order to get a better grip on the baseball. Since the Rockies' road jerseys are black, any discoloration on the shirt would have been difficult to detect.

It's illegal for pitchers to apply a foreign substance to the baseball. That became a huge issue last October when television cameras showed Tigers lefthander Kenny Rogers with a noticeable smudge on his pitching hand during Game 1 of the World Series against St. Louis.

The Phillies declined comment.

Crew chief Dale Scott had left the ballpark and was not available for comment.

"I don't know anything about it," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd told the Rocky Mountain News. *

Hey Frank (Pseudolus), now that Charley Manuel has got his team into the playoffs and won the Eastern Division, has that horse's ass Howard Eskin apologized or anything? I dearly loved listening to Angelo Cataldi in the mornings on WIP, but it didn't take long for me to realize that Eskin was a failed athlete know it all with a much bigger opinion of himself than anyone else had. I wrote a letter to the Editor about that to the Inquirer yesterday.

I am rooting for the Red Sox, but I love the Philadelphia fans!!!

I heard that on the radio today and I watched the end of the game. I don't know that there was anything illegal going on but I know that he was good enough to fool the home plate umpire during Ryan Howard's last at bat. A guy who called an otherwise stellar game behind the plate rung howard up on two pitches clearly out of the strike zone and Howard was pretty upset. This is not, by the way, the reason that the Phils lost, the Rockies had to hit through the same shadows, they had the same (very consistant) umpire and they outplayed the Phils. That's why it's a five game series. I'm looking forward to getting our other youngster out there to shut down the rockies and hopefully the Phils bats can wake up in game two.

Go Phils,
Phrank

Mick,

I haven't seen or heard any such thing from Eskin...he probably thinks he's responsible for the Phillies turnaround because he was so hard on Charlie Manuel and the team....

Greg, thanks for the report. I never could understand the attraction to this guy. He is arrogant, belittles anyone that doesn't agree with him. I thought Charley might put a down home, goin' to Jesus, ass whuppin on him earlier this year before I left the Philly area. If the Phils don't make it another step, there is vindication for Charley out there.

Somehow Eskin manages to stay on the air. They just had a big celebration for his 5000th show! I'm feeling like we are bemoaning the wrong thing around here. Why fret about 10,000 losses when we've had to endure 5,000 shows by Eskin????? At least some of the 10000 losses were before I was born!!!!

Phrank, I can't imagine celebrating this pompous ass being around that long.

I hope the Phillies go all the way in the NL.

Way up thread I saw a number of referneces to the '64 Phillies being up 6.5 with 12 to go and then losing 10 in a row. This got me to wondering about the other two games. Turns out they lost 10 straight to go from 6.5 up to 2.5 down (they had not been more than 2 down all year, twice in May) and then won the last 2 to finish 1 game out. Baseball-reference.com is a wonderful thing, go there if you haven't.

I also saw reference to the Cubs winning 116 and losing only 36 (in 1906) but no mention is made of the fact that they proceeded to lose the series 4 games to 2 (to the cross-town White Sox no less).

KB, thanks for the link. Can't use it here at work but I'll get there when I get home.

Mick, me too, I think a World Series would be awesome. I thought all along that it would go five games and it just might.

You definitely should visit that site, you will be amazed. I was just looking at the box score (with play-by-play) of the 6th loss of the 10 by the Phils in '64. The Phils were up 4-3 after 8, the Braves scored 3 in the top of the ninth and then Spahn pitched the bottom of the 9th and set the Phils down in order. Two fly outs and a pop-up.

I'm a little depressed today but I'm not giving up. We got the Rockies right where we want them...tired, overconfident, thirsty for champagne...all those distractions that will keep them from hitting Moyers 80 mph fastball! I will be there, in front of my TV that is, with beverage in hand, cheering for one game at a time.
