So, like it's the third inning, Boston's at bat with one out and they have EIGHT runs. Cleveland maybe should just give up now and go have a beer or something...

Seamus, I'm glad to have warmed the hartles of your other bit that isn't right. I hope it's better soon, but I'm not sure I want to know.

I should have stayed awake for the end of the last game. The Sox should have as well. I'm sure it was just too late and they were sleepy.

We're done with the Yankees and this Boston fan, he's
Looking forward to Rockies and Sox for some fun.

Pick up your crest, Donuel. There's always next year.

I generally root for the Cubs if they're not playing the Cards or Rockies. And I'm a true National League guy, so I'll even root for the Snakes if they go.

My father visited a friend who lived in NYC and took me along to that and then to a Mets game. I was little enough that I don't remember much except the friend's apartment and roasted peauntus. I only remember the peanuts because I'd go with my mom to pick my dad up from work sometimes, and they had a machine in the dispatch office (dad drove a bus) that dispensed warm 'redskin' peanuts and I LOVED them.

Anyway, that was a long time ago and I didn't go to another baseball game until my boss's boyfriend let our whole office sit in his box seat, drink his free beer, eat his free snacks and watch the game in the air conditioned room on his closed-circuit TV... like anybody wanted to be inside. The BoSox played the Yankees, and Boston got stomped. Fun to watch Billy Martin. Well, it would have been a lot more fun if he'd been pissed off about something.

Actually, yes - all of them.   The one that really hit home was the boy/birthday present story.   I know many Yankee fans like that.

My money is on the Red Sox now that the Cubs and Phillies are gone. The Yankees will fold like a cheap suit and that will be that.

I'm surprised I didn't notice the 'guy club'* across the street yelling and stuff. I had to hear it on the news! (I could have watched the game, but I haven't been into baseball too much of late.)

*Guy club = a 'garage' with a big-screen TV. "Red Sox Nation" painted on the windows, a "Fenway Park" sign and a "Red Sox Parking" sign, and usually about 6 trucks parked outside when a game's on.

I feel badly for the Phillies fans. Good bunch, but the ass whuppin' was going to come eventually no matter what. I wish they would have made the Series and took it at the hands of the Red Sox though.

Seamus ..... you forgot the "empty all body cavities of liquids and unswallowed food" warning. You have been around long enough to know better. The "that's alright, I got him" thing was an unconscionable disregard of concern for others and you need a dose of confession. I will be back, have to go change my BVD's.

A family of New York fans headed out one Saturday to shop for the youngest boy's birthday.
While in the sports shop the son picks up a Red Sox jersey and says to his older sister,
"I've decided to become a Red Sox fan and I would like this Boston jersey for my birthday."
His big sister is outraged by this and promptly whacks him upside his head and says, "Go talk to mother." Off goes the little lad with thejersey in hand and finds his mother.
"Mom?" "Yes, son?"
"I've decided I'm going to be a Red Sox fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday."
The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and says, "Go talk to your father!" Off he goes with the Red Sox jersey in hand and finds his father.
"Dad?" "Yes, son?"
"I've decided I'm going to be a Red Sox fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday."
The father is outraged and promptly whacks his son in the back of his head and says, "No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT!"
About half an hour later they're all back in the car and heading home. The father turns to his son and says "Son, I hope you've learned something today?"
The son says, "Yes, Dad, I have."   "Good son, what is it?"
The son replies, "I've only been a Red Sox fan for an hour and I already hate you Yankee bastards."

Four baseball fans - a Cubs fan, a Cardinals fan, a Red Sox fan, and a Yankees fan - are climbing a mountain and arguing about who loves his team more. The Cubs fan insists he is the most loyal. "This is for the Cubs!" he yells, and jumps off the side of the mountain.
Not to be outdone, the Cardinals fan shouts, "This is for the Cardinals!" and throws himself off the mountain.
The Red Sox fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells, "This is for everyone!" and pushes the Yankees fan off.

A Red Sox fan liked to amuse himself by scaring every Yankees fan he saw strutting down the street in an obnoxious NY pinstripe shirt. He would swerve his van as if to hit them, then swerve back just missing them.
One day, while driving along, he saw a priest. He thought he would do a good deed, so he pulled over and asked the priest, "Where are you going, Father?"
"I'm going to give Mass at St. Francis church, about two miles down the road," replied the priest.
"Climb in, Father. I'll give you a lift!" The priest climbed into the passenger seat, and they continued down the road.
Suddenly, the driver saw a Yankees fan walking down the road, and he instinctively swerved as if to hit him. But, as usual, he swerved back onto the road just in time.
Even though he was certain that he had missed the guy, he still heard a
loud THUD.
Not knowing where the noise came from, he glanced in his mirrors but still didn't see anything.
He the n remembered the priest, and he turned to the priest and said,"Sorry, Father, I almost hit that Yankee s fan."
"That's OK," replied the priest, "I got him with the door."

From the Associated Press:

Season Comes To Quick End After Bats Go Silent

DENVER -- Philadelphia's first trip to the playoffs in 14 years ended in a power outage.

The NL's highest-scoring team in the regular season sputtered once the playoffs started, leading to a quick and dismal sweep at the hands of the Colorado Rockies in the NL division series.

Led by MVP candidate Jimmy Rollins and All-Stars Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, the Phillies overcame a rough start to the season to track down the New York Mets, winning 13 of their final 17 games to take the NL East crown on the final day of the season.

But just when it looked like Philadelphia might have a chance to end its tortured quest for a championship, the Phillies' bats went silent at the worst possible time -- in two of baseball's most hitter-friendly parks, no less -- leading to their first postseason sweep since the 1983 NL championship series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After scoring 292 runs (5.5 per game) during the regular season, Philadelphia managed just eight against Colorado's young pitching staff. They didn't come close to their .274 average during the season, either, going 16-for-93 (.172) with 26 strikeouts during the series.

The worst of it came in Game 3, when the lights went out at Coors Field and on Philadelphia's season. After a brief surge in Game 2, the Phillies were flat in the finale, managing a run and three hits, putting just two runners in scoring position.

It was a surprising conclusion for a team with so many stars.

Rollins never really got going at the plate or on the bases, going 2-for-11 with one stolen base. Howard, last year's MVP, hit a homer in Game 2, but had two hits in his 11 other at-bats and struck out seven times. Utley also struck out seven times, going 2-for-11 in the series.

And when the Phillies needed them the most, the trio couldn't come through, combining for one hit in nine at-bats, each striking out twice in Game 3 at Coors Field, typically one of the easiest places to hit.

"We were a little tight," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We were chasing balls out of the strike zone early in the game."

By the time it was over, the Rockies were in their clubhouse spraying champagne while the Phillies walked off in disgust, extending a sports-mad city's misery for yet another year.

It didn't help to have the announcer comment that Lohse should stay away from down and inside to Matsui on one pitch, then have Lohse put the next pitch there, too, which Matsui hit for the grand slam.

You definitely should visit that site, you will be amazed. I was just looking at the box score (with play-by-play) of the 6th loss of the 10 by the Phils in '64. The Phils were up 4-3 after 8, the Braves scored 3 in the top of the ninth and then Spahn pitched the bottom of the 9th and set the Phils down in order. Two fly outs and a pop-up.

Way up thread I saw a number of referneces to the '64 Phillies being up 6.5 with 12 to go and then losing 10 in a row. This got me to wondering about the other two games. Turns out they lost 10 straight to go from 6.5 up to 2.5 down (they had not been more than 2 down all year, twice in May) and then won the last 2 to finish 1 game out. Baseball-reference.com is a wonderful thing, go there if you haven't.

I also saw reference to the Cubs winning 116 and losing only 36 (in 1906) but no mention is made of the fact that they proceeded to lose the series 4 games to 2 (to the cross-town White Sox no less).

I heard that on the radio today and I watched the end of the game. I don't know that there was anything illegal going on but I know that he was good enough to fool the home plate umpire during Ryan Howard's last at bat. A guy who called an otherwise stellar game behind the plate rung howard up on two pitches clearly out of the strike zone and Howard was pretty upset. This is not, by the way, the reason that the Phils lost, the Rockies had to hit through the same shadows, they had the same (very consistant) umpire and they outplayed the Phils. That's why it's a five game series. I'm looking forward to getting our other youngster out there to shut down the rockies and hopefully the Phils bats can wake up in game two.

Go Phils,

Hey Frank (Pseudolus), now that Charley Manuel has got his team into the playoffs and won the Eastern Division, has that horse's ass Howard Eskin apologized or anything? I dearly loved listening to Angelo Cataldi in the mornings on WIP, but it didn't take long for me to realize that Eskin was a failed athlete know it all with a much bigger opinion of himself than anyone else had. I wrote a letter to the Editor about that to the Inquirer yesterday.

An article from: http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/sports/20071004_Umps__keep_an_eye_on_that_Rockie

Posted on Thu, Oct. 4, 2007

Umps, keep an eye on that Rockie

Rockies closer Manny Corpas came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth, retired the Phillies in order and that was that.
Or was it?

TBS cameras on Corpas warming up before coming into yesterday's 4-2 Colorado win in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park clearly showed the righthander pour a cup of water or soda on the front of his shirt before leaving the bullpen and then rubbing dirt on the area.

Then, when he went into the game, he appeared to go to that spot before several of his pitches in order to get a better grip on the baseball. Since the Rockies' road jerseys are black, any discoloration on the shirt would have been difficult to detect.

It's illegal for pitchers to apply a foreign substance to the baseball. That became a huge issue last October when television cameras showed Tigers lefthander Kenny Rogers with a noticeable smudge on his pitching hand during Game 1 of the World Series against St. Louis.

The Phillies declined comment.

Crew chief Dale Scott had left the ballpark and was not available for comment.

"I don't know anything about it," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd told the Rocky Mountain News. *

Tough to win a game when your first four batters go 0 - 15 with 9 K's. Damn. Well, they've gone about it the hard way all year, I guess I should expect any different in the playoffs. Today's another day with a new game and a starting pitcher that started the year in AA!!!! Yep, we don't do anything the easy way around here. The good news is that this Kendrick kid have been a real find. I expect him to be the number 2 or 3 starter next year depending on Myers status as closer/starter.

Go Phils!

Frank
