Just wondering if anyone remembered my Brother Brian Codling from the 60's. He had something to do with the set up and running of the folk club in the nags head. Unfortunately we lost him this year, to Covid. We have been reminiscing!

Hi .. shocked to stumble on this as my parents were involved in the running of the club through the 60's .. i still dine out on the story that paul simon slept on our sofa and ju felix sang us off to sleep .. dick frost is a name i remember and i think he and a guy by the name of johnny seabrook took us and Julie irons in his 3 wheeled car to towersy festival i would love to hear from anybody that remembers this, please message me [e-mail] thanks

I think the Wycombe Folk Club was held at one time in the Nag's Head in London Road in High Wycombe. I remember going there.

I have that album by Romany I also have the Country Roads To Turville album as well as one by Ffilharmonious Jug Band. From the High Wycombe Folk Club The best days were at The Coach and Horses on London Road. I worked bar there for a while. I think the club moved to The Globe in White Hart street when they pulled the C and H down. Sad to see any pub go but particularly sad to see that one die. Memories sigh! I wonder how many are still walking the planet?

I remember Romany, I think the third member may have been Clive Carey. I went to Turville Folk Club as well, also Wycombe Folk Club and one in Chalfont St Giles at a pub called the Merlin's Cave. It was wonderful, I really loved the clubs, a very happy time of my life.

Anybody remember Romany? Ray, Mags and somebody else. They made a record, engineered by a friend of mine called Ashley Preston - sadly no longer with us. They also appeared at Turville Folk Club, run by the late Len Harman. Happy days!

Marlow Bottom Acoustic Club is alive and well under the excellent stewardship of Alan and Rosie ( great performers ). It now has three venues in and near West Wycombe and one at Freith nr Lane End. We go less now due to the distance but the George and Dragon is a good venue and could hold more. I mostly remember the Bird in Hand period and one booking with Johnnys Orchard crammed into an upstairs room in the Plough? I think the music is still very active, but more at festivals now but that is another topic!

I remember all of the people who have posted here about the High Wycombe club. Some fond and some not so fond memories. The club itself was probably one of the best outside of London and the standard of performers quite scary if you were a novice. I often wonder what happened to everyone from those times. Folk was the big thing and was the starting place for many of the artists who still grace the airwaves today. It's quite sad that a musical movement once so strong now occupies such a lowly place in music.

In 1970 I was based in Heacham in Norfolk, but my work as a tree faller took me around the country, working on various estates. I knew nowt about folky music and I had never picked up an instrument, never mind played one. But I'd always had an attraction to folky music, and particularly, guitars. We were felling in Penn wood and on a visit to High Wycombe, we discovered a folk club, in a pub, down some stairs. A lass called Holly ? sang some songs and that made my night. Many moons later, I'm a lot wiser musically speaking.

I started my folk singing career at H. w. Folk club in the 60's. I sang with Julia Irons on occasions. Later I became a member of Muckram Wakes and The New Victory Band and met some of me friends from High Wycombe when gigging
in the area including Julia, Dick Frost, Clive Carey....!
Such happy days back then. I so want to get back in touch with Julie Irons (Colclough).Can anyone help ? x

Sir Francis Dashwood ; yes !! You can still see the infamous Golden Ball from the main road ;there may even be a link ,albeit tenuous, with the eponymous pub in Lower Assendon ,near Henley ,and of course Medmenham Abbey is close by, by the Thames ; spooky !

How wonderful to read of our patrons from all those years ago. Bob and I opened the club at the Coach and Horses in March 1965. After a couple of London gigs, ours was the first club at which Paul Simon sang. The Philharmonious Jug Band was made up of some great guys from the air Base and a local farmer. I still have their album. Dick Frost was a stalwart forvthectraditinal songs, indeed it was after hearing him that Paul Simon got the words from Liz Brockfield and some chords from me for his rendering of Scarborough Fair. We had most of the circuit singers at the club, including Julie Felix and Tom Paxton. Yes it was 2s 6p to get in. All news welcome....

I remember the Wycombe club very well, and I certainly remember the Ffilharmonious Jug Band!I also remember the Nag's Head, and didn't it end up at the Rose & Crown (or similar name...)? I saw the Young Tradition there, which was a real high spot for me! I have often googled some of the players'names that I can remember, but with little success. The jug band has a Wikipedia entry, though, and I know where 3 of the 4 members are.

The Folk Chamber was in an old half timbered pub (Coach and Horses) when I joined . That was demolished and the and for club moved around a lot . When I left the RAF in 1972 the club was in Nags Head for the second time, and I was invited onto The Committee.
It was the first period at the Nags when Paul Simon did a floor spot and would have done a booking but the club wouldnt raise their offer.
Didnt you go to Amersham more than Wycombe Dave ? I DO remember a Dave Hill who played a bit of Washboard on occasions.

In my dotage am I imagining it but did I used to go to a folk club in RAOB rooms above a pub on London Rd/Wycombe Marsh in the early 60's? Did I pay 2/6d to see Paul Simon, did we have a "Philarmonias Jug Band" with members from the USAF High Wycombe? They sang/played "Ukelele Lady" I seem to remember. the only name I remeber is "Jack" Frost. Did we have all night bashes after the films had finshed at Beaconsfield Cinema? Did we have Dis Disley? Noone will remeber me, I was very modest, had a lot to be modest about!
