Anyone know what is going on? Is everyone safe? Is Micca's house safe?

According to the BBC it's an old bus garage.

Over here the news immediately suggested terrorist attack.
Too bad - it would have been nice for Micca to have an excuse to stay longer.

There was an incredible amount of smoke just half an hour ago. We saw the column of smoke from our offices in the City even though we're hemmed in by tall buildings. If it had only been a few streets away I would have thought it a large fire. By the time I went outside the column had collapsed and you could tell the true distance. If it is an old bus garage then I suspect there are a few old tyres and drums of diesel to add to the smoke, not to mention that the concrete would have been soaked in diesel anyway.

Didn't have a clue it was happening until I opened this thread, which I thought was about the fire back in the 17th Century.

Apparently firemen often have to endure attacks by "yoofs" as well as the dangers of the fire itself.

London's burning, London's burning,
Fetch the engine, Fetch the engine,
Chuck bricks, Chuck bricks,
At the firemen, wha'ever...

My wife and I are planning to visit London for a week next May. Please don't burn down the city until after we've left. Thanks ever so much.

Just spoke to my son up there, the brigade did a grand job in very dangerous conditions, residents told to close their windows as there was an asbestos roof on building.

The building was due to come down shortly. The costly problem of the removal of the hazardous asbestos roofing has gone. Seems to have been the work of vandals. The disused premises had been a favourite haunt for under age drinkers.

Well, glad no one seems to've been harmed... but I was expecting a thread about Boudicca's famous burning of Londinium, since I read a few months ago they'd got a dig going in that strata of London's past.

Count it as a practice run Mr Fox....

The smoke was indeed incredible, people in the path of it were advised to close windows and not go out if possible. Traffic was diverted away from the site and the trains were held up for a short while.

The building had originally been a bus depot, but had also been used as a clothing warehouse and was due to be demolished in the near future anyway. Someone has saved themselves a huge bill for the safe removal of asbestos roofing. It was in an area that had been partially cleared and there was little risk of it spreading. Residential areas were never in any danger and it was brought under control remarkably quickly for the size of it. It may have been used by 'yoofs' for illicit purposes but as that part of the site is fairly well fenced in, it's unlikely it was them that started it.

There was still a stink of burning in the air this morning.

Just to put it into place, as the crow flies, the fire was about a mile and a half away from Micca's house and my home.
