Subject: Song From 'Andy Griffith Show' Question
From: doris1@earthlink.com
Date: 29 Apr 99 - 10:33 PM

I was watching the old Andy Griffith Show today and they had a folk band on that was supposed to be a hillbilly family which they called the "Darlings". Anyway, they and Andy played a song called "Dooly" which was about a moonshiner and I thought it was really cool. So I'd like to find out more about it, like lyrics/music, so I could play it. So, any help would be...........ahhhhh helpful. Thanks, Mark

RE: DOOLEY...
There has been some discussion on the
BLUEGRASS NET about the amount of molasses...
ie...TON vs TUN [also a quantity of measurement]...
The original lyrics sheet could solve the discussion.

That group, "The Darlings," was, in real life, "The Dillards," and they are still out there, touring and playing bluegrass festivals, though not all of the original members are still together. (They are very good, too, and have dropped the hillbilly personna since the Andy Griffith show). Loretta

Looks like the Dillard's got their credit... They were the hottest LA Bluegrass band around in their time and slightly ahead of the times doing Bluegrass on national TV. Jack

Ah yes, the Old Andy Griffith Show...Saw one of those segments featuring the Dillards not long ago. It struck me how times, (or myself?) have changed. When I first saw that particular show many years ago, I thought it was NEAT! When I recently saw it the cynicism of age had crept in. While I still thoroughly enjoyed the music, the thought struck as to how these folks, evidently not the top of the social heap of Mayberry could afford all those fine instruments!

Banjer,

Not so very amazing when you think of it. Walk down the streets of any "Mayberry, USA" and you will see $30,000 bass boats parked in front of hovels. You just learn after awhile to put your money into the things which matter most to you. Don't we all do that to one degree or another? My guitar looks a hell of a lot better than that old Ford in the driveway!

Also bear in mind that it is the collectable market that has increased the value of those instruments to their current ridiculous level. An old Martin Guitar or Gibson Mandolin or Mastertone banjo sure didn't sell for anywhere near the thousands of dollars that they get now, even factoring in inflation. It drives me crazy that a lot of these instruments are now bought and sold as a commodities, often to be locked away and never played or to be G,C,Ded by some BMW driving, Hilfigger (gofigger) wearing collector. I would love to see some set up where a musician earns intsruments based on their ability to play them. Unfortunately my mediocre Mansfield 5 string and Yamaha guitar would be taken away and I would be given a shoe box and rubber bands.

The Andy Griffiths/Dillards thread reminds me that Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs show up on Beverly Hillbillies every now and then.

You all are right, the value has so inflated that which used to be relatively inexpensive entertainment. My Lord, Steve, if they were to award instruments by accomplishments I'm afraid I'd still be beating the dickens out of the bottom of an old coffee can with a wooden spoon!

Thank you so much for your help with the Andy Griffith show question.

I would like to thank everbody, as I enjoyed all the comments. I agree that Gibsons and the like are overpriced, especialy the new ones which are too often of poor quality anyway.

Anyway, thanks to all. Mark

As far as I know, the Kentucky Colonels with Roland and Clerence White did three episodes of the Andy Griffith Show before the Dillards did any.
