Mike R. sure put together a great collection of Bruce's songs. And Penny Lang's version of Come Across was superb. I always thought Come Across should have had the same kind of success on other artists' albums that Heart Like A Wheel and Louise did. Bruce has really good songs and also one of the finest voices I've heard through the years.

Thank you all. The show came as a surprise to me. I received a link to it from Mike R on November 22. I think Mike likely didn't talk to me about it beforehand because he knows I'd have begged off having anything from the "SSP" played on the air--not that I do or should have any control over that.

With luck I'll have some studio time in Montreal this trip and I hope to get a dozen songs recorded--voice and guitar, that's it. After years of dickin' around with electric instruments, and having determined late in life that for me they complicate what should be a fairly simple straight-forward process--that of recording one voice and one guitar--I will simply get the songs down. I don't really know what direction to take after that. I have two CD's worth of material that's new, and IMO they represent the 'best stuff' I've written. It isn't folk; it is acoustic 'kinda-rock'. However, I have taken my folkish-foundations and made them fundamental to this set of songs.

With deep humility, I wish to thank John Young for his very kind remark. Because the words have presented a problem for some listeners in the past (well, three of the seventeen, anyway) I will add them here. Also, John, the Mr isn't necessary, but thanks.

"Fool Like Me"

Scores of prophets growing old
Please take Elijah the rusted chains that hold
Poor Judas to his misery
It seems so obvious he needs sympathy
Of ancient history
And a fool like me

Lonesome lover lost his bride
Stopped his heart and so they called it suicide
Judged by pompous vanity
I guess they're right, but I have to disagree
'Cause if a fool be he
He's a fool like me

And care on the line
It feels good to talk with a friend of mine
If you gotta go
I'd like to be
To be the first to know

Pleasant dreams though twilight falls
It deserts the prison where the hobo's footsteps call
Prime ministers of treachery
Locked him up because he had no pedigree
But it matters not says he
He's a fool like me

I wrote your song just yesterday
And I tore it up because the song got in the way
Was just a way to let you see
Another chapter in a cloudy mystery
Of vagrant effigies
And a fool like me

"Locked him up because he had no pedigree"

Footnote (from Wikipedia):

'Pedigree (from the French, pied de grue, lit. 'crane's foot') is the name of the legal principle that allows a witness to testify as to his name and certain family details under the American and English common law concepts of evidence with no additional foundation. Otherwise, establishing the identity of the witness would waste much of the court (and the jury)'s time. Pedigree is, like many old rules of evidence, either a rule or an exception, depending upon how it is used.'

So much of this would not have been possible without the help of your missus and you, Amos. The only thing I can figure is that you and I have GOT to sit down for a week and write a few. But...

Bruce, I would have loved for that podcast to also include your old song "Rough Night In Jericho" and your newer song "Last Man Standing".

But I'm glad to know that more people are hearing those other wonderful songs of yours that are featured in that podcast. I can't pick a favorite...well maybe "Come Across To You" or "Plains of Jericho" or "I Sit and Count The Stars At Night" or "I Keep You In My Heart"...

Well, that goes to show you how difficult it is to choose which of your songs speaks to me.

Bruce, kudos to ya, and keep on keepin on!!!

Well I opened this thread hoping to learn some new fishing technique. Although I was unfamiliar with podcasting, I assumed it was another way to get the lure out there like flip casting. I couldn't find anything like that but what I did find was a radio program with some guy singin' and pickin' and all that. No fishing stuff of any kind. I mean that's okay because I could give less than a shit about fishing except for the cooking and eating part.

As far as the radio thing went, this Bruce guy seemed pretty good and all. I dunno' though 'cause you always have to keep an eye on that type since most of them are friggin' navel gazers. Now while this Murdoch seems okay, my advice would be to listen to him every chance you get to make sure he's not staring at his bellybutton! I like him but I hate to be disappointed so I'm gonna' do that myself.

Here's another thing though......I can't figure out why the hell Peace acts like he has something to do with the whole thing.   And then that comment to Amos about their combined ages being 12 decades or something? I don't see the big deal there since either one of them could assure what......maybe seven or eight or more individually? I do think Peace and Amos are probably adept at identifying navel gazers since both are generally staring at some anatomical part. Peace seems to have the same view as a colonoscopy camera whereas Amos has been unable to find his willie for over thirty years.

Anyway, I'd give this Murdoch character the benefit of the doubt and just enjoy what he does which is pretty damn good and hope he does more. Ignore anything Peace has to say......What the hell does he know?

Say, does anyone know anything about podcasting?

Spaw

Hi Peace, you'd enjoy Steve Earle's latest.."Washington Square Serenade"... i got the package with the DVD for $15 at Music World(they're shutting down 200 stores in Jan.) another casualty of downloading.. anyhow, the DVD lasts 32 min., interviews in the Village, where he now lives, and esp. live performances, voice and guitar/mandolin all mic-ed, at the funky Electric Ladyland Studio... really simple and solid... the CD is less rocky than his last couple of outings, but he explains all of that in the interview..

"Goodbye Guitar Town"

nice package all around....   see you later... R.

With the blessing of Mister Bruce (Peace) Murdoch, a privately produced CD of this broadcast is now available to Mudcat members who contribute $10.00 to the Mudcat maintenance fund. The CD has the songs and commentary divided into tracks, and some cleanup done on minor clicks and hisses from earlier media.

To get your copy of what may be a historic recording event:

1. Send $10.00 to Max.
2. Send me a PM with your name and address, affirming that you have completed step 1.

Regards,

Amos

Amos,

I don't want to throw water on the fire of the CD, but ethically and legally you need permission from several other parties besides Bruce.

I would suggest that you also secure permission from these folks and companies whose work may be protected under various laws before distributing the CD in exchange for money (even if it is as a donation to a worthy cause like Mudcat):

1) Mike Regenstreif
2) Bill Staines
3) Penny Lang
4) Red House Records
5) Borealis Records
6) Elektra Records
7) Radio Canada International
8) CKUT Radio.

I doubt that any of them would object, but securing permission is the right thing to do.

I'm not selling it, Sir Ham. I'm offering a copy of a radio broadcast, and I'm not getting paid to do it either, for a charitable cause.

But if it is going to raise hackles to do so, despite the fact that it was broadcast over air and over web, freely, then I can kibosh the whole idea just as easily. No-one has yet made their donations, although there have been inquiries. Anyone could download, edit and burn the CD for themselves without such permissions.

Let me check on your proposition with Mike and see how it stands.

I am happy to help the 'Cat, and I am happy to promote a rare talent like Bruce's, but in a few minutes of posting time, you have suddenly added a lot more hours of work to the whole idea than I am willing to spend on it right now.

I expect to have a dozen or so songs that are OK from the gig in Montreal. If it's OK with Amos I'll send them to him and he can do something similar and it will require no one's permisdsion but mine. If that's OK, then let's do it that way instead.

Amos,

I don't know the laws in the U.S., but in Canada you can legally record something off the radio (or a podcast) and copy it onto CD for your own personal use. You can legally copy CDs for your own personal use. No problem about that. You can get into hot water when going beyond personal use.

Don't get me wrong. I want everybody to hear the podcast. That's why I posted the link in the first place. But there are legal questions, and to my mind, ethical questions. Seeing Bruce's response to my raising the issue, I think he agrees.

And BTW, I myself have burned the podcast onto a CD for my own personal use and have played it four or five times already.

Bruce, though I'd love to have a Bruce Murdoch CD of your new songs to listen to sooner rather than later, I'm willing to wait until your CD is produced and then buy it.

With regard to donations to Mudcat, knowing how much you care about this forum, I bet you probably were going to donate some copies of your CD to the Mudcat auction anyway. And I bet they'll bring in more than the stated price of the CD.

All this to say, in my opinion, Bob Ryszkiewicz said it best:

Bruce,

It's not about my code of ethics. I told you what *I* think is the right thing to do ethically, and from what I understand, legally. But, what the hell, I'm not a lawyer, or a cop, and what guides me ethically is not necessarily what guides you ethically.

Don't do anything on my account. Make your own decision based on the information that's available to you. If you think making the CD available to someone who donates to Mudcat is the right thing to do, then do it.

Guys, if I had been using my head this situation would never have happened. Let's forget the idea. People can download and burn to a CD for themselves. We're talking about maybe 10 people wanting one of these things, and I see no point in any acrimony about it all. I'd hate it for there to be any animosity between Amos and C Ham over MY stupidity. Hi Kids!: Thoughts and Perspectives from a Wandering Mind...
Or, Hey, who asked you?

You must consider that, while Mudcat may have the FEEL of a "private village" or home away from home, that you are still dancing with the beast called THE INTERNET. If your curiosity is aroused, I suggest you read "The Long Tail" by the editor-in-chief of WIRED magazine.
Artists like Colby Caillat started out in MySpace, and due to the sheer power of something like 25,000,000 downloads, is currently running at #1 in the American Top 40.
I humbly suggest that our friend Peace, how shall I phrase this? Cover thy A($)($)...and realize that some guy in Mozambique(just outside of Dallas in Cyberspace...) taking a wee wee can still have an iPod or cell phone..

Don't let the same dog bite you twice...

I was under the impression that iTunes was getting 1.5 million downloads per day. After seeing Steve Jobs at MacWorld 2007, I realized my info. was off, just a lttle bit. It's 5 million, that's PER DAY(and $.99/song) and if you have a calculator, you've probably figured out that it's a LOT.
Oh yeah, they have about 62% market share, which means that I am aware of at least 350 digital download sites, and there are probably way more. Amazon.com just started taking on mp3's, etc.
And, as far as I know, digital downloads STILL only represent 10% of total sales after you add CD's into the equation. And then, there's YouTube...
So what do these ravings from an old FolkSlinger represent? A call to smell the coffee...Wakey Wakey, Achey Breaky. (What the flag is he talking about?)
The year is not 1967. Music is being bought and distributed in new ways. Your choices?
Get informed. They say my people(The Poles) used to go up against tanks while carrying swords and riding horses. Courageous..but guess who won?
I think you will be shocked at how many people think the music that you(the universal you) produce is more than O.K. And while 10 people on Mudcat may want it, if the Hit Goddess should cast her grace and smile upon you, and you do a "James Blunt"(Your Beautiful) please remember, they don't call it The Music BUSINESS for nothing...

Unless, of course, you LIKE giving away $$$. If that applies to YOU, my mailbox is open, 24/7...

(Written with the deepest consideration and concern. Respect to all...)

bob
