What famous persons can you think of who are known by a single name -whether that single name is their first name, last name, or nickname?

I'll share a few names in my next post.

Please join in this list making if you wanna.

I immediately thought of a famous folk singer, but since a Mudcatter is using that name as his screen name, I won't post that one.

The next name I thought of was Trane or Coltrane.

"John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967), nicknamed Trane, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Although recordings of his work from as early as 1946 exist, Coltrane's recording career did not begin in earnest until 1955. From 1957 onward he recorded and produced dozens of albums, many of them not released until years after his death. He achieved extraordinary popularity, while also responding to a religious awakening that has made him a source of spiritual inspiration.

Coltrane has been credited with reshaping modern jazz and being the predominant influence on successive generations of saxophonists. Like tenor saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Ben Webster before him, Coltrane fundamentally altered expectations for the instrument".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Coltrane

-snip-

Now I have to confess that most of the time Coltrane is too deep for me... I usually prefer vocal music. But there are some Coltrane recordings that were favorites among the crowd that I hung with in the late 1960s. Trane's records were part of the background music to the discussions we had about male/female relationships, and making the world a better place. Trane's records was also music that we listened to "raise our consciousnes".

I have good memories of that time. And Coltrane's music is part of those memories.

Yeah, but we aren't famous...Well, there are some famous people among us, but most of us {including me} aren't famous.

That said, I see Spaw added his name to this list right off the bat.

So that means he's famous-for something or the other...

It occurs to me that, though they are associated with particular famous people, some single names may be better known or more readily identified with that famous person among certain populations than others.

By "Malcolm", I mean "Malcolm X". And by Martin, I mean "Martin Luther King, Jr."

Hector
Homer -- actually quite a lot of Greeks & Romans
Alexander - the Great does not constitute a last name!
Augustus
Nero
Caesar
Lincoln - not a Greek or a Roman or even a Ford
Kurasawa - also not a Greek or Roman
Che
Fidel
Sonny   - Cher's friend
Chuck - as in Norris- also not a Greek or a Roman but he did conquer
         both empires.
Daley - if you're from Chicago no need to ask!

This is fun!!!

Jim Krause's list is interesting, because

John
Paul
George
Ringo

only works as a set. If you simply said "I saw Paul on TV yesterday," or "one of my favorite songs is by John," no-one would know who you meant.

Ringo, of course, is different. "My favorite caveman movie is the one with Ringo in it" is perfectly comprehensible!

Hi,

There are quite a few monarchs with nicknames like "the Great", etc. But, though these aren't last names, they are indeed names, so I guess those people would not go by a single name.

"Dylan" might be company dependent. Is this Dylan Thomas, or Bob Dylan? (Sorry, apparently I "ain't got no culture.")

Einstein

Hm, having played chess, to me
Euwe, Capablanca, Karpov, Kasparov, Spasski, Philidor, Morphy, Staunton, Lasker, and Botvinik are all single name people, but to others this might be different.

Likewise from other fields of interest,
Ampère, Amundsen, Archimedes, Aristotle, Bach, Beethoven, Bell, Benz, Buhda, Caesar, Chaplin, El Cid, Copernicus, Dante, Darwin, Debussy, Defoe, Diesel, Disney, Donatello, Doppler, Dürer, Edison, Eli, Engels, Escher, Euclid, Euler, Fermat, Fibonnacy, Ford, Galilei, Gawain, Gödel, Goethe, Van Gogh, Greystoke, Grieg, Gutenberg, Hertz, Hitchcock, Hyawata, Huxley, Huygens, Isolde, Kafka, Lancelot, Lee, Lenin, Lineaus, Lorenz, Luther, Mandelbrot, Marx, Matisse, Mendelev, Mendelsohn, Mengele, Michelangelo, Mohamed, Morded, Morse, Mozart, Mozes, Murphy, Nansen, Nelson, Newton, Nietsche, Ohm, Oppenheim, Orwell, Pascal, Pasteur, Picasso, Pocahontas, Poe, Polansky, Plato, Pythagoras, Ravel, Rembrandt, Ruth, Sandokan, Simenon, de Sitter, Socrates, Sophocles, Spinoza, Stalin, Stoker, Tolkien, Tolstoi, Tristan, Tsjaikovski, Volt, Wagner, Washington, Watt, Wells, and Zelazny.
(Was much more spontaneous than it looks, but I had to alphabetise them, as I had some doubles.)

Where I live this would also include
Brugman, Bartjens, Kok, Den Uyl, Lely, Aafjes, Van Gulik, Havank, Koster, Vance, Spijker, Fokker, Drees, Troelstra, Cals, Schenk, Multatuli, Verkerk, and Van Dale.

Of course, there's a large number of people that are know by their title plus one name. Also, there's a large number of duos that go by only two names, or brothers that together go only by one name. But those strictly speaking would be on other lists.

One more single name:

Thanks for the wide range of single names of famous people!

Here's some other single name singers/performers that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

R&B:

Beyonce'

Babyface

Usher

Nelly

Brandy

Omarion

Michel'le

Mya

Shanice

De'Angelo

Hip-Hop:
Hammer {Mc Hammer}

Ashanti

Common {full stage name Common Sense}

Dre {but which one?}

Dancehall Reggae:
Shabba {Shabba Ranks}

Patra

Shaggy

and a whole lot more!

-snip-

You'll notice that these names aren't in alphabetical order, unlike the impressive, alphabetized list that a certain Mudcatter posted upthread. I won't mention that poster's name, but it starts with a "M" and nexts to that letter comes a "y".

Go'n with ya bad* self!

I guess they'd be considered part of the "Pop" music genre, but I'm not sure.

Speaking of music, I could have sworn that I had intended this thread to be in the music/folk culture section of Mudcat threads.

But it's all good,'cause I like to muddy the line {so to speak} by adding music links and/or lyrics to BS threads whenever possible.

For instance, Dan Keding gave us the name "Odetta".

I just love Odetta.

Hey, whadda ya expect? I have a Virgo rising and my Mars is in Virgo. According to astrology, those sign placements mean that I like to make lists [check].

According to astrology, those sign placements also mean that I can be very nit picky critical. That's what the astrology charts say. But it ain't necessarily so.

Umm, well, maybe, sometimes, not often but every little once in a while when the spirit moves me...Okay okay.

I'll stop with the comments about other people's entries.

But I didn't mean any harm 'cause I'm a Sagittarius sun with my Jupiter and Mercury in Sagittarius and an Aquarius moon.

[Now that I've inserted some astrology into this thread, "I'm gonna exit stage right"].

Btw, that "Exit stage right" saying is associated with a cartoon character with a single name. Who knows that name?

gnu, in the context of the name "Saint Patrick", the word "Saint" is a title.

When I started this thread I was thinking of famous people who are known by just one name.

Famous people has been expanded to "famous characters" which still fits the spirit and intent of this thread.

My definition for "one name" is a single name/nickname that isn't prefaced by {with?} a title.

I appreciate your post, but if we open up this list to all those famous people whose first name or last name is prefaced by {with?} a title, there goes the neighborhood.

Just kidding about that neighborhood statement. After all, our neighborhood is already mud ;o)

This Gemini rising Cancerian also likes lists. I- er - ahem (coughs politely) - er - have books of lists. THERE. I've said it. (I'll put the jokwe I've just remembered on the jokw thread.)

Mahler, Beethoven, Gershwin,Rodgers (I may be a while), Kern, Wilde, Shaw (positive), Schubert, Elgar, Swarbrick, Carthy, Keats, AUTOLYCUS (notice no-one mentioned him), Rossini, Chaucer, Harmer, Lipatti, Patti, Caruso, ("'I can't go on. I must go on.'"), [Must you]
Anyway, any number of composers, authors, performers. Most (reasonably) famous people are known by one name.

Btw, i know, from the above lists and mentions, more than one Churchill, Attila, Hector, homer,Alexander, Sonny,Dylan - ah, just re-read thread title, and withdraw my comment (without crossing it out, just in case.)

Now if it were people who in some sense have only one name............................................

The distinction needs to be made between:

<> people who were known by their complete name at the height of their fame but who became one-namers in retrospect

and

<> people who always had a one-name professional moniker.

EXAMPLES

PELE, for example, I think always was known by that name in his visible career. LANCE (Armstrong), on the other hand, didn't become a one-namer until almost the end of his career, and he certainly never called himself by that one-word name professionally.

Example: CHER was Cher's official stage name: picture the marquee in Vegas. CELINE is probably still billed on the marquee as CELINE DION. wE PRETEND TO BE ON FAMILIAR TERMS WITH OUR STARS NOWADAYS, SO IN CONVERSATION ONE MIGHT REFER TO celine (SORRY CAPSLOCK)

One might refer now informally to CELINE, meaning Celine Dion, but she doesn't bill herself that way like MADONNA bills herself by just one name.

Sports heroes, ditto. Michael Jordan would never have referred to himself by one name professionally. But sportscasters nowadays, referring to a great of the past, often do.

Ditto Einstein. The dropping of the first name is a sign of respect for the magnitude of the achievement, but he didn't bill himself that way.

Ditto Letterman and Leno. You know who I mean, but you also know they don't sign checks or contracts that way. I bet Madonna does though, and I bet she had to go to court to make it legal, too.

The only one I can think of immediately that I don't think I saw mentioned is the famous cross-dresser:

"Lassie"

For generic "group names" there's (phonetically):

damyankee

damdemocrat

and godamrepublican

but that's probably stretching the concept, although they are recognized one word "names" where I've been recently.

"Dylan" isn't company-dependent. Dylan Thomas is always referred to by both given names. Bob Dylan is always referred to by my acquaintances as "Mr. Zimmerman". "Dylan" by itself is understood to be the rabbit on the "Magic Roundabout".

How about:

"Branagh"
"Leadbelly"

Churchill

Lassie - same thing as horses
Garfield - ditto for cartoon/comic strip characters

In the storytelling world most everyone knows who you mean when you say 'Donald' or 'Jackie' or 'Harley' or 'Elizabeth' - there are several 'one namers' around in that world.

Some of these examples are a bit feeble - sure there are cases of people whose first name is forgotten by most of the people who remember them at all, but anyone who wanted to know about the origin of the Radon-Nikodym Theorem could find out who Radon and Nikodym were easily enough.

Mantovani is more like it - Wikipedia found his first names, but he never used them in public that I know of and even the official Mantovani website doesn't mention them.

Sukarno is the real deal. He only had one name.

From: Azizi

My initial sentence to this thread is "What famous persons can you think of who are known by a single name -whether that single name is their first name, last name, or nickname?"

Given that sentence, it's possible that a person's full name could be known. However, I was {am} more interested in folks helping to compile a list of famous people who are most often known by one name or nickname/stage name.

As I mentioned, this subject has been expanded to include famous fictional characters. I'm cool with that. As a matter of fact, I asked a question upthread about the single name of a fictitious character who is known for the saying "Exit. Stage right". Nobody's posted that answer yet. I know the answer, but I thought it would add to the fun to ask game questions.

This thread list also includes examples of single names of real animals/living creatures and fictitious animals. Since this thread is all in fun, that's cool with me too [not that it matters a hill of beans whether whatever someone posts on this thread is cool with me or not].

So in the spirit of fun & games, here's some additional Single Name Basis questions:

1. What's the name of The Lone Ranger's sidekick?

2. What's the name of the American television detective who likes lollipops {suckers}?

3. What are the names of the two Sesame Street roomates whose characters are loosely based on the television show "The Odd Couple?"

4. What is the name of the black caped wearing sword fighting American television character?

5. What's the name of the big dragon who lived by the sea and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee?

6. What are the names of the three folk singers who sang the song referred to in question #5?

7. What is the name of the Norse god of thunder?

8. What is the names of Shakespeare's two star crossed lovers?

9. What is the name of the Roman god of love and sex?

10.What is the single name of Captain Kirk's second in command?

-snip-

If you post an answer to a question or questions listed above, please include the number of the question you are responding to, or cut & paste the question itself.

Additional questions are welcome. If you add a question, don't number it as that might get confusing. Instead, it would be most helpful if anyone responding to un-numbered questions would provide the question first.

Hopefully, if people feel like playing, this might work as well as the questions/responses on these threads from 2006:

11. What is the single name of the soulful singer who sang about the sweetest taboo?

Stu, Cupid was the response to question #9 that I was originally thinking of, though Venus is also correct. In Roman mythology, Venus is Cupid's mother. But I can't remember who's Cupid's father...

??

Also, Stu thanks for your list of single name folks & characters.
I recognize all the names on that list except Offa and Segovia.

??

And does "Thatcher" refer to Margaret Thatcher, the UK's first female Prime Minister?

I guess the last names of most politicians could be on this list, though Senator Hillary Clinton is known by her first name and not her last name. I suppose that's because the last name "Clinton" is too closely associated with her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

As well as the already-mentioned Garbo, studio bosses decided Karloff was well enough known that only his (assumed) name need be used on posters. I think they did the same with Lugosi, too.

BTW, on the horror movie theme, I think that Nosferatu (in George's message, 01 Dec 07 - 06:34 AM) refers to a date in the calendar, rather than the character. The vampire in that film was called Graf Orlock.

The inclusion of the deity names such as Venus and Cupid opens the door to the addition of thesingle names of other gods and goddesses throughout the world.

I confess that I googled information about Venus and found this website: http://www.crystalinks.com/venusmyth.html

Here's a sentence from that website :

"In Greek mythology, Aphrodite was the goddess of love (equivalent to the Roman Venus, Egyptian Goddess Isis, the Phoenician Astarte and the Babylonian Ishtar)".

Further along in that article are these two sentences:

"The goddess [Venus]loved to pamper herself and cultivate her beauty. Her symbol represents the hand-held vanity mirror that Venus used to admire her beauty".

-snip-

Those sentences interested me because a hand held vanity mirror is also one of the symbols for Oshun {Osun}* the Yoruba {Nigeria, West Africa} goddess of love.

*pronounced oh-SHOON {at least in the USA}.

Though the name of the book escapes me, I recall reading that the Yoruba gods & goddesses and the Greek gods and goddesses had their source in the Egyptian mythologies. This hand held vanity mirror symbol is just one example of the similarities between the pantheons of three cultures.

Here's some information on Oshun:

"Oshun, the Yoruban Goddess of love, delights in the creation of beauty and art, sensual delights and self-adornment. Her symbols are mirrors, jewelry, honey, golden silks and feather fans. Creativity in decorating home and temple is a way of honoring Oshun, who will bless any beautiful space created in Her honor. There is no object so common that Oshun will not appreciate more if it is made artistic and pleasing to the eye. Creativity in dress and self-adornment please her as well, and when Oshun is pleased, her blessings know no limits".
http://www.lunaea.com/goddess/creativity/oshun.html

-snip-

"MORE ABOUT OSHUN
Patroness of rivers and the bloodstream, the Nigerian goddess (also brought to Brazil and Cuba) was honoured as the goddess of love and sensuality.

She wears seven bracelets, a mirror at her belt, river water in her pot, and is accompanied by her peacock and cricket.

She is depicted as on old wise woman sad at the loss of her beauty, or, alternatively is shown as a tall, coffee-skinned woman absolutely comfortable with her sexuality."
http://www.goddess.com.au/goddesses/Oshun.htm

Here's a YouTube video of a song & dance dedicated to Oshun:

However, Stu got that answer correct and he correctly answered the question about the soulful singer {at least to my knowledge Eartha Kitt didn't sing this song}.

When I asked what is the single name of the soulful singer who sang about the sweetest taboo, I was thinking of Sade {whose name is pronounced SHAH-day.

Hi Rowan.

It's true that I was only thinking of the names of real people when I started this thread. But I've no problem whatsoever with the fact that the list has expanded to include the single names of deities, fictitious people, animals, and other living creatures.

Some of these names are unfamiliar to me-such as Bennelong and Kylie. I suppose they are based in Australia?

I'd prefer it if people would provide some info about names that they list which aren't well known. But then again, on an international forum such as Mudcat, how would a person know if the name{s} that he or she posts are familiar to readers of this thread?

I was jesting Azizi.
But,
Bennelong was the first Port Jackson Aborigine to become part of the imposed British colonial structure. The spit of land on which the Sydney Opera House sits is Bennelong Point. The House of Reps seat occupied until recently by John Howard (see the thread on Oz Prime Minister loses seat in election) is named Bennelong.

Kylie, she of the (apparently) callipygous bum, is Kylie Minogue. I gather she has a reputation as a pop icon of some standing.

Rog, Isambard Brunel is the person who made cast iron and steel construction all the go in 19th century Britain. A vague memory indicates he had some connection with the Eiffel Tower, constructed entirely of cast iron in such a way as to impose compression stresses (which cast iron can handle) and avoiding tension stresses (which it can't) on all the structural elements.

Cheers, Rowan

Well, I don't have any sense of humor {or "humour", if you prefer}, so I wouldn't know.

But, seeing as how nobody else formally added any more questions to this thread, and seeing as how this thread itself has been stuck on #97 all night, I figure that this Single Name Basis thread's been waitin for me to give it some attention-that is-to add some more questions in hopes that somebody-anybody-will answer them. And so I will.

{Btw, how's that for a run on sentence? I think it's pretty good, if I do say so myself}.

Imma re-start the counting at #11 even though I think there was another #11. If so, this one will be 11b.

But before I do, Sorcha probably forgot that she asked this question:
"That whatshisname male model..lotsa muscles...he has posed for 'heart throb' book covers.....not Fabian...but close maybe? Fazio? Help!"

But, just in case you're waiting with bated breath for the answer, Sorcha, you were sooo close. The answer is Fabio.

And now, as someone without a single name was known to say, in his own imicable way "On with the show!"

11. What's the single name of Santa Claus' red nosed reindeer?

12. What is the single name of the orge who stars in the Academy awared winning film of the same name which spoofs fairy tales?

14. What's the single name of the man who Johhny Otis sang about in his song about hand jive?

15. What's the single name of this 1955 record by Chuck Berry in which the singer asked the woman {whose name is the same name as the record title} why can't she be true?

16. This single name is both the title of a classic children's novel and the name of its lead character-an orphaned Swiss girl who prefers to live in the mountains with her grandfather, but is taken by her aunt to the city to live with a family who has a young daughter in a wheelchair. What's the name of this book & this girl's name? [I tried to make this question shorter, but this is the best I could do].

17. Speaking of books, what are the single names of the boy and girl whose series of books were "fun" to read for many Americans anyway in the early years of elementary school. [Sorry if folks outside of the USA don't know this series]

18. What were the single names of the dog and cat who were pets of the aforementioned boy & girl and their little sister Baby Sally?

19. What is the single name of the very popular Swahili love song whose title translates as "My angel" and whose lyrics in English begins "My angel, my angel, I love you, my angel". Hint: This song's name is also the name of an Indian supermodel and a Bollywood actress.

20. What is the single name of the novel by Sir Walter Scott in which the knight {whose name is the title of the story} saves the life of a beautiful Jewish woman who is accused of being a witch?

"Forgive my ignorance Bert, but who is Brunell"
Isombard Kingdom Brunel, English Engineer (1806-59)
Responsible for Clifton and Hungerford Suspension Bridges and the steamship The Great Britain, among other great feats of engineering.
Immortalised in a verse of Tom Lenihan's song about poitín (illicit Irish whiskey) 'Paddy's Panacea'.

Come guess me this riddle, what beats pipes and fiddle?
What's stronger than mustard and milder than cream?
What best whets your whistle, what's clearer than crystal?
What's sweeter than honey and stronger than steam?
What will make the dumb talk, what will make the lame walk?
What's the elixer of life and philosopher's stone?
What helped Mr Brunnell to dig the Thames Tunnel?
Sure wasn't it whiskey from old Inishowen?

Well, Azizi, I remember Rudolph and Trigger, never read Heidi, can't remember reading Ivanhoe (although I lived in the Melbourne version of it for a while), so any heroines escape me, and I think your "orge" might be Shrek. I'll pass on the rest.

Cheers, Rowan

Congratulations Rowan & Stu!

You both gave the correct answers for these questions:

11. What's the single name of Santa Claus' red nosed reindeer?-Ruldoph

13. What is the single name of the horse that television cowboy Roy Roger's rode? Trigger

-Heidi

20. What is the single name of the novel by Sir Walter Scott in which the knight {whose name is the title of the story} saves the life of a beautiful Jewish woman who is accused of being a witch?-Ivanhoe

**
Rowan gave the correct answer to this additional question:

12. What is the single name of the orge who stars in the Academy awared winning film of the same name which spoofs fairy tales?-Shrek

**

Stu gave the correct answers for these additional questions:

14. What's the single name of the man who Johhny Otis sang about in his song about hand jive? Willie [and the Handjive]

15. What's the single name of this 1955 record by Chuck Berry in which the singer asked the woman {whose name is the same name as the record title} why can't she be true? Maybelline

**

These questions still are waiting for someone to post the correct response:

Also, someone can get "extra credit" by posting the single name of the woman who is referenced in the question about Ivanhoe.

Anyone game?

Okay, here's some more clues for questions #17 & #18:

The series of books I'm referring to were used in schools to teach children how to read and they usually have the the word "Fun" in the title.

**

Also, here's a clue for the extra credit question about the single name of the woman referred to in the Ivanhoe question: This old testament Biblical female name is the same as the title & name of the girl who is the lead character in the children's novel about Sunnybrook Farm.

With regard to question #19, I may have mistaken this term of endearment for an actual single name, though it has sometimes been given as a personal female name in the USA {I've seen given to African Americans more than any other racial/ethnic group}. But it is also the name of a an Indian supermodel and a Bollywood actress.

And since, I may have goofed by including this term of endearment as a single name, I'm gonna post that answer-right-now:

19. What is the single name of the very popular Swahili love song whose title translates as "My angel" and whose lyrics in English begins "My angel, my angel, I love you, my angel". Hint: This song's name is also the name of an Indian supermodel and a Bollywood actress.-"Malaika"

Here's the entry from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaika [I've placed the information about the song first]

"Malaika, which means "angel" in Swahili, was a song first recorded by Kenyan musician Fadhili William and his band Jambo Boys in 1960. Authorship of the song is often attributed to Fadhili William, but that is somewhat disputed.

It was later re-recorded at Equator Sound Studios by the British-born Kenyan music promoter Charles Worrod, who marketed the ballad to eventually becoming an internationally acclaimed song. The song went on to be popularised by international artists such as Helmut Lottie, Hep Stars, Rocco Granata, Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, Pete Seeger, Boney M and Angélique Kidjo".

"Malaika" is also a spider genus (Phyxelididae) found in South Africa.

"Malaika" is also the name of a best selling music group in South Africa.

-snip-

The single name of the Bollywood actress/supermodel is Malaika Arora Khan

Here's the lyrics to the song "Malaika":

MALAIKA
{Fadhili William}

Malaika, nakupenda Malaika
Malaika, nakupenda Malaika
Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio
Nashindwa na mali sina, we,
Ningekuoa Malaika
Nashindwa na mali sina, we,
Ningekuoa Malaika

Kidege, hukuwaza kidege
Kidege, hukuwaza kidege
Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio
Nashindwa na mali sina, we
Ningekuoa kidege
Nashindwa na mali sina, we
Ningekuoa kidege

Pesa zasumbua roho yangu
Pesa zasumbua roho yangu
Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio
Ningekuoa Malaika
Nashndwa na mali sina, we
Ningekuoa Malaika

ANGEL

Angel, I love you angel
What should I do, your lover
I am defeated by money
I don't have any
I would marry you, angel

Money is troubling my soul

Little bird
I always dream of you little bird

That website adds this comment:

"This remains one of the Hep Stars' fans
favorite songs. There are many inaccuracies
in other versions out there, these are the
correct and complete lyrics. The Hep Stars
didn't sing all the verses. Thanks to the

Brazilian athletes (soccer, basketball, etc.) customarily assume one-word names at the beginning of their professional careers. Those who become famous worldwide (or indeed anywhere outside Brazil) are no different in this regard than any of their lesser-known teammates and other compatriots.

Historical persons from the distant-enough past are also one-word-named by default; that is, they never (to our collective knowledge) had second names to begin with.

I think the most meaningful answers here are names of real people (not ficitonal character or cartoon animals) who (1) become mega-famous and (2) have relatively distinctive first names to begin with, and who therefore can become instantly recognizable by first-name-only (or in some cases, last-name-only).

One fairly prominent musical artist, someone I actually used to know in person, would seem to qualify:

Lucinda

I knew her as Cindy Williams, and as a frighteningly talented teenage prodigy. Around that time, the movie American Grafitti came out and one of the actresses, also named Cindy Williams, emerged into the limelight. Cindy went into a bit of a pout: "Someone else is gettin' famous with my name!"

Not long afterward, I spotted a utility bill at her apartment addressed to "Lucinda Williams." I told her she should use her full name; after all, her old man was a poet and her folks presumably knew what they were doing when they gave her such a euphonious name. I even predicited (correctly!) that by being Lucinda, she might very well become plenty famous enough by that one name alone.

"Naw, I hate that name ~ sounds like an old lady!"

Last time I saw her (1973? 74?), she hadn't relented and was still Cindy. She apparently changed her mind and her name by the time she moved to Austin or shortly thereafter, and defintitely before recording her first albom.

A lot of famous people become recognizable by their last names only (Shakespeare, Einstein), but we generally know them by first-and-last name ~ not quite the same thing as first-names-onlies like Cher or Madonna, whose last names were never part of their public personna, or even like Beyonce or Kobe or Kareem, each of whom gradually came to the point where their last names were no longer necessary to identify them.
