Kendall contracted a strep throat at the beginning of the week. the infection travelled down to his vocal cords, always vulnerable after the radiation treatment a few years ago and, by Tuesday morning he couldn't swallow, even a sip of water. I took him to the ER and they admitted him, put him on a drip with steroids to reduce the inflammation, antibiotics to stop the infection and sugar saline to re-hydrate him.

i left for the UK on Wednesday afternoon, fully expecting that he would be sprung from the hospital Thursday. However, the angina that has been troubling him for the past couple of months flared up, partially because of the infection, partially because he couldn't get any real rest in hospital (aggravated by the deaf patient across the hall who wouldn't use headphones and insisted on the tv being on at full blast!)

I got this email from his daughter today.

"Dad asked me to email you with the latest information.
Based on this afternoon's cardiac enzyme test, Dad is still in Mercy Hospital. They are planning on doing a stress test in the morning, and, based on that, he will likely be transferred to Maine Medical Center to have a coronary stent placed in the bypass graft that has blocked off.
The great news is that they have called in Dr.John Love, one of my very favorite cardiologists.....he's not just an excellent physician but a good man...and he's been a fan of Dad's for years!! Maine Med is one of the top 100 cardiac hospitals in the country. He'll be in the best of hands. They are also controlling his throat pain which is still lessening. He's able to eat and drink quite well.
I just got off the phone with Andy. Dad is surrounded by wonderful friends and family and he's concerned that you're going to be distressed about all of this happening with you away. I promise we'll keep you posted as things happen. We fully expected him to go home today, but Dad said he's been preparing for this since he found out that that artery was blocked. I'm going in tomorrow morning to keep an eye on things and will let you know as soon as I know anything.

Right now I'm staying put as I know that he will be more upset if I go home. He does have a lot of good local support, for which I give many thanks, but I know that the weight of the Mudcat will be of great help as well.

The room on the third floor was noisy but the food was good. The cardiac unit is quieter (relatively speaking) but the food sucks!

LOL. I spoke to Kendall this morning, about 6.30am - checked first with the desk to make sure he was awake! He says that they now say they won't do the stress test as his protein levels are coming down (this new ward is a lot quieter and I think that was the main part of the problem) and, if things continue that way, they may let him loose today.

I'm sure that when he sees this thread it will cheer him up considerably. Thank you for all your good wishes - it means a lot to me as well.

There has been at least one case I know of where family members kept getting it over and over until they had the dog checked and treated. As we all know, dogs will lick ANYthing, and while you may not give a big wet one to your dog, your dog doesn't share your inhibitions.

They had him on a Heparin drip overnight and are going to manage everything with meds at this point. My brother-in-law should have him home by now.

My sister, Deb, and I scolded him last night because everytime he goes in for 1 thing 4 others pop up. Hopefully we can put an end to that trend this time.

Mary, the "duck" is in the sun room. He insisted I "get it the hell outta here" when we left last night.

Kendall's daughter has just emailed me to say that he's home from hospital and they have arranged for him to have someone in the house to watch over him. It seems he probably had a very mild heart attack and he has had his meds doubled, leaving him very lethargic. The pain meds he's taking are also making him, to quote his daughter, 'loopy'. Looks like he will be taking it very easy for a while!

Not likely Amos - she keeps on embarrassing him by telling him how cute he is!

I just phoned home - spoke to his daughter, Deb, who says that he looks very well but is very tired. I did speak to him as well but he hasn't much voice with all the problems and has been told to rest it. He's glad to be home and will be taking it very easy for a few days at least. He sees his cardiologist next week to see how things are and right now his daughters are working out who will go with him to that meeting.

All his ladies there are making sure that he is well looked after while I'm away, which is a real blessing. I still feel that I should be there but he doesn't want me to cut short my UK time and my family have looked forward to my visit.

I was at the Morse Christmas Dinner last year. Becca you and I have to sit down and discuss the Sullivan Family Feasts. Honest - your family is normal in comparison.

An update: I drove in slippery snowy conditions (with multiple accidents caused by A**Holes who don't know that it is best to slow down while the roads are icy) to Free Range Lobster where I was scheduled to pick up haddock and Maine Shrimp for the Captain. On my way the cell phone rang twice but I couldn't drive and dig in my purse for it at the same time so I drove on to Chez Morse knowing full well it was Kendall calling wondering where his dinner was.

When I arrived I got to hear that he was "not hungry" because the meds had killed his appetite. I did not dare ask why he kept calling me on the cell phone.

The boy and I went out and played with snowballs while Deb started his dinner. He wanted us all out of there and I can understand it. Too many people for too long - he is aching for quiet and privacy.

Lethargic? NOT! He picked up Yukon Jack (whose button I had pushed) and flung the warbling woodsman clear down the hall. Kendall's back!

Freakin' Amazing! I take a day off and return to find this somewhat fizzled emergency. I mean I'm glad the emergency part has fizzled out but when arriving late to a thread like this one, I have to learn to skip to the end quickly before reading all the posts in between.

Sorry to report that the cost to manufacture the Amish-Australian Pitchfork Moustache Tuner (including the "Gordon Bok Special Cheesy-Stache Edition") has forced me to cease all production. Well, that, and a pair of lawsuits brought on by the Australian Government and the High Council of the Ohio-Pennsylvania Amish Clans. I guess they were just pissed that I was trying to use them in name only as a marketing tool. The Aussies settled for a round of beers but the Amish turned out to be real pricks about the whole thing.

I hope the songbooks went well because there were sure as hell no royalties on the moustache tuner. If the songbooks sold it was probably because of the free fan. Damn nice fan actually. Without them the songbooks would have bombed. Its a piss poor song book if it can't sing and try as I might, I couldn't get mine to utter even the littlest ditty............oughta' just call it a lyrics and music book because as that its pretty damn good and worth the money.

Anyway, I did check the Gordon Bok Website. They still have plenty of songbooks it seems and lots of cd's as well...always nice at Christmas. Sadly though, the fans are no where to be seen......***sigh***..........Seemed like a great promo to me.

Also, I see there is a section called "Gordon Bok Woodcarvings." What's up with that? Seems like he's gotten into whittlin' in a big way and there are some photos of various chunks of wood that he's apparently gouged out and cut on some.

If I were you Kendall, I'd try to get Bok to start up the fan give-away again. Really a nice fan with that special automatic switch that turns on toward morning.

I just spoke to Kendall, he's home and insisted on being on his own last night. He says that he had a good night's sleep which has helped.

His throat still hurts and he's on antibiotics to clear the infection and pain killers as well. His heart meds have been doubled and he's feeling very drowsy as a result, but that just means he ain't going to start trying to do too much too fast.

Mary's going in to take Seamus for a walk and his daughter will pop in to check on him and see if he needs any errands running.

I'm feeling a lot happier right now and relaxing a bit more, although I think I'll be relieved to get back home and check him out for myself. In the meantime there's a charming seven year old boy who, it seems, has been counting down the days until his Nanny visits...............

Seamus was glad to see me and sang all the way to Willard beach where he romped and swam and chased and goofed until he almost fell down. A man walking bu said "That's one worn out Lab." Seamus led me to the exit so I know he had enough. Now he is nestled into Kendall's easy chair and taking a nap. He will spend the night with me.

I thought Kendall might like him for company but he said the damn dog skulked off to Jcqui's room and only came out to eat and pee. Poor baby, misses his Mommy.

Tami is home tomorrow. Another romp on the beach and I will return the Beast to his lair along with some groceries.

I spoke to Kendall on Messenger today. His voice is a little stronger but he's still quite tired and his throat is still uncomfortable, although the antibiotics have started kicking in so that should ease fairly well from now on.

He sees his cardiologist on Thursday and his daughter will be going with him - she's worked in hospitals and knows the questions to ask etc. She will report back to me. I've talked to Kendall and to Elaine and we all agree that it will probably be sensible to have the stent put in as medication just doesn't seem to be doing the trick. However, that can wait until I get back home.

I'm more relaxed, being spoilt rotten by my daughter and getting lots of love and attention from my wonderful grandson.

Best wishes Kendall from me and Tawmmie. We will keep you in our thoughts. I can't help but remember the story of the elderly gentleman recovering in the hospital. When a visitor came by he found the old fellow sitting in a chair with two gorgeous nurses (one on either side) taking care of his every need. The guy began leaning to one side and the nurse on that side quickly grabbed him and helped him back up. Then he started to fall forward and the other nurse caught him and pushed him back up straight. "Wow!, they sure take good care of you here in the hospital," said the visitor. "Yeah," said the old man, "but they won't let me fart."

Light Brigades were specially trained in night fighting and carried torches into battle. After encountering initial successes against Buddhist Monks they were assigned to battalions fighting against the Curley Pow Warriors in Crimea. On the night of September 15th they devastated the entire Daintey Davey Division, setting fire to their curley pows and sending them running in flaming retreat across the battlefield with the Light Brigade in chase. The "blunder" oft referred to was that the Light Brigade followed too closely. When the flaming Curley Pow Warriors stumbled through an unseen fourth dimensional time warp encountering a future supply dump of the Nazis in WWII, the whole place blew up killing the remaining Daveys but also a goodly number of the Light Brigade as well.

I hope this has been helpful and puts an end to this fuckin' thread.

Anyone having anything they wish to donate to insure that Kendall isn't left bottomless please say so.

I will lead off the Collection To Bottom Out Kendall (CTBOK) with one dozen of those screw lids that are used in home canning. Not the flat ones with the seal, the ones that screw down the one with the seal. NB: some might be just a little bit slightly rusted and/or contain remnants of a jar's former contents.

Kendall willbe in my prayers every day, several times a day!

In Reb of 1994, I was afflicted with something very similar and I can assure you it's very serious.

I wasn't feeling very well when I woke up that day but I had to go to Jack Kirby's funeral (one of the holy trinity of Comic Book Artists, the other 2 being Gil Kane and Will Eisner) on Julie Schwartz' behalf since he was snowed in back in New York. As the day progressed I started feeling worse but I went to the funeral anyway and just kept popping excedrin for the fever. By the time the funeral was over, I could barely stand up. I wanted to go to the graveside service but Gil made me promise to go home so I did. I collapsed on the couch and when I woke up a few hours later, I couldn't swallow at all. I went to the ER and they said it was an aggressive strep.


Eventually, it progressed to Scarlet Fever. That was a really dark time in my life. I had just left a long-term relationship and the break-up was explosive. Dealing with that while being so terribly sick was beyond weird. Lucikly, I had a few sweet people who would come by to feed me and help me shower. A magazine editor I wrote for lived a few blocks from my new apartment and he took it upon himself to see to my recovery in a totally platonic way.

It's amazing how some people you are friendly with but not close to can step up to the plate and assume all kinds of responsibilities when you have nobody else nearby. This fellow, Mike, he took care of me like a big brother for close to a year. He even re-introduced me to the man who would become my husband. Mike was my regular Friday night date nd he'd always take me to this club that he and some other film enthusiasts would rent to show classic cult horror & Sci Fi films. He'd get me to rubn the projector, take tickets, sell brownies, whatever. The week my fture husband came by was a special Coffin Joe Weekend with Coffin joe himself visiting from brazil.

Enough about that.

Strep Throats can lead to terrible things as evidence in this thread. I will be praying for Kendall's complete recovery.

Actually kat, Bill D. had The Spud last. I had annamil present it to Big Mick at a Getaway and he left it behind instead of in it. Anyway, Bill took it home and offered to send it to Mick but Mick declined saying he'd pick it up himself "sometime." Last I heard it had shriveled up and sent out long tentacle like roots but it was too late. Lacking proper soil and water "The Original Spud" passed into garbage history.

The actual use of The Original Spud was as stuffer for Mick to enhance the codpiece of his thong. Sadly he put it in the back which did no good and frankly made it look as though he had crapped himself.

I do have a thought though.....................Why not supply Kendall with a complete set? Two for the back, one for the front, and he'll be stylin' and profilin'......with the emphasis on profile. They would certainly make a nice, uh, stocking stuffer for Christmas.

Kendall: Seems you are going to be okay and that's good news indeed. Drink a couple of glasses of red wine a day and it will surely help your condition. It's certainly helped mine. I have about 80% blockage of an artery coming out of my heart and it has been so since 1993. As with you, evidently a voluntary by-pass has occurred and that's a blessing.

I picked up Seamus last night and entertained him with the kitties. We slept in and went to the frigid beach for an hour. Afterwards I delivered him back to Kendall in preparation for tomorrow's storm. The Captain went off to the grocery store on his own just to get out of the house for a little while. A good sign.
Batten down the hatches all. tomorrow will be cold, wet, and generally crappy.

As to the throat, the antibiotics build up to a certain concentration in the blood, which remains level if you take the antibiotics on schedule. They take a while to kill the bacteria, so they may not be finished working. Lots of other possibilities, but ask the doc.

Kendall, there IS a horizon. The world is always turning toward the morning, and all that. You just can't SEE the horizon. I can't see the horizon, but I have faith that it's out there somewhere, I BELIEVE there IS a horizon, and... I JUST SAW IT - I SAW THE HORIZON!!! OK, it's gone again.

That is not unusual with strep. It hangs on and iften requires multiple regimens of drugs to eliminate it. I had it six years ago. It took five weeks and three different drugs to clean it out.
Meantime - ACIDOPHILUS!!!! or you will have more problems next week.

Ok folks, here is an update.
My regular doctor says I'm in good shape, no worries about the Strepp throat, and, I'm not to do any shovelling or any other strenuous actvity.He wants me to call him on Friday just to check in.

speaking of ignorant Doctors - my heart specialist went on a treat (self-prescribing) when I told him I was taking magnesium. He wouldn't listen when I said a friend was told to take it by an equally eminent heart specialist in another major teaching hospital. Nor did he want to talk to this colleague, or read the literature on he subject.

Naturally I still take magnesium, which is effective for muscular problems (hearts are muscles, too)

Speaking of herbs and home remedies and such, I caught a cold in the hospital while I was on my recent vacation. Don't know if I or anyone else ever mentioned this on any other threads, so... Ya know that there Nasal Mist stuff what ya sprays up yer nose ta open er up? Well, screw that stuff. After ya gargle with warm salt water, use a teaspoon and suck it up yer nose. I find two teaspoons up each blowhole works best. And, ya can do it more than twice in 24h, unlike that Nasal Crap they sell in the shops.

"But, my noseholes are slammed shut tighter 'n Aunt Sally's coffin." you say? Take a straw and stick it in the salt water. Cap the end with yer finger and tilt yer head back. Let 'er go and then cap yer blowhole with yer finger and shove 'er in while ya snuff. Once they open up, ya can go back to the teaspoon. No need fer them fancy and expensive "doppers" what they sell in the shops.

And thanks for digging my house out so I could get an oil delivery - $600+. Turned down the thermostat to 62 and there it will stay 'til hell freezes over which may be next week.
BUT!!!! I got a huge surprise of a BONUS from my job - a full week's pay. So I can afford the oil and still have a few holiday goodies.

Deborah, Dad and I were just talking the other day about how when I was a kid (and probably him, too) we almost always had snow for Halloween...and the time in April when we got over 2 feet in one storm (I remember having a couple of snow days off from school, mostly).

Far to the East of my office there is a wide plain that ends ramping up into a chain of mountains called the Cuyamacas, the tallest of which being, appropriately, Mount Cuyamaca. From out on the lawn you can look out and see it profiled against the distant Eastern sky, sticking up into the blue. And recently, it changed from brown to white, for reasons no-one could explain.

Perhaps this is the "snow" you are speaking of?

Trubrit... April '82 was a good one. Other than when I was a lad and used snow shoes a couple of times to get to the living room window to shovel so we could see more than a crack of sky, the worst one I remember was in February around '82. Can't recall the exact year. But, I remember saying to my fellow employees at about noon, "You guys can stay here if you want. I am going home." I added something about idiots under my breath. 1.62m in less than 24h.

Kendall... how ya feelin, buddy? Besides not grumpy? I have been housebound a week tomorrow. I am not the least bit grumpy either. Why do people say things like that? I mean, what the frig is their friggin problem, EH?

On a more serious note, today I was finally able to get over my concern about working in the garage alone. My Doctor told me it was ok as long as I don't do anything strenuous and carry a cell phone everywhere I go.He was probably trying to ease my concern, but it sure as hell didn't translate that way!

As for Kendall - I just sent him home with his tummy full of lobster and chocolates and a warm glow in his heart. Tami and Jason soon followed. We all miss Jacqui but lobster and steak and a healthy dose of wine and champagne took some of the sting out of it.
Seamus is spending the night and looking forward to a romp on the beach with Bandit and Joey in the AM. It was like an ever flowing sea of yellow dogs tonight. They got to share in the feast too. Very partial to Jason's Macaroni Salad.
